I don't really understand why we'd want him. I mean he has not played a deep CM role for some years now. And in advanced AM position we already have Mata.

Doesn't mean he can't play there. How long has it been since he moved? Three?

It does. Why do you think he started to play much further up front. And yes, there is a big difference between "can play" and "plays". Phil Jones can play in CM role, he did have good matches there, like against Bayer L.
I don't think we need a player that can play in a CM role, we need a proper CM. The player that played in that position regularly and with some success.

Jesus, this argument just goes round and round and round. Before having it, why don't you read through the last ten pages of this thread and you'll see every point that anyone could possibly make on either side of the debate.

He doesn't play further up for Barca because he can't play in CM. Its because Xavi plays there. Do you honestly expect him to start over when Xavi was in his prime? Did Veron start over Scholes for us in CM? He played as a false 9 for Spain and Barca decided to do something similar and played him further up. Barca didn't need him in the first place, especially with Thiago coming through as well. He was a terrific CM for Arsenal. And its stupid to compare the Jones situation to Cesc. Jones barely plays or played in CM. Cesc did it for 6-7 years. That is a huge difference.

Can I ask how Jamie Jackson will know all this info? Does he have credible sources at United?

I actually thought we'd have a shot at Kroos and Fabregas. I thought Kroos would be easier since he's in his last year of his contract and i'm sure it was an option to join us. Fabregas I thought we could also get due to the fans not backing him but with the new manager like we will find out he will have certain players that are part of his plans, I.e Young, Valencia and Kagawa, whereas Enrique would prefer to have Cesc rather than not have Cesc as he's a great option.

Not sure Luis Enrique would prefer that, as long as he got a proper replacement. I'm sure Rafinha will be given a lot of chances next season which will be in their thoughts when they're considering Cesc's future - I don't think he's ready to be first choice but I don't think Cesc is either so it's still possible.

In his last seasons for Arsenal he also played much further up the pitch, basically behind the striker. Why is that? Because Arsenal got Song? Yes he did play at CM, but he started to play as a AM well before Barcelona. And there is no telling whether he can transition back to play a proper CM. I think he is best used as a number 10/AM.

Found it on facebook so don't get your hopes up.

Barcelona have confirmed that they have received bids from 3 EPL clubs for Fabregas [Sky Sports]

No because Adebayor decided to go to Manchester City for big money, and Arsenal didn't have anyone else to fill in behind the striker after Wenger moved Van Persie to number 9.

Cesc Fabregas is one of the best centre midfield players the Premier League has ever seen. Any team that gets him will be blessed. If its us I'll be over the moon.

Well, i personally would rather have Kroos or Gundogan i mean if he is over his injuries problems obviously. I am not sure "one of the best" players in a certain role will play in a different position as much time as Cesc had.

Paul Scholes...

So, Cesc is happening either. Who to next? the Vidal thread?

Just pick the name of a CM in world football out of the hat. That seems to be how we're running our transfer policy these days so might as well join in.

The star saying Cesc is back to the top of our wanted list.
The Star have never once in their history predicted a correct football rumour....Instead they just randomly make up ridiculous stories and very few fans every pay much attention to their made up stupid stories

I'm not totally sure who this Jamie Jackson is exactly as I don't have twitter but from what I've read on here he just seems hell bent on wumming about United. I think anything that he says can just be treated as toot.

He put Caf favourites such as Ogden in their place with the Kroos news. They all thought we'd signed him!
The only people who said we signed him was express and daily mail and mirror, Ogden is definitely better then Jackson, doesn't mean he gets it all right but just because we were after someone and we don't get them, doesn't mean that the journalist was wrong or whatever. On Kroos nobody reliable ever said we were close... We may have been confident or whatever, but that doesn't mean bayern were ready to get rid.

Balague is most likely going to be the most accurate source for the fabregas story. He isn't particularly liked in England but he gets a lot of stories right and he understands football well. He also has a lot of sources in the Spanish team.

Aye. My mate is a football writer and writes stories for all the papers. I once asked him about a story involving a united player he had in the star and he just said yeah it's complete bollocks, the star are completely fine with me making up rumours to fill column inches.

Imagine to get paid for that  And yet they wonder why football journalists are disliked!

in case I have missed it. Who is priority then?
Maybe the current batch of speculated players (Shaw, Kroos and Fabregas) were Moyes' priority targets.

LVG has now come in with his own list of targets (reportedly Strootman, Clasie and Carvalho) hence the ones above are no longer priority?

Clasie and Carvalho? Carvalho was very much a Moyes target. Besides, we have no real inkling as to who his targets really are. Strootman and Robben are probably the most likely, but even then he apparently gave confirmation for us to target some of Moyes' players. We cannot be sure yet.

Arsene Wenger is more concerned with recruiting a striker and anchor man - but could bid for former player if another Premier League club pursue him

Arsenal will not prioritise the signing this summer of Cesc Fabregas above recruiting a new striker and holding midfielder but will seriously consider activating their buy-back clause should a Premier League rival bid for their former captain.

As part of the deal that took Fabregas to Barcelona in 2011, Arsenal negotiated first refusal at a fee of around £25million should other clubs make an offer. At the time, it was simply felt that Fabregas would end his career at Barcelona but, with the club having committed huge resources to buying Neymar and renewing Lionel Messi’s contract, they need to recoup money to make major signings. Fabregas, 27, is among their more saleable assets, with Barcleona able to buy and sell players this summer after Fifa suspended its transfer ban on the club.

It gives new coach Luís Enrique the chance to refresh his newly-inherited squad.

Arsenal are well aware of Fabregas’ potential availability, with Manchester City and Manchester United also closely monitoring the situation. Fabregas would qualify as a homegrown player in any Premier League squad because of the time he spent with Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger’s priorities this summer, however, are a new striker and a holding midfielder. The club have also been scouting several right-backs after Bacary Sagna turned down a series of contract offers. Arsenal tried to sign Atletico Madrid’s Juanfran last summer and have been watching Toulouse’s Serge Aurier, Schalke full-back Atsuto Uchida and Southampton’s Calum Chambers.

Poor Cesc. No one is making him a priority.

It'll hurt the team shape alot. Much like us with Rooney, Mata and van Persie, Wenger will have to accomodate Ramsey, Cesc, and Ozil as best as he can.

Well he is not exactly on the market.

I think the point he was making was when Sir Alex signed Veron Scholes was pushed forward into the number 10 position, and stayed there until his eye injury. It was only after his return in 2006 that he went back to playing in centre midfield, and the time he'd spent playing off Ruud made no visible difference to his ability to dictate the game from the number 8 position.

You asked had any player been able to recover their midfield ability after a long stint as a number 10 and he provided the example of Scholes. A fine example if I may say so myself.

Ha you beat me to it, however you put it so well, there is no reason for me to bother responding :)

Like feck Arsenal won't be interested. He'd instantly be their best player. They'd be daft to turn down the opportunity to strengthen like that.

Of course but it will create a selection quandary though. How do they play Ramsey, Wilshere, Ozil and Cesc together?

Well none of them have a spotless injury record so it probably won't come up that often. But you'd play Ozil from out wide, tucking in and drop the worst one, which is Wilshere right now. Doesn't look complicated to me.
