Arturo Vidal

Not trying to be negative but this whole Vidal thing really does smell of another Sneijder, Lucas Moura, Thiago, Fabregas, etc, etc.
I'll be hugely surprised if we get him

I'll be surprised if we do not start next season with a marquee signing whether it be Di Maria, Vidal or both.
I think Woodie has something to prove and we have the money to spend.

And what if LVG has designs on both of them ahead of a DM or DLP in a midfield 3?

LVG doesn't do static systems, so plenty of tinkering or adjusting should be expected and from that, there's a myriad of ways to use both players in systems outside of a flat 4-4-2.

If the two of them were here, I'm pretty sure we'd see Carrick behind them in some kind of 4-3-3 for the biggest games, and after that, we really should have the overall superiority to implement even a flat 4-4-2 against other sides and come out on top with a Vidal-Herrara coupling.

I think the wide men we have or get in are just as important to a 4-4-2 working as the centre of midfield, so a lot rests on that, imo.

With Rooney, Mata and Kagawa - three players who can play in the no.10 role, I doubt he'll play an orthodox 4-3-3 with 3 centre midfielders. Think we'll likely see more of a 4-2-3-1 or 4-2-1-3. And even if he did play with 3 centre midfielders, then what would happen to Mata and Rooney?

What's the difference between a 4-2-3-1 and a 4-2-1-3? I am guessing the wide players get more of a license to bomb forward, or is there some thing else.

Yeah that mainly it. I think the main difference is that the 4-2-3-1 creates two banks of four defensively and the 4-2-1-3 ends up having only three player in front of your defense while the three attacking players stay higher up the field in most cases.

That shouldn't be a reason to sign players. Unless a player is part of our plan, there is no need to sign just for the sake of a "Marquee" signing.

If that's the case I don't think it will suit us at all as things stand. Mata should be the one playing behind the striker and relieving the wide men from defensive duties will mean more burden on him, and that's a side of his game which is questionable. On the other hand, our wide players are more workmanlike, except for Januzaj, and are all capable of putting in a decent shift defensively. Of course, this may well change based on the signings we make.

There's no telling what he will or won't do. LVG is famed for his flexibility and relies on the intelligence of his players to be able to execute sometimes eclectic systems.

Mata as well as Rooney can easily play ahead of such a midfield, or even combine to make a 5-man one.

I don't think anything can be set in stone with regard to what Van Gaal definitely wouldn't do.

I believe if he did utilise a Herrara-Vidal pairing in a flat 4-4-2, we are likely to see a CB pushed up higher in behind them almost into a early 70's type sweeperish player. Whether he'd use Evans for that role or get someone else - the player has to be a good ball-playing defender - remains to be seen.

In terms of optimising the personnel at his disposal, I don't think it gets better than Van Gaal, so if he wants Vidal, I have complete confidence he'll want to get the absolute best out of him and Herrara.

How would a club have a "passing" interest? Either they want to sign him or they dont. Its not like buying a pair of shoes.
well not every single player you consider buying you end up putting a biding for, a player can be discussed, maybe even sounded out, but then for what ever reason the club not decide to peruse it.

Im not saying to buy a superstar and crowbar him into the side but Im sure LVG would like players such as Di Maria, Hummels and Vidal, who all 3 who can be considered marquee signings and would benefit our side immensely.

Signing him would take us up a notch. He can play in any sort of midfield, be it a 2 or a 3. He's a highly intelligent midfielder who's disciplined in his play despite it looking mildly reckless. Him and pogba displayed some of the most admirable 2 man midfield work when they played madrid and juve got a red card. I have no doubt he'd be the second coming of the great roy keane. Signing him would honestly feel like going back to the good old keane-scholes days as he'll probably be played with Herrera.

I think his stats are misleading people. Some are also being misled by how juve use him. He's no attacking mid, he's not even a no8 as his passing just isn't at that sort of level(luckily for us, we've already purchased herrera). He's a defensive box to box midfielder. A keane, an essien type of player. Due to how juve set up its allowed him more freedom to run into the box especially with the sort of dominance that juve exert on the opposition in their league. He's in truth a defensive genius who works harder than any midfielder out there and can smell a lose ball from a million miles away.

Now to his price, 50 million is a little top heavy as I'd expect that to be on the heads of match winners but we all saw how the big funds bayern spent on martinez payed dividends. 35million quid should be his price but football doesn't work like that. We're trying to take a world class footballer from a team that have no ambition in selling their star player. Paying over the top within reason in such a situation is warranted IMO.

We seal this then we have the best midfield in the league IMO and one of the finest in world football. That's a huge improvement from whatever we had out there in the past few seasons. Get it done woody!

Imagine the following scenario:

Woodward asks LVG who he wants to sign. He mentions Vidal near the top of his list for midfield. So Woodward gets in touch with Vidal's agent to see if he's interested. Answer that comes back is a bit vague, not a total rejection but no great enthusiasm for leaving Juventus, nor joining United. Then discusses the matter with Juventus. Not interested in selling but will let United know if the situation changes.

