Chelsea reach agreement to sign Cesc Fábregas

We do, but that was the past. The main reason for that is gone. What gives us any more chance of winning trophies than Arsenal in the future?
Van Gaal's a good manager, but he's not Sir Alex. He's one of a number of good managers in the league.

I don't see why Fabregas would fancy his chances of winning trophies here any more than anywhere else. Though I could while Sir Alex was here.
Maybe Van Gaal would sell his vision to him. But the idea that he'd automatically see us as a better option isn't the case, in my opinion.

Of course there are no future guarantees.

I'm just one of those people who thinks there's more quality and potential in the squad than advertised. The underrating that goes on when it comes to some of our players is pathetic.

That said, we do need three or four choice additions.

I fully expect United to have a season next time similar to Liverpool this time - we'll have no CL distractions and it's going to allow us to properly prepare for each game.

People are seriously overestimating our pull.

Agreed. Arsenal can obviously offer Champions League football, and the adoration that Cesc was accustomed to before he left for Barca. There's also very little indication that Van Gaal even wants him, in fact quite the opposite.

If he's up for £30 million then we really should go for him. He would instantly be one of the best CMs in the league, there's no reason why we can't sign him and another quality midfielder.

As much as I dislike Arsenal I must ask, what.. we have a better keeper than them and a much better attack (center forwards) that's about it. There midfield is so much better than ours is embarrassing and we can't even begin to compare defenses seeing as we don't we have one yet with two of our better ones leaving.
They're as weak in defence as we are but at least we have Jones and Smalling who are promising with Shaw hopefully and Evans as the leader of the defence.

I absolutely love this thread, its always full of united and arsenal fans tearing into eachother . Before the argument would have been very one sided but a season of moyes seems to have given arsenal fans hope and has made things more even for now.

It'd be funny if Arsenal spunk £30m on Fabregas and leave Giroud as the only striker again. As much of a cult figure as Sanogo seems to be, it's inescapable that he's shite.

God help us.

But really? Arsenal have a very settled back four.. I'd take both of their central defenders over ours right now and there is also no guarantee we'll sign Luke Shaw. Compare their record last season to ours, they have a better defense.

So, will Arsenal break their wage structure for Cesc? If not we can offer much more money. Cesc could conceivably be on 200-250k if he came to United....

He'll join the Brendan Rodgers project. Mark my words.

I don't want him. I really want Arsenal to blow their budget on him and for them to end up signing someone like Remy instead of a top class striker. Fabregas is a great player, but this is one of the dumbest signings that Arsenal could make. Why stall Wilshere's and Ramsey's development?

Sagna's leaving and Gibbs doesn't stay fit.

I'm happy if they keep the CBs they currently have. Hugely overrated.

In fairness, Remy's got a solid one in two record since coming to England.

What we did was a one off. It isn't something that will be repeated for a while.

I forgot about Sagna, even still we have Rafael so it's not really a huge difference. Also I don't think they are, some on here massively overrate Jonny Evans who isn't half as good as Laurent Kos (not even attempting to spell he's name)

Sorry, but I don't think it's beyond the realms of reality for United to challenge next season. Without distractions, we could spring the same surprise. There's more quality in our squad than we're given credit for, though we do need to add three or four faces.

I'd say Evans' only problem is his rubbish fitness record. There's not a better centre half in the league when it comes to playing out from the back.

It's funny how people talk about Evans, Jones and Smalling as inexperienced and not up to it - they're all title winners!

A striker obviously has to be their priority, but I doubt £30m on Cesc would be prohibitive (c. £120m in cash in the bank in their last set of accounts iirc).

I find it amazing that for the first time in premier league history, united fall out of the top 3 thanks to Moyes and opposition fans believe we've fallen off the wagon for good

I feel this is a subject for a different thread but yes they are all title winners but that's because they had Rio/Nemanja alongside them at some stage.. you wouldn't put any title win down to the brilliance of any of them.

What's funny KM? Care to give me another example of a team doing it in the last 10 years?

Dortmund went from 5th to 1st in one season.

They were the first team I looked.

One-off my arse.

Fact of the matter is that Arsenal are a very attractive proposition for most players this Summer. Firstly the money we have got coming in from Puma ( and by the way Puma is who Fabregas is sponsored by), secondly there's the feel good factor around the club having just won our first trophy in nine years and thirdly the fact that Wenger ( one of the most respected managers in world football amongst players regardless if you think he's the best man for the job).

Don't get me wrong United are still a massive club in terms of revenue and status but the fact of the matter is you won't be playing Champions League football next season and your club is going through a major transitional process and are in a location which is not exacly desired by footballers or their wives ( with all do respect). I think if you were to ask most top players who they would rather join for next season Arsenal or United their would be a pretty even split with Arsenal just edging it.

As for Fabregas himself I have no doubt that he grew to to love Arsenal but for me he's a Barcelona boy and always has been. I think the only thing he wants to do is become a success at Barca but if they are allowing his sell then there's little he can do.

I think he'll return to Arsenal, in the same way he returned to Barcelona. He always said he enjoyed his time here and I think the main reason he left was because he wanted to go back to Barcelona. We will soon tho and do agree that the lure of City could be tempting.

Cash in the bank never translates to transfer budget.

Arsenal will spend circa £40-£50m this summer.

I'd think they'd need more of a defensive midfielders than a Fabregas type of player. They've got plenty of players who can do the creative work, in my opinion.

Why haven't we bought him yet?

And as to people saying "we don't need him", I have only five words for you.

Anderson.
Tom Cleverley.
Marouanne Fellaini.

Now tell me we don't "need" Cesc Fabregas.

No, you're right. But they've all still contributed well.

You've hit the nail on its head - we need a big hitting CB. All reports suggest we'll get one this summer, so all good.

But our existing trio are all considerably better than they're being credited with at the moment.
