Breel Embolo | Signed for Schalke

Supposedly Leipzig's chairmen has said they are no longer interested.

Shalke are linked and they could be a good move for him as they'll probably fit him straight into Sane's spot.

Apologies to Switzerland, and Breel. I was too easy to dismiss them with dodgy data. Using better data, taking the top 510 players in Europe (by performance), some countries do well (Croatia and Slovenia). Other countries are poor (Poland). Switzerland is so, so. Population ~ 8.08 m / 3 top footballers. Breel is one of them.

2nd col : number of footballers of that nationality in top 510
3rd col : country's population in millions.
4th : 2nd col divided by 3rd - so showing relative strength.

Only countries with 2 or more footballers are shown. So, for example, Armenia with only 1 is excluded.

He did seem a bit lightweight against France. If we still had LvG in charge, I would be dead against this but if the price is reasonable, I'd be willing to take a punt on him and see him develop under some proper tutelage. He's one of those that is either going to be another Martial or Depay...spectacular hit or flop.

Get a feeling that "if" we are interested in Embolo, Mourino will use him in the Willian role. Strong, fast, hard working right winger to keep the width and play like a more traditional winger. Imo he could fulfil that role quite well

Is he hard working though? Genuine question, because in the Euros he's looked a lazy fecker who can't even be arsed to get out of offside.

Don't go just by last year's results. Martial and Memphis are both quality.

Thank God. Let him develop at schalke and if good enough move here a few years later.

International games aren't really a good way to judge a player but boy has he been useless. Not even good enough to come of our bench. His decision making has been absolutely poor and similar to that of memphis depay. We don't need another fancy player running around with the ball only to lose it and fall to the ground at the same time.

Yeah, good idea, lets buy him in a few years time when he is 60 million pounds as opposed to buying him at 15 million pounds and if we don't think he's ready yet, loan him out.

Agreed. If we bought him he would probably wind up in a Lukaku type situation where he was loaned out for eventual sale. Let him develop a year or two to see if he has what it takes at a bigger club.

What makes you think he would be a guaranteed success here ?

Good, he looked raw and really poor, i have doubts about his technical ability and tbf he looked a League 1 player, so fair play to him if he goes there and light up the league. I wouldn't mind to be proved wrong, but for now it looks like a sensible decision from our end.

He just has supreme potential and is better that he has been playing in this tournament. 15 million for him is an extremely small risk.

I can pretty much tell you he won't be worth that amount in a few years time. If he was he wouldn't look this bad. Most world class forwards are already fantastic at 19 mentally.

I also don't see anybody bidding for Lukaku. Because he has been quoted 60 million doesn't mean anybody is stupid enough to pay it.

How long have you seen him play? I for one have been really underwhelmed by him. There are some players you just watch and you say they have it, for others there are certain aspects, you can see and relate to why they are so rated, but with him, he just seems to have two things going for him, Pace and Physicality, even then he was schooled physically by defenders, while his passing, holdup play, first touch all seems poor for someone you rate so highly.

He's worth whatever anyone is willing to pay for him. If Troy Deeney is worth 30 million, I'm sure its pretty possible that Embolo in a few years time will be worth 60 million, especially considering inflation.

A few games for Basel in Europe, of which I have been impressed with him. Yes, he's fast and strong and technically he isn't there yet, but he's shown enough to be seen as an emerging talent. Listen, if it was 30 million, I would probably say no, but 15 million in this day in age is nothing for a talent as big as his. And he'll fit into Mourinho's side so smoothly.

No guarantees anyone will be a success but 15 million is worth the gamble I think. Sounds like he's opted to go elsewhere though and we could probably do with a more established right ringer anyway.

Just because you read in the paper that a bid of 30 million was made for troy deeney doesn't make it true. Till he is bought for 30 million he isn't worth 30 million. Nobody is going to buy Lukaku for 60 million. It's all paper talk.

OK, If Any Carroll is worth 35 million...

These might be anomalies, which is why we shouldn't take any risks, and buy him.

Let Shalke have him and we can take Sane, everyone wins, except City of course.

Would we necessarily buy both Ounas and Embolo? I don't know much about either and their exact positions but my impression is they play a similar role, so would we get both? There has been seemingly more speculation about Ounas recently.

Which other games? If he's only ever played in the Swiss league how do you access him against top opposition; against what he'll face in the PL? Look how Memphis fared moving here from Holland and the Dutch league is stronger than the Swiss. I'm not saying we should not go for him. I'm saying even £20m is asking too much on the evidence.

Absolute rubbish. A player as to start somewhere irrespective of what level they play at. The buck teeth player at Barca also played in a Dutch league and where was bloody Leciester team playing last year? How much do you think Kante is worth from a crap league. You buy young players on potential and at times the evidence isn't always there....it's a lottery you'd never win cause you think yout £1 isn't worth the million pound jackpot....

Not worried in the slightest. That is the comfort of having a manager who you trust in the market, as opposed to a plank like the two previous ones.

If he decide not to go for a player, no matter how my inner muppet desires said player, then I simply accept it and move on.

I have the exact same feeling in general with Mourinho in charge. I am completely comfortable with any decision he makes, because of his track-record over many years.

Likewise under Fergie, no matter how sad I was about a loved player's departure ala Van Nistlerooy or Beckham, I was contented by the fact I trusted Fergie, and that ultimately it would be for the greater good of the team. Right now, I am completely content with whoever we sell, or whoever we choose to bring in, as I believe Jose now has complete control over transfers at this club.

Probably the better move for his career. A lot of his international teammates have been able to further their career in the Bundesliga especially Xhaka and Rodriguez.

Didn't want him anyway. That post I made saying I did was just a typo, one big long typo.

Probably best for all concerned, not ready to be a starter for us just yet I feel and he needs playing time to kick on. We may have to revisit for some serious cash in a couple of years.

Ronaldo and Romario originated from Brazil before plying their trade in the well respected dutch league for teams like PSV.

Kante came from the French league and has had to make his way up.

Someone coming from Switzerland and making it at United is nigh on impossible because of the lack of football pedigree in that nation.. its a very small chance you'll find a future world beater in that league. Obviously its not impossible but very small chance. That said whenever I have seen FC Basel.. they usually look decent but based on the footage I have seen of him, watching him live at the euros and based on the league he plays in.. I would very much doubt he has it in him to make it as a starter here right away. Therefore the most we should pay is £10m max.
