Arturo Vidal

As much as I rate Vidal I can't help feeling we'd still lack balance even if we signed him. Assuming he plays in midfield three with Mata and Herrera none of them like to sit back and defend and perform better offensively. I could live with that because both Herrera and Vidal do some defensive work but I reckon someone slightly more defending, even significantly less talented than Vidal, would work better for us at the minute. Ideally we'd sign both Vidal and De Jong and adjust our formation to the opposition, all of a sudden we'd have one of the best midfields in the world.

I have thought the same thing ever since the saga began. A Matic type of player would be my ideal signing. Kind of why I hope we are in for Willian Calvalho if this doesnt materialise.

No. Mata is an important source of goals and assists for us. I would sooner get rid of Kagawa and our glut of strikers who just aren't up to it. Mata is too important a player to the way we want to play.

Thankfully we don't have to start everyone every week. If you want to compete with the best, you have to have a squad that forces you to put amazing players on the bench.

Except we have no champions league and as of last night...no league cup football

If we get to the FA cup final (and that of course is a massive 'if'), then we'll play a maximum of 44 games this season. You don't need a huge squad for that, you need a consistent team playing week in week out.

the first on the left with rvp instead of rooney

I prefer the last.
I like keeping the wingers high up the pitch for fast counters.
I mostly just want a serious midfield again though as i haven't seen us with one in ages.

Why are we talking about shifting quality like Mata? That is a no no. We should be shifting the dead weight that made it clear last night they don't want to be here.

Hargreaves' injury was tendonitis though, isn't Vidal only a torn meniscus? That's a fairly common knee injury and one of the easiest to fix and heal.
Tendonitis wasn't Hargreaves injury originally. It was brought on by his injury. Part of the concern with Vidal is that tendonitis is more likely to crop up if an injury wasn't properly healed.

Yeah i have read other people say its not a bad injury Vidal has and is quite common. Imo we are just using the knee as a bargaining tool, if we don't end up signing him then i am wrong but i expect us to get him before the deadline, well if we really ARE in for him that is.
It's not the seriousness of Vidal's injury that's the concern, it's the fact that he came back too soon. Think of it this way: Typically, that type of surgery would see an athlete return in 6-8 weeks. His surgery was 16 weeks ago, and he only just played his first game for Juventus a few days ago.

Of course he played in the World Cup in that time, and that's the problem. He played in a friendly 4 weeks after surgery, and played in the World Cup 5 weeks after surgery, needing injections to play at all. He never made it 90 minutes in the World Cup, not even against Brazil, despite being their best penalty taker. There can be no question that, in the very best case scenario, he delayed his full recovery by playing too soon for Chile. The questions are whether he did further damage to it, and if so, how much more damage he did.

I do agree that it's a bargaining chip, regardless. I think that we still want him, but the concerns over the injury mean that we value him less than what Juve may be asking for.

You don't need one, but barely much wrong in having one.
So we'll be shelling out cash and wages on players we might not need, but as a supporter, I'm fine with that!
I'd rather have more than we need than less than we need.
And in due time, if we make the top 4, we'll have a huge amount of games next season to play...

And if players are good enough to start, they'll start. If they're not, they'll be on the bench.
If they're unhappy, there's the door....

If we played 4231 that would benefit mata is well, signing him defeats the purpose of needing to play 2 strikers anyway. He could easily out score Rooney, which we some how give him a new contract and made him captain

God, I wish I could believe this one is going to happen. Right now, I'd be happy with a CMF loan...

A 33 years old Franco Baresi played the final of the WC 94 one month after his surgery (the same as Vidal)

he went to play over 90 games for Milan in the next 3 years.

i wouldn't be too concerned about Vidal fitness. He is more Cylon than human.

In that case, perhaps Rooney, Mata, RVP etc. can spend their turns on the bench thinking about how they could be playing more football if they actually did a better job the previous season. Harsh, but true.

Hypothetical question...

Would you give up Mata if that's what was needed to get Vidal?

A fit Vidal? Yes, I'd give up any one of Mata, Rooney or RVP in fact.

No disrespect to them as players, they're all brilliant and I'm a fan of each of them, but having the three of them seems to cause more problems with the odd need to shoe-horn all three of them into any given starting line-up.

In the event that Vidal doesn’t come and we do not have a plan B, would Rojo work in the role of DM? From what I have seen of him in the WC, he has the aggression and the pace to cover the ground, but does he have the skill set to pull it off? Anyone reckon the formation below will get overrun easily?

DDG
Rafael Jones Smalling Shaw
Rojo
Carrick Herrera
Januzaj Di Maria
RVP or Rooney

............Herrera......Fletcher
.......Januzaj......Mata.........Di Maria
.......................RVP

Like that?

I'd rather Jones play DM over Rojo then..

Weird all the lack of Rooney love. Just thinking how a proper ball-winning/distributing CMF will work wonders for Rooney. He won't have to keep dropping back for the ball.

Fark's sake..the formations dont show up properly.
Rojo in front of Jones and Smalling and behind Carick and Herrera,
with Januzaj and Di Maria on the wings.

Rojo

No Vidal? what thread are we in? oh...

Anyway, Phil Jones has been great as DM, so no Rojo there obviously.

Stop going mental with the formations please lads, this thread is for transfer speculation.

If you want to discuss possible formations start a new thread.

Any reason why? Other than the fact that we have not seen Rojo in action yet?

From the little I've seen of Rojo, I prefer the energy and drive that Jones provides and has the ability to provide over Rojo in that position..
Having said that, Rojo might be more composed and a better reader of the game...

It's not official is it? I read there were "strong reports" coming out of Spain.. Would be rather strange if they'd sold both Di Maria and Alonso in the same transfer window.

Makes sense considering Khedira now says he's staying there. Alonso can have a nice few retirement seasons pinging the ball around for Bayern under no pressure.

Apparently. Don't think it's a done deal yet. But yeah Vidal could be Madrid bound if Alonso does go. Or does that explain why Khedira stayed?

Have a feeling they are paving the way for Pogba to take his place maybe next summer?

Alonzo would be a cool signing for us, maybe too similar for Carrick but better than what we have got

I honestly don't know what they are up to. The minute the Alonso story broke on Twatter it has gone crazy with Vidal to Real Madrid tweets. I must admit the first thing I though was "oh no" hence the anchorman clip. BUT! the Pogba theory might also carry some weight. Personally, I don't believe all the stories about Vidal agreeing personal terms with United as I can't find a single source that isn't quoting The Express. I'm really worried now.

Should have signed him many years ago, will be 33 soon. Not someone for the future exactly, still very good though.

We never really needed to sign Alonzo, when we signed Carrick, but for what we may need if Madrid are looking to offload him I would snap him up in a heart Beat. We have no idea if Carrick is going too get going when he returns, he's fit he will not cost much, I say give it a shot if we cannot get Vidal.

God could you imagine this place if Madrid bought Vidal then Vidal released a statement saying something like "I agreed terms with Manchester utd weeks ago and was all set to go there but they never put a final bid in and stalled on the transfer, Madrid then came in for me and it would be impossible to turn down a club like madrid, especially when they moved so quickly and showed me how much they really wanted me".:nervous:
