Bayern Munich

Just read that another record was equalized: Bayern have scored at least one goal in their last 64 matches, something only Barca's done before.

No records were broken in terms of number of passes made or touches had by a player. However, Mr. Lahm played over 130 passes (can't recall the exact number, maybe 134) with a pretty decent accuracy of 100%.

kind of close, kroos got 158 completed passes, lahm 134. But Lahm had a 100% pass completion percentage.

Mother of God...

Oh Kroos and Lahm's numbers were nothing special. But Robben und Müller both had 42 and 44 passes when they got subbed in minute 54... - and that in forward or very offensive midfield positions...

Just an insane amount of passes...the Europsport commentator was laughing at how Hertha were trying to get possession but couldn't in the first half. Making a mid-table Bundesliga side look like a third-division team. A Bundesliga record, by the way. And that's not even the ridiculous stat:

Guardiola wins a title every 17 matches. How on earth...

Just a comparison amongst other notable coaches: Wenger (96), Ferguson (44), Mourinho (34), Paisley (27)

Didn't Bayern have something like 82% possession the entire game? It's ridiculous how good they are.

Guardiola is an incredible manager. He took a great team and has made them even better, they still play with desire, they have so much creativity and tactical flexibility. It's like he's improving with each passing year - was already a great manager at the beginning of his career but got significantly better since. When he's available in 3-4 years I hope we can get him.

I'm genuinely prepared for the most one sided performance I've seen versus a Manchester United side. It will be worse than the two Barcelona finals.

Everyone is talking about our performance, but what did people make of the Bayern team tonight? Interesting quote from a Bayern fan on Reddit:

I said this since the beginning of the season and nobody believed me.
This Bayern side is much less threatening than last years. Now, don't get me wrong. We are threatening, but did you compare our counterattacks this season to those of last season? When we finally get a chance to counter (which we don't get that often since we are usually in possession), we play it fast until we went up half the pitch, then we return back to playing the possession game.
Also, creating chances from possession alone isn't that easy. We had some crosses this game but nobody to really do something with them until Mandzu came in.

I think alaistair in one of the threads summarised it quite well. Bayern looked overconfident at the start of the match until Welbeck started to worry them. For all their possession, they lacked that penetrative edge until Mandzukic came on.

Like I said in the match thread, counter attacking Bayern > possession based Bayern

They had 2 or 3 bits of quality play including the goal, but for having so much of the ball thats so little.

Without taking anything away from how awesome they are, they are guilty of playing in the opponents half too much and it leaves less space for them to exploit when the opposition sits back. They'd be more effective if they played from deeper and hit on the counter occasionally. Mixed it up a bit. It's what I would call a backup plan though as their suffocating possession game and individual talent is more than good enough 99% of the time.

They were certainly better to watch last year and much more devastating in attack. He's Barca-ized them since he went there. Could have put a glass eye to sleep tonight with their needless passing for passing's sake.

They are just like Barca in defence, their CB's are a disaster waiting to happen if you've got pace to get them running back to their own goal.

Another thing is, usually when Bayern/Barcelona go to another big team's home stadium and completely dominate them, completely own the ball its something to admire and praise.

Well sorry Bayern, we've had to put up with that in a lot of matches this season especially most of the matches against the big teams in the league. Dominating the ball against us isn't special anymore. What do you really have? Yeah it was a fantastic goal, so was ours.

Their solution to this is to cynically foul the player. Happened a lot this season.

i don't think today was a good example of what bayern have to offer, it seemed like a pretty obviously subpar performance compared to what they've produced this season. can't hold one game to a season or a standard when nothing has been settled yet, remember that pep's barca lost to arsenal and drew to them.

If they do beat us and go through, I reckon a fast counterattacking side like Real Madrid can beat them.

Based on how Welbeck's running scared the life out of their CB's, Ronaldo and Bale should wipe the floor with them if Bayern defend like that.

They were like Barca without Messi under Pep today, just pass, pass, pass with nobody making the run in behind to make something happen. They're a lot better then what they showed, and a good bit of that was due to the way we set out IMO. You still need a lot of luck and a great defensive performance to get away with anything against them though.

On another note, almost forgot until today how fecking annoying Ribery is. In 2010 it was the same, every little tiny foul surround the referee, question "how dare they foul me", ask for a card always, push the guy around even though Valencia just went to block a pass normally and hardly touched Lahm for the first yellow. It's mainly Ribery really, the wanker.

Where are our resident Germans and Bayern fans? I'd like to their perspective of the match and result especially @Balu.

Martinez is the worst for hounding refs. Absolute cnut.