Woodward explains to LVG what he has been told by the various parties. Should he make a bid or move on to the next target ?

Given we signed Herrera, I think this whole discussion (or a very similar one) happened early in the summer and United decided it wasn't a transfer that was achievable in this window.

I prefer to imagine this scenario:

Woodward tells LVG who we have been scouting and asks his opinion on these names and whether there are any other names he would like to add to the list. LVG says "your midfield is total shite, you need to get me at least two midfielders, preferably on this list Herrera and Vidal. I want you to make it happen, if you cant get them both then try for x, y and z." Woodward completes signing of Herrera.

Woodward then gets in touch with Vidal's people and Juve. The response that comes back from Vidal is that he likes Manchester United very much and he likes Van Gaal. Juve say he is one of their prized assets, they dont want to sell him. Woodward comes back to force the issue, says he is determined to get his man, what will it take. Juve say it will take more than United will spend. Woodward says try me.

Haggling ensues. Woodward finds a good balance between convincing a reluctant seller to sell and driving a hard bargain. He throws Nani in as a sweetener and Juve finally relent, deciding that £43m plus Nani plus an option on Evra next summer represents an offer they will never get again.

The deal goes through. Our midfield woes are confined to the dustbin of history and Van Gaal makes us a force to be reckoned with again.

When you're playing Young and Valencia out wide and they score 3 in 30 and 4 in 44 respectively they are not strikers, you're playing a 451 (4231 in this instance).

When you're Barca and you're playing Sanchez and Pedro out wide and they score 15 in 21 and 19 in 54 respectively they are strikers, you're playing a 433 (possibly 4213).

But surely contacting the selling club, which seems to be the case here, surely indicates that they wish to buy the player.

Adebesi - The scenario above is pretty much the one I have been envisioning as of late.
I think it is ON.

I thought I've stumbled onto RAWK by mistake.

Perfect and exactly how I see it. Except Evra goes this year.

I am at the stage where I'd be genuinely disappointed if we didn't get both Vidal and Di Maria. We need this level of player badly.

Vidal-Herrera as the 2 CM's in a 4-2-3-1 like Germany used to play with Khedira and Schweinsteiger free to get forward both, and other times, Vidal-Herrera in front of Carrick so we have a holder in midfield.

We should have signed him when he was at Leverkusen. No chance now, don't see why Juventus will sell him over Pogba who'll leave anyway and will fetch a much larger fee If they sell him this summer.

Unless we bid something like £50m upwards it's pointless you feel. I hope Woodward is working on more realistic, non-Fellainistic fall-backs!

I can't help but feel the media are leading everyone a bit of a merry dance with this one. A lot like the Sneijder 'saga' which I found hard to believe.

I think the media sees the response on twitter and forums whenever they link us to Vidal and decide to run with it. Their hit rates must be through the roof.

The thing is, if we are not in for him, I'm sure there would have been some briefing to say we aint by now. Similar to the Fabregas and Kroos stories.

lol i like the idea of this word been coming used in popular culture to mean a bad fall back plan lol, as in : "i went with her but she was a bit of a Fellainistic choice, as i wanted to go with another lass"

but generally i agree with your opinion

ow your on risky ground with this one, i said this earlyer and got lynched

Not to mention the club would have said he was not for sale... or the player would say he didnt want to leave.
All signs are pointing towards either Vidal or Pogba leaving and I think it will be Vidal.

Juventus arent stupid, they will never get as much as we are offering for Vidal... 50M or 40M + Nani, it is a crazy amount of money few clubs can match.

where have i said where not in for any players? course i think weve got targets.

I just think newspapers are printing storys about vidal and man united becuase united have a massive fan base that want to hear where in for vidal, like last summer fans wanted to hear we where signing ronaldo back, so papers/websites report it, becuase they know it is guaranteed revenue.

you just have to read some of these articles to see thier designed to grab headlines and thats it. like the express one 2days ago, said we had agreed a fee, then in small print underneath where considering bidding, or the MEN one yesterday, saying we where in for him, but then in little writing had made no approach to juventus......... they are doing the number one rule of media, give the people what they want and who cares if it true.

so sorry if you don't get why people are not believing badly written obviously nonsense stories.
I don't mean to be a grammar Nazi, but this really is ridiculous. I didn't even highlight the lack of capital letters or punctuation.

just can't get me head round gramma, it might be dysleixa it might be im just thick.... my brain just won't compute it... sorry.

No, as a compromise he should leave next summer. We should not let them have 2 players in one summer. Especially as Evra plays in a position where his competition is still only 18 and needs guidance no matter how good he might be.

No, they're just terrible.

Come on Woody. Get it done. I want to wake up in the morning. Check twitter and see this deal has been done. I will instantly cancel my 5am babestation w@nk and become semi aroused over the thought of Arturo and Ander doing the Biz next season
