Ballon d’Or 2024 — post-Messi era

The state of Real Madrid and their fans. Poor Bellingham not good enough to be their PR poster boy this campaign.

A huge round of applause for the organisers of Ballon d’Or 2024 . Their incompetence meant majority of people tuning in had to rely on dodgy YouTube streams to be able to watch the show.

Love how City have a Ballon d'or winner and tomorrow all the talk will be United

Ronaldo, Messi, Ribery, Zlatan, Neymar, Iniesta, RvP, Robben, Bale, Pirlo.

I don't think he touches that top 10. I think the standard of football overall is just a lot lower than it was 10/15 years ago.

When comparing the retired best vs the current best it is very normal too feel like this, because you have alredy seen the retired ones at their very best and compare that level to mostly players with many gears left or at their level right now.

24 year old Ibra was not better then anyone 24 or younger from this years top 10 in my view.

We thought Ronaldo's obsession with this award couldn't be beaten in terms of childishness but Vinicius put that to bed. Would be great if he never won it.

Ibra when he was 24 wasn’t in this list.

Anyone still care about this crap.

I stopped caring when they robbed Lewandowski some years ago.

I still don’t understand why people find this trophy important? Ridiculous.

Rodri was a level above everybody else last season imo. Fantastic player.
Surprised Haaland was 5th.

Saw this guy at the stadium in Malmo this evening, was a bit of a surprise. Anyways, no 5 seems about right.

Not sure what the controversy is with this one. Both were the part of a group of the best players last season, I dont think Vini was that much better than Rodri, to the point its clear cut that he should have won the award. In fact he wasn't even the best player at Madrid for the first half of the season.

Any player dominating an international tournament always has a big chance of winning the award, we've seen it before with Modric and Cannavaro.

The behaviour of Madrid their players and Vinis old clubs and Brazil NT is a joke. Total lack of respect for a fellow professional in Rodri, the way they are all writing messages on social media, saying Vini was robbed.

The Real Madrid fans and players meltdown has been absolutely glorious.

Right, it used to be the best footballer in the world award.
And he has a strong claim no? Vini wasn't La Liga's POTY (it was Bellingham) and he didn't play well at the Copa America too. Rodri won the best player at the Euros and was pivotal for his club too. Seems fair, great to see a midfielder win it.

They started hounding Rodri to join them next season around the time of Euros, I wonder if he will want to join this buch of entitled brats.

Though they may have changed their mind because of his injury anyway.

When Rodri started scoring and assisting goals it was over, he might be the best midfielder in PL history by the time he leaves City.

L. Martínez is one of the most overrated players in the world for me. He has some great qualities like his ball striking or work rate off the ball, but I don't think his game would translate very well into a more difficult league or even another role in his current team where the ideal circumstances aren't provided for him by the system.

Not sure there's any argument for Carvajal other than team achievements and consistency throughout the season. He's not even anywhere near to being the best player in his position.

I agree that it is a bit sad to watch the top 10 list, compared to the list 10-15 years ago. However, Martinez was Serie A top scorer, Copa America top scorer, and he also scored the winning goal in the Copa final. Clearly, that shows that he can translate his game to another system/opposition. It would have been strange to leave him out.

Lame from Real Madrid not to send anyone. Carlo couldnt pick up his award.

The fact people actually sit and watch this is fascinatingly odd. It's so boring? Entertainment awards in general have been a dated and dull concept for well over a decade at this point.

Nah he surpassed Busquets this year and he's not even finished his career. Busquets never finished in the top 20 of the Ballon d'Or, never deserved to either. There were always better players than him. Same can't be said of Rodri, who is a great midfielder. Rodri already finished 5th last year, and will likely win this year.
Rodri finishing high in the Ballon D'Or voting is a function of there being few good players around now, not his quality. Busquets was the better footballer.

Kind of sums up what Pep's done to modern football that what his first player to win the award since Messi (correct me if I'm wrong) is a defensive midfielder.

Whilst I find the Madrid meltdown funny, this is nonsense. Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the least 'classy' players in history and has won this award 5 times. Football is an emotional, competitive game and the stakes are very high, passions sometimes boil over. Winning the award should be about performances only, not some ridiculous, nebulous concept of 'class.'

Agree, Ronaldo is and forevermore will be a massive twat but don't forget Messi here too. His hand on the neck antics have been given a pass for too long. Ask South American players what they think of him as a person and you'd be surprised

Voted club of the year, manager of the year and 2nd, 3rd and 4th for player of the year = "not respected".

Babies. Uefa should present them with a golden dummy.

I don't disagree with your general sentiment but Vini is who he is. Punching the Leipzig player in the throat was pretty cnutish, nothing justified that

If what I am reading is true, that is actually not the issue. The issue is, according to these sources, that the organization was leaking to the the club that Vinicius was the winner for weeks and it is just in the very last moment that the club knows from different sources that the list was actually wrong. That is what the club interprets as a lack of respect to say the least.

Whether Rodri wins the award or anyone else wins it does not, in itself, imply any conflict.

It started mainly with Ronaldo but you're seeing it more and more. Players caring about individual over team success. Alexander Arnold said last week he's rather win the Balon Dor than the World Cup.

You see all these celebrations pointing at themselves, pointing to their name. Most of these current superstars care more about themselves than the team. We've had a good few of them players over the last 5 or 6 years.

They're more than players, they're brands. The reaction to not winning it ("i will come back 10 times stronger") is also very telling of the mindset these players have.
A lot of the big names are NBA fans and they have adopted many of their individual traits