The looked nervy. I was surprised I think the atmosphere and the occasion got to them. Also they wasn't sure how if United we're going to turn up or not.

I was thinking about this during the game, is this Bayern Munich team better than Barcelona (2009-2011). IMO I would say no they lack the cutting edge. That edge that was provided by Messi for Barca. Robben and Ribery are both great players but they can't do the job Messi did in Pep's previous system. They simply can't cover the hole that is there. Bayern are a great side but lack that cutting edge to be the best side IMO.

They looked noncommittal today in attack. Complacency is a rare weakness in Bayern's game.

They also had the possession but lacked the efficiency that defines their game today. 3 shots on target out of 16. Perhaps it's because of the way we set out to defend.

They started very well, but at times it was almost like a caricature, the way they were playing with useless one-twos 40 metres from the goal and under no pressure. They were up against a well drilled team, I thought, but still lacked real imagination at times. However, we did block a few shots that seemed bound to be on target (which Dave probably would've stopped ) and there was a very tight moment where Robben found Ribéry with a superb pass, and Ribéry crossed in front of goal but Mandzukic was a bit late to it.

All in all, not as impressive as I thought they might be, though their technical ability is great. However, I think that they get much more space in the Bundesliga (from what I've seen), in the CL this season where teams have been more disciplined, they've been a bit less impressive I guess.

Losing Javi Martinez and Schweinsteigger for the second leg is a big, big loss for them, with Thiago already out as well. Who will come in for them?

Lahm - Kroos, Götze is my guess for the 1-2 in midfield. Though Götze really has been shit for weeks now, so maybe Shaqiri gets a chance or we play with Müller and Mandzukic in a 4231.

No reason for you to get slated, we were subpar at best all night. No aggressiveness whatsoever in our play, just passing it around like we are 3:0 up. Pep should have started Mandzukic in this game, the moment he came on we started playing better. The whole team just didn't perform as they should have. The return leg is going to be much tougher now, no Javi and Bastian might hurt us. At least Dante will be back from suspension but that leaves our bench suffering a bit. Hopefully they can pick up some form, as our form the last couple of matches hasn't been incredible. Some players need to start performing better, if we play like we did yesterday then we are not winning the CL. Won't even make it to the final as a team in much better form and with more clinical finishing (I mean no disrespect to United here btw) is going to finish us off.

That being said fair play to United. I was impressed by your performance in the second half, after Kagawa was brought in. You started playing much, much better and for me you should have won the game. We didn't deserve much on the night, I may get slated for this but that's my opinion. Also, United in the CL are looking like a completely different team than the one in the league. 7th place really doesn't do you justice to be fair. Great defending as well in the match, was expecting you to struggle with that many injuries but was proven wrong.

Opinions from a Munich fan in Newbs.

Cheers. And what about in CB?

EDIT: ah read in Ruht's message Dante is back from suspension.

Yeah, it's probably

Mandzukic/Müller
Ribery Götze Kroos Robben
Lahm
Alaba Dante Boateng Rafinha
Neuer

or

Mandzukic
Ribery Müller Robben
Kroos Lahm
Alaba Dante Boateng Rafinha
Neuer

Let's hope Ribery picks up an injury as well. Might motivate Robben to have one his - ' I have to do it all by myself' games.

first of all, congrats to United. The team really stepped up and performed very well. I think that the draw is a fair result. United had the better chances. In my opinion Bayern had two problems. The defense against long balls and the final pass.
The defense was just about bad individual performance. Welbeck was almost always against 2 players (Martinez + Boateng), but they still couldnt control him. Welbeck played fantastic (except the finish), but on this level you have to win 2v1 situations. There is no excuse for some of these tackles.
A lot of pundits praised the header of Vidic, but he had acres of space. Our zonal marking still fails from time to time and not all the players are always comfortable with it; but I dont think that this is a big problem. Shit happens.
Offensively we played well until we had to make the crucial pass. We got passed your fullbacks quite a few times but all the crosses ended in no-man's land. Müller was non existent. The few times Müller played as CF, his performances were incredible disappointing. He is way better when he plays with Mandzukic/Götze or on the right wing. He needs space to run into, that he doesnt have when he starts as CF. I thought that we played better after Müller was substituted for Mandzukic.

I think the result is okay for both sides and the second leg will be very exciting.

Mandzukic/Götze
Ribery Götze/Müller Kroos Robben
Lahm
Alaba Dante Boateng Rafinha
Neuer

The way Welbeck exposed Bayern's CBs last night is one of the reasons why I think Madrid would beat Bayern in a CL final or over two legs. Ronaldo/Bale would be rampant on the wings and Alaba is actually pretty suspect defensively.
