Would I be right in thinking that the BT Sport 4k channel will be exclusive to BT TV and not available on Sky?

I think so. I heard on the commentary that today's game would be in 4K on channel 434 but that channel does not exist on Sky.

You need BT's 4K youview box to get it, not sure Sky actually have a 4K box out yet.

Was just reading about this and youcare correct. You need a UHD box for it as current boxes probably can't process it. That being said I'm going to fire up my Dreambox and see if I can access the UHD channel.

Just checking the BT TV forums at HT to see peoples impressions of 4K, who knows if its true but they reckon BT have downgraded their HD channels in order to make UHD look better which itself isn't even running at 4K.

I did notice the HD didn't look that good whilst watching, but with the Wembley shadow its hard to tell half the time.

The high-definition on my BT Sport through Virgin Media looks noticeabley poorer than last season.

Anyone else's seem the same?

Edit: just seen the post above. Shocking if true... I'll be giving them a ring if the quality is the same next Saturday.

I can't find the frequency of the UHD channel as I wanted to add it to the dreambox. I think its just one of the normal previous channels which transmits in UHD or maybe not.

I'm watching in SD to get used to it as knocked HD on head for both BT and Sky. Not much difference tbh.

You must need your eyes testing.

I'm at the in-laws watching and their subscription was fecked, they'd been paying for HD but it wasn't active, I called and sorted it at HT but watching SD in the first half was genuinely awful.

I've always said the SD was intentionally made worse to make people upgrade, so it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Watching that first half in SD I kept saying there's no way that's normal TV quality, it looked like a flash stream.

Had to get the price down somehow, that was why both lots of HD went. When my contract with Sky is up I will move my phone/broadband as well. I have knocked my Sky package down to the basic package. The subscription was getting out of hand. The Smart TV I have has a very good picture quality.

I'm going to switch between HD and SD periodically to see if there is much of a change because so far the channel is transmitting at 1920 x 1080 so no seemingly lowered quality.

When your contract is up just cancel it, they'll contact you within a few days offering you a massive discount to come back.

We did it for the in-laws, cancelled and within 3 days they were offered 60% off.

As it happens we'd got them the same deal we're on so they didn't need it, but it works.

If they're lowering the quality, it won't be resolution, more than likely it'll be the bitrate that's changed.

Yep, that worked for me last year. Same with mobile phones, threatening to leave always gets you a better deal.

Thanks. I'll do that.

Just checking the bitrate and on digitalbitrate.com and Both SS1HD and BT2HD have a bitrate between 10-17 Mb/s. SD Channels average transmitting between 3-4Mb/s

I couldn't find the frequency of the UHD channel so I could check that.

I'd appreciate if someone with a BT Box can tell me the frequency of the UHD channel so I can add it to the dreambox for testing.

The problem I have with my HD on BT, is there's a time delay between the HD & SD channels. Very annoying because the HD channel is the one that has 2/3 second delay on it. Anyone else have that problem?

I'm sure it's like that for all HD channels. They're always lagging behind their SD counterparts.

In what way can it annoy you? Unless you watch both SD and HD channels side by side at once so you can always tell the difference..

Because I pay top dollar for this overrated heap of shit they force upon us, like many others do. I can tell the difference when I flick back between the two channels, especially when you hear the interviewer say the same thing twice. I actually want to watch 'live' coverage thats not delayed but in HD, I'ts like paying for some shit computer stream lag where people complain it's behind, and that shouldn't be the case.

Why would you switch the channels anyway?

2-3 seconds........come on, like that matters.

Isn't the problem with SD looking terrible due to the fact it's no longer incredibly back-lit CRT death-ray modules in the modern televisions which by and large were meant for different resolutions/bitrates/whatever the feck else?

@Rado_N

To be fair, I watch in HD and can sometimes hear the bloke next door celebrating a goal before it happens on my screen. The Freeview watching peasant.

Which is a valid annoyance. He think's 2-3 seconds delay somehow doesn't make it "live".

The SD-HD discrepancy is not some conspiracy, it's simply because of the size of the set and the amount of pixels each definition can project. The further up we go on the chain, the more pixels there are on the screen, and the bigger the set, the more pixels it will show. SD pictures will always look grainy on a HD set simply because of the size.
The reason why SD pictures were acceptable or were perceived to be better pre-HD are because SD sets usually maxed out at 32 inches. The HD sets start out at 42, while 4K looks to be starting at 48. Even now, you watch something in HD on a set bigger than 55 inches and you'll see a lot more grainy picture than you would on a 50 inch, for example... As the price of 4K begins to settle down, we should see 65+ inch sets becoming the norm, like how 40+ inch sets became the norm post-SD...

Dude the reality is even the SD version is probably a few seconds behind real time as it is. A couple more seconds wont hurt, especially when it's incredibly clearer than SD and a pleasure to watch. How good must your life be that this annoys you! :wenger:

dont think you'd be able to watch it without a 4k sat rec. Also its not on satelite -yet

I wanted to add it and see because if its not in UHD it shouldn't display on a HD box. If it does then they're bullshitting. Hope they add it to satellite soon.

even if its UHD it can display on the box. You just have to go to dreamboxedit and change the type from data to Tv. I did that with the UHD demo test.Got black screen which i then recorded on my hard drive and encoded with handbrake
