Bayern Munich

Are you and other fans worried about this game or do you think it will be a formality? I was speaking to Bayern fan after the game at OT and while he was pissed off with the 1-1 draw he didn't seem to think there was any chance of them going out.
I'm mostly excited. I love games like that, always expected it to be close. Highly doubt it will be a formality, even if we score early, United just need a goal and everything is possible again. Just look at the United - Bayern game 4 years ago and what happened after United went 3-0 up. I'm confident we go through, expect us to win 2-1 or 3-1, but I would never say, that there's no chance for United to get a result. But I'm usually more pessimistic than others, most Bayern fans I know believe we'll beat you, haven't heard anyone call it a formality though. It's a bit difficult to predict what will happen. I can see United parking the bus again and hoping for a goal on the counter. I know you need at least one goal to go through, but your best bet is probably still to not concede, rely on your individual quality in attack and if it doesn't work, change it for the last 20-25 minutes and push for a goal then. So we need to improve, find a way to create more chances than last time. If you defend as good as in the first leg, I'm sure we get to see exciting last minutes and another dramatic ending between the two teams.

I think Pep will starve us of possession and if we defend deep, he will not try to force the issue like in the first leg as they already have the away goal advantage. If it remains goalless for 60 minutes or so, we will have to go for it and then game will open up. That will actually make it really exciting. But it all depends on whether we get the first goal. If we don't, we will end up buckling under the pressure which has been our hallmark this season.

I'd rather it stayed 0-0 until 60th minute or so than see us score very early into the game. Put Bayern to sleep and they snatch a goal late into the game is the only way we're going to knock them out IMO, score early and they will put 4 past us, that's how I see it.

I think we have to score first. Be it in the first minute or the last. If Bayern score first, it could be a rout.

Score early and their arses will be twitching every time they go forward and leave any space in behind as they know if they concede another they have a very difficult task, one they are capable of but not easy by any means.

Its only a myth that scoring early is a bad thing. If United is down by a goal its almost over, while when they score first it looks fairly good. It is the first match of the season where Bayern has genuine pressure; if they are 0:1 down, the team might become flustered.
I dont know any Bayern fan that thinks that this match is already a done deal. Would be pretty stupid after a 1:1, wouldnt it?

I don't think one goal changes a lot here. They need to score one goal anyway, so why would it be almost over if United concedes a goal? A 2nd goal for either team would be significant, one goal isn't imo.

I agree with Pedro - I think United NEED to score first tonight. If Bayern score first then I can see us getting edgy and being opened up more easily than if we score first. If Bayern score first, then they'll gain confidence too and go for the jugular. If they get two, I cannot see us coming back from 2-0 down, rather more likely that we concede another as we go searching for a way back.

Not sure about that, I won't relax until we're 3 goals up or the game is over .

Are you going to the game? Did you get tickets in the end?

Yep - will be in block 234 and will meet strongwalker at the Jagerhof in Garching Hochbrück before the game if your interested.

I'm in the city, visiting my parents and friends before the game, so I can't make it in time all the way up to Garching.

Cool. Enjoy (the time with your parents and friends ;))

So after surviving the quarter final, who do you prefer to play against in the semis?
I´d like to avoid Atletico. A tie against real would be entertaining and its always fun to win against them . Chelsea could be pretty nasty, but I´d love to beat them as revenge for the lost final.

I hope Atletico will win it but if not zi would choose even Real Madrid over Bayern... To me, Ribery and Robben are worse than Pepe and Ramos... this season.

It's fecking frustrating. It could have been Dortmund, PSG and Barca and made for exciting attacking football in all games. Now it's a choice between Ancelotti, Mourinho and Simeone. It'll be a nightmare either way, all of our remaining games will be against well parked busses. Atletico looks the most dangerous one at the moment, but games against Ancelotti and Mourinho teams are always annoying as hell. I really hate that semi final line-up.

It'll be Chelsea anyway. It was Germany vs England throughout the CL campaign and it turned into Bayern vs the Premier League. We played City in the group stages, Arsenal in the first knockout round, United in the quarterfinal, it has to be Chelsea now with lots of annoying Guardiola vs Mourinho drama.

It's impossible to make up for our loss in 2012. Just like beating United again and again in knockout ties never made up for '99 :(.

I hope on Real in the semi finals. We always handled CR7 pretty well and are their Bestia Negra.

And in the final I want Mourinho and Chelsea. Two CL finals revenges in one. For 2010 and 2012.

I would be careful with wanting Jose in the semi or the final. They would do a better job of parking the bus and hitting on the counter than we did.

Exactly my thinking about the potential match-up.

It's possible by beating them in the final.
No way, no. The euphoria before the game, the atmosphere when we scored and how it all turned into a nightmare after it, countless grown men with tears in their eyes walking down the streets afterwards quietly, thousands of people and not one spoke a word. It was all so wrong, it really should have been one of the greatest football parties ever, it felt like there can't be anything better than winning that trophy in your own stadium and celebrating with all the fans at home in your own city. There's no revenge for it, it's lost and we can't get it back.

Of course, there would be a bit of satisfaction, if we beat Chelsea in a CL final now, but it can't make up for the final at home. We fecked it up, nothing can change anything about that feeling :(

Not even a proper 5-0 demolition in a final ?

Nope . I want that damn party, I want the whole city celebrating like never before after a football match . A friend of mine recently said, that it isn't that bad because it definitely influenced our mentality, it made us stronger and lead to that incredible treble winning season. All true, but feck that 'can a loss be a win' mentality, winning the CL final at home is way more special than a fecking treble and it would have been way more fun than the party last season, I'm sure of that.

