Ballon d’Or 2024 — post-Messi era

Apparently no Madrid players are attending, rumours are Vinicius or any other Madrid haven’t won.
Don't like City but the entitlement of Madrid is always off the charts, so it would be pretty funny. Vini doesn't have an outstanding case either that it's an outrage if he doesn't win it. He wouldn't be undeserved, but also there have been far better players than him that haven't won the award.

I don’t think that Rodri deserves it whatever people say. Quality midfielder, would love have him running our midfield. From that to saying he’s the best player in the world is a huge stretch.
I suppose the excuse is that they really want to hammer down the point that what you do for your national team is as or more important than clubs performance. Vinicius has been average at best for Brazil.

If Rodri wins he will be a good winner as could be Vini. Not in a disproportionate way over the others but deserved.

I'd give it to Rodri and then abolish this award.
As this will not happen I'd prefer if there were some more categories as I find it hard to compare players across positions.

Mental that Lautaro Martinez does not enter the top 10 on the "leaked" lists available.
Top scorer by miles in Serie A and won it. Top scorer in Copa America and won it. It's funny how he's not even in any of these conversations.

It's as if everyone has decided that he had a bad World Cup in 2022 and is therefore shit and nothing he ever does going forward will mean he isn't shit.

Yeah I can see how people get frustrated at double standards and also why so many players end up at Real Madrid. Real Madrid PR is on overdrive, whereas if you play as well for someone else you don't get half the hype.

He basically had a year identical and even better than Messi’s in 2021 yet one won and the other couldn’t even make the podium.

Because it is a joke of an award and a popularity contest.

Rodri winning ballon d’or. What happened to the game I love?

I'm not really sure why it became accepted wisdom that Vinicius Jr. was a lock for the Balon d'Or tbh.

Vini was atrocious for Brazil and went out on a whimper in Copa America. Back in the day you all criticised Messi for not performing for Argentina - even though he was far better than Vini for Brazil).

Deserved for Rodri as he performed for both club and country!‬

Because Rodri wasn't great for City? He was consistently amazing for them, never really getting below a 8/10 performance (unlike Vinícius who actually wasn't that consistent throughout the year but saved his devastating best for the most important part of it, outshining everyone in the CL play-offs).

I'm lamenting the lack of attacking flair players in the game. I'm not doing Vini vs Rodri
Did Viní lose his attacking flair just because he (supposedly) didn't win the award?

As much as I dislike City.

It's hard to argue he hasn't been one of the brst players in the world this last couple of years. Even for Spain at the Euros he was brilliant.

It's just a popularity contest anyway, nothing to get too worked up about.

And city miss him quite a lot, they don't look amazing without him.

Mbappe will probably be the only man in Madrid happy about tonight’s news.

Presume due to winning the CL in a year where there's been no obvious, standout contender? Wouldn't be an unjustified win but agreed it's not exactly like giving it to peak Messi.

Does seem weird to go Rodri but not Carvajal. Won La Liga, won CL (scored in the final), won the Euros.

Certainly more deserving I would say.

In terms of what he does/the role he plays it's hard to argue there's many players much more influential than him right now. For all City's wealth and resources they miss him massively whenever he's out.

I'm just partial to the likes of Neymar, and in my pinion, Vinicius doesn't have that calibre of flair. Also the implication I made was that there used to be more. I don't follow Vinicius nowhere near enough to assert he deserves this over XYZ, though, but he's been performing at a high level for a while. Rodri/a DM winning it, is similarly not catering to my sensibilities

Nowhere near the player though, and that should count for something atleast.

Yeah but it's a bit funny because Real Madrid have another perfectly legitimate contender: Jude Bellingham.

What a joke. Arguably the biggest robbery in the history of this award. People who think that Rodri deserves it are either City fans or just saying it out of hate towards Madrid.

1.Rodri wasn´t even the best City player, Foden was (voted 2023/24 Etihad Player of Season by City fans!)
2. Also, he wasn't the best Spanish player at the Euros. Carvajal, Fabian Ruiz, Williams, Olmo, Yamal were as good or better than him.
3. The Champions League is more important than the Euros (only the World Cup outweighs the CL)

(We had 16 tournaments between 1960-2020. 6 times the Euros winner also won The Ballon d'Or: Beckenbauer 1972, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge 1980, Platini 1984, Van Basten 1988, Matthias Sammer 1996, Ronaldo 2016. The Euros winners won 6 out of 16 Golden Balls. Since the CL reform in 1992, 2 out of 8. It would've been even less but till 1995 the Golden Ball was reserved only for players of European origin!)

4. He was knocked out in the quarterfinals by Vinicius, Carvajal, Bellingham, and he lost the FA Cup final against poor United side.

All 3 Real Madrid players did more to win it.

To all people saying about Real Madrid PR or nonsense like that. Real Madrid PR is 6 CL in the last 10 years, 2 in the last 3. It means that their players are just better than the rest, whether you like it or not. That's reality not PR.

Carvajal shouldn't be in the top 20. And neither should Lautaro.

It's all a bit pathetic. All this indignation over an individual bauble.

Reminds me of American sports with the attention all those MVP/DPOY/OPOY awards get and the importance attached to them. Load of shite.

 Real Madrid are such a Mickey Mouse club.
