Ballon d’Or 2024 — post-Messi era

Nah he surpassed Busquets this year and he's not even finished his career. Busquets never finished in the top 20 of the Ballon d'Or, never deserved to either. There were always better players than him. Same can't be said of Rodri, who is a great midfielder. Rodri already finished 5th last year, and will likely win this year.
Busquets is better at a specific aspect of the game (basically beating the press with twists and turns) but overall ? I agree that Rodri is a more complete version of him.

Vinicius not winning it is not the greatest injustice in the Ballon D'Or history, so for me it's whatever.

Having said that, boycotting the ceremony is what I would like to see more of. This is 21st century and giving such prestigious award based on vibes and votes from random biased journalists is absurd. More players and clubs should boycott this shite so maybe it gets reformed in the future. At the very least the award should be positional. Then the criterias should be more precisely defined and the weight of international football should be severely dimished since it basically excludes half of the world's best players from ever winning it. It would also stop random players like Jorginho and Lautaro from appearing high on those lists.
That would be a nice start.

Busquets was very good at specific skills I agree, but lacked the personality of Rodri, the goals, the assists, the defending, the physicality. Busquets in his peak years without Xavi and Iniesta often got overwhelmed for Barca when he was supposed to be the main man (Liverpool, Roma and other defeats) and couldn't lead Spain to any success without them.

Rodri can do the sort of things Busquets did to a very high level, whereas Busquets couldn't do the other things what Rodri can do. Busquets could never be the star midfielder in a Euros-winning side, whereas if you put Rodri beside Xavi and Iniesta you could argue they would be just as strong.

As an award that is always a bit of a joke, this just cements it. I am genuinely amazed it is not Vini.

You talk about players who make you love the game, who take risk and who can do things no one else can do - that's literally him.

Nah, that racial abuse is obviously over the top, but he is an absolute piece of shit, who is asking for it. He taunts players/fans and acts disrespectfully.
He doesn't deserve the racial abuse, but he is doing everything in his powers to be treated like trash.
'Asking for it'...

Keep digging that hole, buddy. Making yourself look like an absolute tool.

Didn't expect Mainoo to get 3rd place in u21 balon dor. Wow. He's in stellar company with yamal 1st and gular 2nd.

If you are putting Racial Abuse over the top & asking for it in the same sentence, you are the trash like your name says.

Eeesh. Horrible take. And not even coherent. He “doesn’t deserve the racial abuse”, yet is simultaneously “asking for it”.

Vinicius never had this effect on me. Ronaldinho, Neymar, Hazard, Iniesta or even players like Pogba, Marcelo etc. made me love the game far more than him. The fact that he's a twat doesn't help either. When I think of players that can do things no one else can, I don't think of Vinicius. But that's only me probably.

Agreed, I feel the same way. I feel he's efficient but not that player who makes me want to turn on the TV or pay money to watch.

Just scrap the whole thing entirely.

I blame Ronaldo and Messi for making this a thing. Nobody really gave a hoot about it prior to those two but now you've got all these players turning up in their suits like it's the Oscars and getting upset when they don't pick up their little subjective popularity contest trophy. It's stupid.

The only trophies that matter are the ones you compete to win with your team.

The Beckenbauer segment was way too long and cringe, the family seemed really uncomfortable to be on stage so long. The song was wtf?

You shouldn't be. City buy everything they can

I feel like you’re letting your dislike of him cloud your judgement of him as a player. He is quite dislikable but he’s done more than enough to beat off the competition here.

I mean I guess I’m not surprised - would be a fitting end to them. The pinnacle of their cheating, a player wins BdO, then has to play Crawley town next season in the non league.

Disgusted it isn't Vinicius, simply because if he'd won it the streak of no player born in the '90s having won it would have continued, potentially forever.

Fc Barcelona:
♂️ We are truly honored to be here. Thank you, @ballondor, for such a warm and gracious welcome.

lolllllll

This. It's an indication of the dearth of magical players around at the moment. Rodri is a top player but I don't think he's even on the level of Sergio Busquets. I'd take prime Kante and Makelele over him.

Maybe this is why some of us get overexcited at watching a certain 17 year old play. It's not so much him, it's the hope he represents, that it might not always be like this.
No paedophile/rape jokes before anyone thinks of posting one. Should go without saying really but have to post it as I know what some are like.

I did not say he deserves the racial abuse, rather than that when you can't handle the heat, maybe you shouldn't provoke so much and try getting your shit together?
Probably best for you to move away from that keyboard for the evening.

Some Real Madrid fans are incredibly pathetic in the way they're expressing their disappointment

What's even crazy is Vini was injured and only started 32 games for Madrid, comapred to Rodri who started 46 for City, Rodri also played over 5000 mins for club and country, while Vini played about 3600-3700 mins. Vini entire campiagn was based off of 2 months period were he played amazingly against many top teams too. This doesn't make him the best player in the season, Rodri was far more consistent and top for the entire season, even than while Vini was injured for part of the first half of the season he was also being outshined by Bellingham when he was available and they were running his Ballon Dor campaign.

This award is a PR, at the end Rodri PR was stronger than Vini and Bellingham PR.

What channel is this on in UK

Vinicius should have been sent off vs Leipzig in the return leg, that's the true injustice. He shouldn't even be in this convo.
How quickly they forget.

Yeah it was Bellingham for the Ballon d’Or for nearly the whole year, he had a far higher average rating per game for Real Madrid and considered the main man. Then he was mediocre from the quarters onwards in the CL and all of a sudden Vini was the ‘man’, almost ignoring what happened previously.

I think Rodri is the best player in the world in his position. I can understand the argument for him winning Balon d'Or. He walks into every team in world football and improves it.

I do think it's quite uninspiring though. I seen a tweet that had the top 10 for 2013;

Ronaldo, Messi, Ribery, Zlatan, Neymar, Iniesta, RvP, Robben, Bale, Pirlo.

I don't think he touches that top 10. I think the standard of football overall is just a lot lower than it was 10/15 years ago.

Rodri winning is probably deserving but my god is it underwhelming.

He definitely has a claim with overtaking 2013 Pirlo at the very least.

Agree entirely, it's a load of shite and people who get butthurt because a player from their team or their favourite player didn't win it are morons.

Also, when you see gowls like TAA saying they'd rather win this than the world cup, you can see the mentality some of these players have.