I guess I see things differently (less dramatically ?).

I would enjoy playing Real and Chelsea. Real because i hate that mixture of divas, thugs and overrated egos. Chelsea because it would be nice to hear Mourinho whine about how they were cheated for years to come.

According to BILD Bayern München is heavily interested in the 19year old defender Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao who has a buyout-clause of € 36m and plays an extraordinary season for the Basque club. The report describes the Frenchman as a technically skilled and quick defender whose primary position is CB but who can also play LB when needed (which makes sense for Bayern since their LB backup will leave the club).

There's not really a lot of need to spend money next summer with Lewandowski arriving on a 'free' transfer. So if this young lad is the guy Guardiola needs to stabilize defense, then I'm all for spending the cash. After all the last Basque player Bayern signed from Athletic played a huge role in winning the treble.

Who was that, Lizarazu?

From what I've seen of him (probably only about 10 games max, so don't expect an expert view), Laporte is a brilliant defender who could play for any top club. €36m though? That's not cheap, and it doesn't really need said anymore about how difficult it is to get Athletic Club to budge from the release clause...

In all honesty, I've never heard of the player you've mentioned, but Bayern could do with another defender. Bayern's defence is the weakest part in their team but they are protected well by the midfielder's, similar to Barcelona in a way.

Other than improving the defence (which is still pretty good mind) you lot don't really need much improvement in other areas. I don't expect you'll spend big in the summer.

They also had success with Lizarrazu who is also, Basque French. Aymeric Laporte is a very talented young defender. If United sign a defender this season he would be one of my first choices. And if Barca are able to sign players they should also take a look at him.

That's better than my knowledge, I've only seen four or five matches of Athletic Bilbao this season (against Real, Barca and Atlético). Consequently I have no idea about the individual quality of the player.

It wouldn't be the first time for Bayern to overpay for a player if they truly believe he will elevate the team to another level. Martínez wasn't worth more than € 25-30m, but his signature proved vital for the 2012/13 treble winning campaign. All that matters for Bayern is the question whether this young lad fits the profile and will make the team better. They have the money and no other areas in need of investment so € 36m are not the problem. Given his age he would receive a pretty low initial salary. A five year deal worth € 50-55m including the transfer fee seems realistic.

Bixente Lizérazu is obviously a Bayern club legend and arguably the most complete left back of his generation, so yes so far Bayern had major success with Basque players. Perhaps him and Martínez could be decisive factors to convince Laporte to make the move to Bavaria. Barca is obviously always a tough competitor but aside from the transfer ban, isn't there that unresolved tax issue for Spanish clubs? As far as I recall from the Martínez transfer any Spanish club would have to pay taxes on top of the release clause which is not the case for foreign parties.

Laporte is brilliant; one of the best CBs in la liga this season. He would be my #1 CB signing and he´ll end up at a top club in the next 1-3 years. That said, I dont think that we need him this summer. Martinez will almost exclusively play as CB which means that we have Boateng, Martinez, Dante + Badstuber. Even if Badstuber doesnt recover that would be okay; if he regains his former level of performance, we are set anyway.
I hope, that the management waits one more year to assess the center-back position. Martinez needs a preseason to completely adapt to this position and Badstuber needs time for a comeback. Even so I rate Laporte and he also seems to be a decent lad, I want to see Martinez or Badstuber as starter. Buying laporte means, that one of these 2 wont play a significant role for the club in the near future.

He's very, very good for his age. He's been one of the best central defenders in La Liga this season IMO; I think the LFP chose him as the best defender of the first stage. He's really fast when he's sprinting, not over the first few yards to me. He's awful at left back though. It's one of those scenarios where a footballer can play a position but they can't do it well. I think Valverde criticised him earlier this season after a bad game at left.

He's a big talent who doesn't really get the hype around Europe that he should be getting. I would love to see him play with Varane but I can't see it happening. I wonder if that's what Bayern will plan to do -- they can't get a major improvement so they'll try to nurture a talent who can become the best. Seems a bit risky.

I wonder if they'll even be able to get Laporte in the first place...considering how friendly their dealing with Athletic Club was retarding Martínez.

I had high expectations for Javi Martínez in central defense, he performed brilliantly on the position for Athletic Bilbao, but I think he's too slow to play in Guardiola's high line of defense. He's been struggling with pacy attackers who got behind him countless times this season, Aubameyang and Reus were just the icing on the cake last week.

Holger Badstuber also struggled a lot as part of Luis van Gaal's high pressing back-four and only recovered in Heynckes' thoroughly protected defense in a more reactive 4-2-3-1. I expect him to have the same difficulties as Martínez, if his body
is even up for the challenge of top-level football. There's a huge question-mark behind his future.

Then there's Dante who's still excellent on a good day, but he's aging and doesn't perform as well last season. I think he's slowly but surely declining.

In my view Bayern München cannot afford to pass on the right player only because of wishful thinking. Every fan hopes for Badstuber's successful return and a way to implement Schweinsteiger and Martínez successfully into Guardiola's playing stile. Doesn't mean it's realistic and definitely going to happen.

What made Guardiola also great at Barcelona was his ability to make tough choices for the greater good of the team. I'm not saying Laporte is the kind of player you want to make such a decision for, because I don't know him well enough. Missing out on him solely because of sentimental reasons, is not professional though. It would be very sad to see Badstuber or Martínez leave the club, but at the end of the day all that counts at Bayern is success and there's certainly demand for another top-class CB who suits Guardiola's stile.

Sell Martinez to us. Problem solved
