Chelsea reach agreement to sign Cesc Fábregas

If we had CL football at the expense of Arsenal (which would've been a plausible situation given that they were 4th) then maybe there may have been a glimmer of hope. But if he's to leave Barcelona for the Premier League, I expect that return to Arsenal to happen.

Not something that bothers me much, he has a genuine connection with Wenger and Arsenal and we really can't be expecting the big names to actually happen - I know I don't expect much!

If and a huge if arsene buys fabregas, i dont think he will buy a top class striker and you will be left with the wrong yaya and a pokemon upfront. Arsenal will need a new right back too may be even a central defender. I think they may buy big, but it will be in the striker department. Arsene also loves bender and will go for him as they need a defensive player there as wilshire isnt good enough defensively.

If we get Cesc will have 3 proper CMs who can do the lot. Run, tackle, pass, score. We don't want to be like Spurs or Chelsea with a slew of DMs, who can't provide any creativity.

This is his opportunity to shine like with the Mata deal. The ironic thing is we were one summer too early. Pity Barcelona were playing hardball last year.

Woody is a visionary, he was ahead of his time and now the rest of the footballing world are catching up to him.

You'd be ridiculously shite defensively.

With absolutely no width as well, would get blown away on counter attacks.

You have one and you'd still have only one.

Why change a habit of a lifetime?

For now, when we finally put pen to paper with our new deal it'll blow yours out the water.. but because one bad season on the pitch that shows how far behind everyone we are right?

Ok, fair enough I won't aware of a new United deal. I've already stated that Man Utd are a massive club who I still believe have a big pulling power in terms of attracting players but the fact of the matter is you are in your worse position for a good while.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if you turned it around and were back to competing for honours next season however remember when Liverpool went so close to winning the league in 2009 and then were out of the Champions League for the following 5 seasons? This Premier League is a very difficult league and if you fall behind it can take a while to get back where you want to be. For what its worth I reckon you'll recover pretty quickly under LVG but still think that your player recruitment could be difficult!

If i recall, Fergie said something similar recently when he was asked about not having replaced Keane. Something to the effect of he doesn't look for DMs, just complete midfielders. The DM concept seems largely propagated by fans who like to think midfielders have compartmentalized roles.

Yeah it would be better for us to have a footballing midfielder who has good positional sense, can tackle, and read the game rather than a pure defensive midfielder who specialises in defending and does little else.

Let's not pretend here - if we signed Cesc, we'd still need another more defensively minded player.
You'd have the world's most balanced midfield according to your fellow Gooner.

No, we wouldn't - those 3 provide plenty defensive cover (do you think any of them are less defensively equipped than a 31-year-old Arteta?)

No I don't but then I think upgrading on Arteta is massively important.

I imagine you're talking about us doing a kind of Cesc-Ramsey behind Ozil-Wilshere, behind Walcott and one extra.

Looks like we do have a buy back clause.

If we want him then that really is the end of the matter, he would be an Arsenal player next season.

The problem is that the past is another country.

It's last season that counts these days and the competitions you're playing in next season.

You will be playing in the same competition that you have been participating in during the last 9 years. Yet have only 1 trophy to show for. How does that fill anyone with confidence about your chances this coming season?

Because nothing has changed in 9 years, has it?

He's just always been more suited to the style of Premier League football. He did have some real good times at Barcelona, but fundamentally his tenure was always undermined by the fact that the fans always wanted him as something he was never going to be - which was Xavi's heir.

What worry me with the formation proposed is not the defensive midfielder, but how are you gonna defend against a team with width and strong wingers.
With those players you won't last more than 60mn.

I imagine that in defensive mode:

Walcott - Ramsey - Wilshere - Fabregas

---------------Ozil

------------Benzema

But i won't trust that setup.

Yes. I don't like it. It's clearly got its flaws. We wouldn't sign Cesc back if he wasn't going to be touted around elsewhere.

Dont think unite or arsenal will buy him. I wont be surprised if brendan forgets lallana and tries to do a deal for cesc. Every one in the current top 4 is stocked with players in his position. With us, LVG wont want him, he already has too many behind the striker players. He doesnt really fit anywhere, but he wont be a bad player for anyone. Strange situation with him.

My prediction for arsenals summer.

Remy 14m - would be worth a lot to QPR to keep him also a good goal scoring record will drive up his price.
Schnedeirlin 18-21m - valued less than lallana but is their key cm. payed 12 for wanyama and Schnedeirlin has looked better.
Aurier - looks like he is favourite to replace sagna. Knowing arsenal are in need of replacing sagna I would imagine 12m- although I wouldn't put it past wenger to buy someone like angel Rangel for a few million and replace jenkinson.

On top of this arsenal will probaly spend 8-10 million on some average centre back. A similar price on some average wide player to come in when there are injuries and about 12 million on a couple of youngsters.

That's about 70 million and in your first 11 the only position you'll improve is cm by having slightly more defensive midfielder in the first 11. Even then he's not good enough for a title winning team.

He isnt even mentioned in barca players off to world cup for spain. Is he not going? or was he left out ?

football has changed since then, the competition wasn't what it is now, we could afford to play these two in a midfield 4. I don't think you'd get away with it now like you can't with a 4-4-2
We're not playing 442 we're playing with 3 proper CMs.

Don't really know. Whatever the issue is, it didn't exist at Arsenal.
I think it is more to do with spain and barcelona having xavi and iniesta and busquets. As good a player as fabregas is (and I really rate him highly) he either isn't good enough or isnt able to adapt well enough for arguably the best club side and national team ever. If spain and Barcelona had him as their main midfielder over any of those three they would not have been anywhere near as successful imo. After how successful Barcelona and spain have been it is unfair to say he has been misused, its not like Aragones, guardiola, del bosque don't know what they are doing. If they all choose xavi, iniesta, busquets and also Alonso when it comes to spain then it must be the correct decision justified by them winning.

I like my shopping list better.
