Free-to-air matches
BT will make some matches available for everyone to watch, whether a subscriber or not, via a new, free-to-air channel on digital TV.

Called BT Sport Showcase, this channel will show a minimum of 12 UEFA Champions League matches and 14 UEFA Europa League matches and these will be available to anyone to watch for free. Each participating British team will be shown at least once.

12 CL matches free-to-air - sounds like less than we have been getting for free via ITV over the years who I think have always shown 1 match for free every Tuesday of a CL gameweek

True, but to be fair they dont have to show any free-to-air matches, so I still say hats off to them.

you sure about that? I was under the impression that it was some kind of rule that a certain number of matches must be shown for free

Oh, well in that case I am not 'sure' - I just assumed they wouldnt have any sort of obligation like that. I dont see why they would do though - its a commercial deal like anything else, I cant see who exactly (other than the fans) would be insisting on getting free TV coverage for some games.

FFS I thought we'd at least have peace for a year or two whilst Gerrard was out in the US before he inevitably moved into punditry

UEFA sells the broadcast rights in a three season basis and various packages are available for bidders, with UEFA weighing balance between free and pay television under the UEFA and European Union (EU) agreement.

Many sporting events are 'protected' and must be shown free-to-air in the UK (the world cup, the fa cup final etc) - unfortunately over the years the list of 'protected' events has been cut as sporting bodies inevitably give in to the lure of big TV money: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ofcom_Code_on_Sports_and_Other_Listed_and_Designated_Events

UEFA do force rights holders in all countries to show some matches for free - that is why Sky/ITV had a combined deal for many years. In fact when BT first got the CL rights it was assumed they would do a deal with ITV but obviously that hasnt happened so they have to make this new free channel.

I wonder how many people will sign up for a cheap BT internet package to get all the games without ever intending to use their internet service?

For the people who have been watching BT Sport this season, what's the streaming been like? Sky Go has been seemed pretty solid this past year after a really rough start.

I just renewed my BT Sport contract. Does that mean I have to pay more to get this channel?

I think it depends on how you access the service, if you get it via BT TV then its likely still free. If you access it via Sky or you are just a BT Broadband customer it's £5 a month.

My dad got bt broadband, i just use his username and password on my laptop and hdmi it to my tv. No big deal.

I found BT Sport streaming service to be pretty hit and miss - definitely less reliable than Sky Go which I also use. Perhaps it will improve in time but on a couple of occasions I actually resorted to using a non-kosher stream even though I had paid for a legit one!

That's too polite - it's fecking garbage.

I renewed my BT broadband in April, after being persuaded with free BT Sport, with the assurance that there was "no plan in place to charge BT broadband customers" any extra for the channels. 2 months later, BT Broadband customers have to pay extra for it. It's only a fiver, but still, a bit of a con.

I think I might bin the lot, Sky Sports included. I watch most sports on my laptop, as my TV isn't great, and any sign of wind and rain makes my Sky signal fall to pieces. Sky Go and BT Sport's streaming platforms are very unreliable, even with my superfast Broadband. I tend to revert to illegal streams for most United matches, even though I am a paying customer of legitimate streams, because they are so poor.

That's roughly what I've heard. Not had Sky TV for ages, and don't want it either, so streaming is the only real option. Hopefully they'll be beefing up their service before the new season. Can imagine lots of complaints if it's not solid, especially since they'll be charging people for the privilege.

I used it for the last 2 months of the season. Not once had any issue?

I made an official complaint about it, BT then told me that is was probably an issue with my ISP - which of course is BT :wenger:
It's a joke, every time I tried to use it I had problems, either with it buffering constantly or sound being out of sync or it flat out refusing to even load the page.

Yet Netflix can stream in full 4K with absolutely no issues so I know it's not my connection.

Sky Go, on the other hand, is brilliant.

Been using BT Sport on TV for a while now and apart from a shocking pundit selection and a seeming Liverpool bias in the TV fixtures they were pretty good. Never missed a game. You have to pay extra for HD which is a bit of a con, but all in all pretty good.

It won't be free, all they will do is charge extra for 4K. HD will become the new SD.

I could honestly see them still charging extra for HD. UHD isn't as big of a step up for most people, and a lot of people won't even notice the difference between UHD and HD (woe betide them). I don't think the uptake will be as great, hence the still charging a premium for HD. I'd see UHD as a 'super' premium.

Minimum of 12. Didn't ITV show just a handful more? 2 play off round matches, 6 group stage matches and 7 knockout stage (Ro16/QF/SF/F) matches?

Gerrard, McManaman, Owen and Ian Wright............

What is it with scousers infesting the media?!?!?! Also, Ian Wright has the insight of a giraffe, why is he there?

Not sure TBH - I thought there was more than just 6 group games.

It was definitely just the 6, although having thought about it, in recent years they split the round of 16 into 4 weeks so it would have been 17 games on ITV as opposed to a minimum of 12 on BT.

If you believed them when they said prices wouldn't go up then I see how you obtained the tagline. Prices were always gunna go up.

Just changed to BT broadband so got this free :D.

As in free for now but then will go up to a fiver next season as per the article? Or have you negotiated it for free next season?

I knew it would eventually not be free for BT Broadband customers, as there's no way it could remain free with the new TV deal. To be told only in April that there was no plan to charge current BT customers for BT Sport at present was just a flat out lie though.

Although, I've not had any correspondence from them telling me when I have to start paying for it.

As I say though. Not overly bothered. I was considering binning sports packages on TV due to pretty unreliable streaming services, which is how I watch Sky/BT most of the time.

Sky's CL coverage was outstanding, so BT have a lot to live up to

But I've generally been impressed with their PL coverage, also I get their HD channels to I'm ok with this

Delighted itv no longer have any rights. They were awful
