Arturo Vidal

Vidal is not a holding midfielder though, but a midfield trio of Vidal, Herrera and Di Maria would be ridiculously energetic and defensively adept. But we'd still have crap wings, and since I don't see us playing with a diamond I think Di Maria would be shifted wide with Carrick as a holding midfielder.

He could play that role but we wont have to necessarily. The energy of that trio would be epic. If we get Vidal then Carrick wont see much playing time

This is such a confusing saga all this time Italian/Chilean news outlets have been going on and on about how we're in for him yet now when English journos are reporting our interest his agent comes out to say there hasnt been contact since the World Cup. None of this makes any sense frankly.

If we are interested then negotiations of some capacity must be ongoing perhaps its between us and Juventus trying to agree a fee or perhaps its Juventus trying to secure a signing to ease the blow of Vidal leaving. If we arent negotiating then it means that we're not interested which is difficult to believe but there are only a few days left in the window which will make the deal even more difficult.

Would you swap Mata and ADM then?

I dont think i'd play rooney and rvp. Just not convinced by the partnership. Dont know about mata.
Really dont think vidal and hererra with him would work. Di maria might but hes harder working.
I'd want di maria providing width though. Maybe throw januzaj on the other wing with rooney or maybe mata as cover.
Have a midfield 3 with carrick, vidal and hererra.

I really dont know though, none of our players are making a great case for themselves to be first choice going forward.
Probably about a dozen formations and selections which could work

I honestly cant see LvG dropping Rooney or RVP. He will have to play 4-3-3 or stick to the 3 at the back everyone hates

As much as I rate Vidal I can't help feeling we'd still lack balance even if we signed him. Assuming he plays in midfield three with Mata and Herrera none of them like to sit back and defend and perform better offensively. I could live with that because both Herrera and Vidal do some defensive work but I reckon someone slightly more defending, even significantly less talented than Vidal, would work better for us at the minute. Ideally we'd sign both Vidal and De Jong and adjust our formation to the opposition, all of a sudden we'd have one of the best midfields in the world.

If we're playing a midfield 3 of Herrera, Vidal and Carrick, I'm sure he'll see playing time! I can see that being a solid, dynamic and creative midfield 3!

Especially if we play 4-3-3

LVG stated a while ago that if he wants to switch to his preferred 433 we will have to get a wide man.
I think 433 is going to be our primary formation moving forward.

Precisely, and we have 2 wide men now..

a midfield 3 of Carrick, Herrera and Vidal...with Di Maria and Adnan out wide...
Rooney or RVP upfront..
Mata will get plenty of game time too if either of Herrera or Vidal want to be rested/dropped, or when we play 3-5-2...

Got to love twatter at times. Although Sky Italia now reporting that Vidals agent is denying any contact has been made, let alone a bid or deal being agreed.

Express is the worst paper in the world.
Strangely enough I didn't write it, just posted it.

If the express is on a blacklist then I apologise, but if not then this is the Vidal thread in the transfer forum, therefore I assume it to be in the right place.

Kind of off topic but could mata play as a wing forward?

I hope so but I still reckon we are a bit on the short of quality side when it comes to wingers. Young and Valencia have no quality whatsoever, Januzaj is good but still very young. Di Maria stands out obviously, hopefully Januzaj will progress further while at least one of the other two won't have a completely shit on stick season.

With 4 at the back maybe we won't be in for another central defender? Jones, Evans, Smalling, Blacket, Rojo, keane. Not commanding but the numbers are there

All guns blazing for a CM

That rapper had tweeted the same thing a month or so back...

It's the right place to post such stuff, but the express is indeed the worst paper in the world, so don't be shocked if it's called as much.

Crazy the amount of options we've got when everyone's fit, even without Vidal. Fitting Carrick, Herrera, Di Maria, Mata, Januzaj, Vidal, Rooney and RVP into 6 positions. Can see why Welbeck may have been told he should consider leaving.

Thats why I really wanted us to sign Benatia...he would have shored up our defense and could have formed an amazing partnership with Rojo... now it has to be Rojo/Evans which doesnt sound terrible but Evans needs to seriously step the feck up because he is the senior CB and Rojo will take time getting up to speed.

Should Vidal come in, along with our other players and a fully fit squad, how would/should we line up in your opinion and how would LVG do it?

Injuries are in fact our biggest problem. Fully fit we have a pretty decent squad, a lot if players don't fit LVG system and it's showing many of them up

It's amazing how much better the team looks with an attacking layer with pace like Di Maria. You actually know there is someone there who can flick a switch and be off like grease lightening.

IF a deal for Vidal comes off that will be a much stronger place to build from for the rest of the season. My only concern is some of the dross that's behind that first eleven if we lose a key player for a couple of weeks.

I'd go 4-3-3 not going to bother naming the players as they will pick themselves

How many posts does the Vidal megathread in the newbies have? And on average how many new Vidal threads pop up everyday?

Yeah Evans looked awful last night but was his first game back in how long? I'd like to see him in the middle of Rojo and Jones if we stay at 3-5-2

With the formations diarrhea which we are seeing lately, I think many believe that if you draw a formation on drawing board, pick certain players and if it looks good on drawing board, it works on field. Unless team will practice in certain formation and in certain way regularly, they won't be able to achieve the chemistry during matches.

I think we are moving to 433 and its going to be Rafael-Evans-Rojo-Shaw...which is not bad, its just that I think Evans would really need to up his game.

the first on the left with rvp instead of rooney

Hypothetical question...

Would you give up Mata if that's what was needed to get Vidal?

If the option of a straight swap came up, i would swap him.As good as Mata is, he was never a player we were crying out for, than again if they wanted RVP or Rooney, i would not be dead against it.

If we had a midfield of Vidal, Herrera and Di Maria, the flexibility would be vast. All can play box-to box, no 10, cover the full backs, provide width. Herrra and Vidal could operate in a deep lying position.
