Gaming Baldur's Gate III by Larian Studios (PS5, PC, Mac, Xbox Series X|S)

Started my 3rd playthough yesterday.
After playing sorcerer first, then monk, i went with bard this time, and i must say, it feels very underwhelming.
Planning to go full support with him, have Minthara, Gale and Astarion in the party, and not change to easiest difficulty when things get tough.
Hope bard gets stronger, according to the class rankings i found, many have bard in S tier, so hope they're right.

Where/ when are you generally turning the difficulty down?

On the first playthrough i was struggeling, never played this type of game before, but didn't find out that you could change difficulty before i got desperate at the inn in act 2.
On second round i changed it much earlier, and tried to focus on playing the game a bit different, have other companions and play their story, and learn a bit more about the game.
Went into the game totally blind, so it was a rough journey.

I only found Shadowheart after the crash, had no clue what the portal thing with the hand was, then i was attacked by a white haired guy with annoying voice. Obviously didn't want him in my camp.
Did a lot of funny things, looking back at it.
I googled a bit later, and found out what to do with the hand out of the portal, so i got him after a while.

I’m bard and it’s S tier because you can basically talk your way out of 80% of fights in the game, if you want. You also have access to every spell in the game, and can pass a lot of skill checks. They are the epitome of “jack of all trades”. If you have 3 other specialised characters in your party then a bard is a great option as a mix of healing/aoe/Crowd control in combat.

that said, they can feel a bit underpowered early on in the game, it’s only at level 4 or 5 my guy felt good in combat.

Casters and Monks are very strong in a fight. The only way from there is down really. Bards are very good at skill checks (best in game?) and have some fun interactions that others dont get, some of the strength isn't fight related. In a fight they're a good healer, have some very good buffs (bardic inspiration) and have a lot of cc. They're not really naturally suited to doing damage themselves, I'm sure theres builds that do but its not a focus. They're more about making your sorcerer and monks do as much damage as possible and being pretty safe doing it.

Yeah, i think i'm level 3 at the moment, and i don't really have an attack ability apart from hitting them for like 3 dmg
My plan is to go with Minthara and Astarion, don't tried them before, think both paladin and rogue can be strong, and then go with Gale for the ranged dps, not really done much of his story either.
Going semi evil bard this time, and considering "durge" paladin for next game - which will probably be my last game for a while... i'll be at like 220-230 hours when i'm done with this one :nervous:

Yeah, my plan is to go support/healer and build the other ones for pure dps output.
Bard was the one that seemed most different to sorc and monk - must admit i loved my monk playthrough - went full ilithid with him :)

What party are you rocking?

Party composition is everything. What's your main character's class?

So I’m not really that far at all. I’ve had about 3 battles outside the tutorial area on the ship and struggled with them all. At the moment I’m in some chapel in the first area, although I used my lockpicking to my advantage to pick some of the enemies off one by one.

I’m a rogue, and party is currently the woman you rescue from the ship at the start, wizard cnut stuck in the portal and then some long haired guy that tried to attack me. I’m not really sure what their classes are but the one woman can heal which is handy.

Dont they start with a pretty good damage spell? Disonant whispers or something

Act one is there an easy way to get down to the hag because these traps are a fecking ball ache.

The illithid powers are a lot of fun.

Convinced my whole party to go half-illithid. The whole gang flying around blasting people like a bunch of dickhead X-Men is pretty great, and I'm going to miss that on my upcoming goody two-shoes playthrough. :(

Throw large stones/objects at the vents and they will be covered.
Disarm or shoot the exploding flowers and they will explode.

Assuming that someone in the party succeeded at the required Perception checks.

Nah, you fireball the toxic cloud, wait a sec and then you can see the vents without any checks. Pretty sure about it. You also don‘t need large objects to cover it up. Think I used some daggers, a shoe and the likes.

Orin was a lot easier than I expected.

My sophisticated strategy of throwing Lae'zel at enemies to repeatedly hit them really hard continues to reap dividends.

I literally destroyed her in the first round of combat. Gale popped his special “magic missile on steroids” spell to strip her unstoppable stacks. Used haste potion and with the second action got her prone with an ice spell. Then I just buffed up my MC as much as possible and went ham on her with about 7 attacks and she melted.

On the one hand, anticlimactic. On the other, made me feel like a goddamn god.

This is also, surprisingly, the best use of a rope in the entire game (something that I'm pretty disappointed about).

Agreed. Rope and shovel were sth I got asap, even multiple ropes, one for everyone :D don‘t think I ever had to use one. Shovel, I‘m not sure you even need to carry one to dig up a chest but I guess at least that‘s the case.

Ropes were really useful in Divinity 2. It’s weird they’re just a worthless item in this. Especially when the terrain is so multi layered.

I feel bad... i recruited Minthara.

Respecced Jehaira to gloomstalker/assassin/fighter build and I'm pretty sure I've broken the game

6 attacks in one turn, starting with an ambush that crits with some armour piece, followed by snaring, arrow spam and then going back into stealth only to repeat the next turn. I've solo'd some tough enemies using just her.

I snuck into Cazador's chamber and Jehaira killed the fecker before there was any chance of dialogue, pretty sure even Astarion was confused

Finally cleared the goblin camp. I’m in the Underdark now (I think) but not sure I should be there just yet. Going back to the grove to see what’s going on with that lot.

those fecking umberlee water temple cnuts keep shoving my characters off the edge
Proper safety measures in construction are clearly not a priority in Baldur's Gate.

This game has a stupid amount of content. Act 3 just keeps snowballing on me.

Are you using Lae'zel?
If so, i would consider the mountain pass, her story there is quite cool.

Act 3 is massive, I’m shocked as I remember in Divinity 2 it was quite a bit shorter than act 1. This just keeps going and going.

This game has got me completely hooked.

Started a coop game last night with my gf and already it's playing out completely differently than my solo campaign.

I can see me playing this a lot over the years.

Bought this, never played a game like this so hoping it lives up to the hype and hoping I actually like the gameplay.

Stick with it if you're overwhelmed at the start. All gets a bit clearer the more you play.

The biggest compliment I can give it is that I’m not finished yet and I am already thinking about what to do for my next playthrough. But for my own good I probably need a break for a while.

I am not sure what it says about me but I am having a hard time with my second play-through. I really wanted to go dark, like go murder hobo and leave all the bodies in my wake dark. I just can’t do it. Dark Urge is out (he kills Alfira and feck that, her song is a top 10 highlight of this game). The Tieflings? I’m not killing kids. The Druids? I guess??

feck it, I guess I’m pivoting to a reformed evil gloomstalker who does all the good things.

I'm the same and I've barely scratched the surface of Act 1. It's a testiment to the writing; I want to see how differently things can play out with the other choices.

I did it the other way around, i let the druids and thiefling fight, so i didn't have to kill anyone.

Don’t get much time to play it unfortunately and have found it pretty tough so have lowered the difficulty. But really enjoying it so far, not entirely sure what I’m supposed to do in the Underdark, can’t seem to get to the quest marker. However, just tackled the quest with the missing cargo and was able to defeat the enemies in pretty awesome fashion!
Get the leader to tell its pack to kill the two humans in the cave, then get the leader to kill its pack, then get the leader to eat itself!

I've just finished my first play through and loved it! Many, many hours sunk into the game but I know there's so much I missed, it's my first time playing this kind of game.

I do have a worry about another run though, the game became so much more fun as you got near level 12, I'm not sure starting from level one is all that appealing. Then again, I didn't get to cap until the start of act 3 and would love to try and get there sooner, we'll see but starfield is calling too
