Arturo Vidal

I am moving towards the stage on a daily basis where I am caring less and less whether Vidal joins us. I mean, he is a great player and the ideal signing for me - but I can't convince myself to believe that everything would then be okay if he were added.

I would put more money on us continuing to be shit for a good while even if we bought Vidal than I would on us becoming very good again.

We would then have at least one of the best first XIs in the league. However, while I know it is very early days, LVG looks no less clueless than Moyes right now, and if we continue this formation and playing players based on names and not plan - I don't see any imminent improvement regardless of who we sign.

The benefit of having Vidal is that he's played 3-5-2 at Juve, that's the standard formation. He's also a leader on the pitch, someone who will take responsibility and bollock players when required. I actually think he'd help LvG significantly.

In reality, don't we need a Vidal and a Carvalho?

As I understand it, Van Gaal likes to play with a midfield three, consisting of:

1. A defensive midfielder / destroyer
2. A box to box mid
3. A creative / attacking mid

Carvalho comes into category 1 whilst Vidal is category 2.

If we could get both this would give us:

1. Carvalho / Fletcher / Jones (?)
2. Vidal / Herrera
3. Herrera / Mata / Januzaj

Carrick could cover any of the roles, although none of them perfectly.

No because in that system Mata would be the teams number 10, and Rooney can play that role as well.

Di Maria is best as used as a midfielder as well, obviously he can play on the wings but he was exceptional as part of a midfield three and considering the fee we paid for him he should be used that way. If that's the case we would have Carvalho, Di Maria, Vidal, Mata, Herrera.. And some are suggesting Stootman on top of that.

Metro seem as sure as ever that this is on, but i guess I shouldn't be giving them the time of day really.
I don't think he'd be the end of our woes. But with him and the other recent signings we could comfortably play a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation and actually have an intimidating line-up. One thing that's been said over and over by pundits is that when you're in the opposing team's dressing room and you see United's team sheet, it just isn't scary any more. You can see we have talent up front, but there's an obvious lack of it almost everywhere else. But now we have Di Maria that's changed, and sticking Vidal in there is another name that would get oppositions shifting in their seats a little. I think if we were to get this guy, our other signings become available and swap to a more positive formation we'd see a huge change.

Latest pm from my itk newbie... I'm not sure where the meerkat comes into it, but no 2 is a pretty serious allegation:

1 Vidal - Juventu prohibits interviews (not answer questions mercat) for 2 days.
2 Agnelli and Marotta are today in Monaco. Fixed match with Monaco and real (Perez)
3 Guarin does not replace vidal. Guarin has also offered by russia

A Carvalho/Vidal double signing would take us to another level.

Rafael is almost pointless in these line ups, he's never fit.

I guess.

But feck a 3-5-2 anyway.

I actually think that would be our best team, if we didn't get Vidal then Januzaj taking his place (I think I'd actually prefer that and to get a top class CB instead of Jones and a replacement for Rafa who's constantly injured with the Vidal money instead, controversial I know).

We need to stick with it imo. The problem we have is our midfield options, not the formation.

I disagree. Not with the notion that our midfield options are poor, but I also feel that the formation is weakening us both offensively and defensively.

The team is crying out for pace and penetration up top, and we have none without Welbeck in the team.

The back 5 seems more of a back 3 more often than not too, with our centre-halves basically at full-back.

People talk about Madrid not picking players based on trying to fit a team and simply being pre-occupied with names, but I think our insistence on playing Rooney/Mata/Persie is hurting us. We need a formation that allows us a direct threat in attack.

I really hope Falcao moves to Madrid today. So that will be their non eu players covered.

If Alonso leaves, Vidal is the only decent CM left on the market. The only thing that gives me hope however is that he's a bit too old for Real.
Dont know they signed Alonso when he was 27/28 in 2009.

But that never happens. We always have injuries annoyingly.

Love the positivity, I'm not gonna make a mock line up and remove players based on their injury record. May as well leave Vidal out too cause he has a sore knee.

Making a formation with Young and Valencia and we'll be closer to the truth.

Please don't try and drag me down. I'm in a good mood football wise today. I'd like it to stay that way.

I like 3-5-2 myself. It fits with our passing game, the problem is that our players aren't comfortable with it and we don't have a central midfield capable of playing it well. I also don't think we'll persist with playing Rooney/RvP week after week. Although we might have too if we sell Welbeck and Hernandez.

Anyway, this is a different topic! :)

We gave Valencia a new contract, Fellaini is too costly to sell... I'm sorry but :(

To think in just a few days this will all be over and we can properly get on with our season. We can all take a well deserved four month break from this forum and concentrate on football.

Gon be good.

They've been signing young talent for ages now. Which is a decent policy because they know when they get bored of them in 2/3 years they can sell them on for a decent price still.
Well Falcao is not exactly a teenager and seems they want him.

That's 5 years ago mate! :p

That's true, but they might temper that approach for somebody like Vidal.

What do they have to do with signing 2 cm's anyway. Valencia and Fellaini should be kept for backup. Sell Hernandez, Cleverley, Ando, Kagawa (for his sake). Free up funds and wages.

Hoping Vidal is secretly sorted at €50m and we've agreed to delay the announcement to allow Juve time to go in for Guarin or Rabiot for realistic money before the selling clubs get wind that they're recently minted. Player and manager both making positive noises and the club have always said €50m is the bottom line … so we should just pay it and move on to bringing Verane in!

PS: First post here in the mains and I thought 201 pages for this thread in the Newbs was crazy

Real Madrid rumoured to be after Vidal.

Maybe he is thinking I can play and train with Modric, Kroos and Rodriquez in Madrid or play and train with TC23, Fellaini, Fletcher and Anderson in Manchester.

We're just clear of the half way point.

Think this is a sign that we're backing out of the deal as British media have stated. He is not fit yet after 2 and a half months from the end of the world cup it is extremely risky to bring him in.

They can't really drop Modric, Kroos, Ronaldo or Bale. Signing Vidal would mean dropping Rodriguez who they spent £60m+ on or dropping Benzema and playing without a recognised striker. Not sure I see him going there to be honest. Think they may try spending on Falcao instead..

Welcome.

I'd say that's unlikely. That rumour has been going since early summer but there's no way we'd let it run this long. We're either not after him or we're delaying either to assess his fitness or try to get a better deal. If it's the latter I suspect that we've both misjudged the situation and shot ourselves in the foot with our results which I make it apparent how desperate we are. I really can't see us being able to put together a deal like this one in the time that's left, even if he is fit.
