Arturo Vidal

If this happens, a midfield duo of Vidal and Herrera will be some force to be reckoned with. Very nicely balanced. Both have great engines and are genuine box to box players. Depending on who and where we are playing, they can either have Carrick put behind them with more license to attack, or Mata in front of them with more defensive responsibilities. This is assuming a front three of Rooney, RVP and ADM. My word, that's mouth watering. And then we have Januzaj and Welbeck to rotate in, with Wilson on the horizon.

This is a tough time for us, but our left hand side is likely to be Shaw and Di Maria over the coming few years. Probably only bettered by Marcelo/Ronaldo and Alaba/Robben in world football.

If this signing comes off, the only areas of our team that are a worry are right back, because Rafael's development has stalled due to all his injuries, and centre back. There's a lot of talent at centre back. I still think Jones can turn into a world class centre half. People remember all the hype when he came through. He's moved around a lot since and gained some much needed experience elsewhere on the field, especially midfield, which will only make him a better ball carrier. Centre backs tend to develop much later, as a rule, and Jones is only 22. I think this lad will become and absolute Titan. Smalling is a natural defender and probably our best centre back right now, he just isn't great on the ball at all. He really needs to improve that aspect of his game considerably. Evans is the other way around for me. He's great on the ball but I still think he lacks the qualities that make a world class centre half. Useful player no doubt though. Rojo? We'll see. Work in progress I suspect.

I'll be surprised if we buy another center half this window. I can only imagine we'll switch to 4-3-3 or a variation of, if we buy Vidal. And that would leave us with Jones, Evans, Rojo and Smalling for two positions. Not counting Keane and Blackett, who are both good enough to play for the first team IMO.

If anything, I'd imagine we'd buy a right back to cover/replace Rafael. I love Rafa, he's brilliant, but these constant injuries are so frustrating and he's rarely at top form because he struggles to put a decent run of games together.

Come on Woody, get us Vidal.

Di Maria will single handedly win you games when every other player on the pitch is playing shite. No disrespect to Vidal, but I just don't think he's got the skillset to start from the deep position he will have to be played in to accommodate Herrera and win us a game. RVP is testament to the fact a top, top player will still win you games even with a Carrick - Cleverley midfield partnership.

 Don't make me laugh. Vidal is a better player than Di Maria imo and would have a much bigger impact on our team considering the black hole we have in the CM area. Vidal is a match winner as well and is arguably the best midfielder in the world, and you don't think he has the skill set to accommodate Herrera? Are you on drugs?

As for his skill set for a particular position, I hope you realise he has played CB, CM, CDM and CAM throughout his career and has looked pretty good. If anything Herrera should adapt his game to accommodate Vidal.

If a Schweinstieger/Martinez partnership dominated the scene, then I doubt Vidal/Herrera would be much of a problem. One of them might have to make a few changes to their game though. I think Herrera can be converted into a brilliant CDM eventually, He has good energy, likes to tackle and can easily pick out a pass. His awareness looks pretty good as well, I just think he needs to time his challenges better though.

Why not? Last season we managed with 5 CB's and still had to play Carrick their occasionally due to all of them being made of glass. We've had Jones/Smalling/Evas/Rio/Vidic as our CB's for the last 3/4 years, So I'm sure we have room for at least 1 top quality centre half.

Although you're right, if we intent to promote Blackett and Keane it would seem like way to much.

Can someone give me the cliffnotes on the vidal situation after LvG namechecked him?

Who has been reporting that we're in for him again? Cliffs please, cliffs!

We don't have Champions league football so players won't get injured as much and we won't rotate as much. You can comfortably have a squad of like 6 players smaller without the champions league added in to the fixture list.

Few reports saying our interest in him is back again but we're concerned about his knee.

There remains a possibility of a move for Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, but with ongoing concerns over the Chile international’s recovery from a pre-World Cup knee injury, Van Gaal may instead wait to assess the fitness of Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman before considering a January move for the Dutchman, who has been sidelined with a cruciate ligament injury since March.

The Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal is Manchester United’s top midfield target but the club’s concerns about his fitness are so great that it may require a complex, appearance-based contract if he is to follow Angel Di Maria into Louis van Gaal’s squad, taking the two-year transfer spend at Old Trafford crashing through the £200m barrier.

But the player’s troublesome right knee is a cause of serious concern, with United acutely aware that the 27-year-old has not started a Serie A game for the Turin side since the 2-0 defeat at Napoli on 30 March – and that he was subsequently asked to play four times, late last season, before the knee was operated on. Juventus needed Vidal as they fought to win last season’s title and to progress in the Europa League.

The player underwent a rapid operation in May to repair his meniscus before the World Cup and was obviously never fully fit in Brazil, where he could not complete any of the three games he played. Universidad de Chile’s team doctor, Alejandro Orizola, described the operation that patched him up for the World Cup as “a hasty procedure” and claimed that “it would always bring with it a regression in his final recovery”.

The substantial concerns about the injury could feasibly lead United to seek a highly incentivised appearance-based contract of the type Michael Owen signed when joining United in 2011. It seems unlikely that United would be willing to pay anywhere near the €40m (£31.8m) asking price for a player who represents such a physical risk.

Despite the doubts, Vidal was name-checked twice by Van Gaal in his post-match press conference at Sunderland – which seemed significant. United would certainly want to put him through the most vigorous medical at their Carrington training facility – which is equipped with the technology to predict the likelihood of a player breaking down.

Manchester United will turn their attention to finally signing Arturo Vidal from Juventus, sources in England and Italy have stated, after just agreeing a fee with Real Madrid to acquire Angel Di Maria.

The club's mooted interest in Vidal has been a long-running theme of the summer, despite Old Trafford officials regularly briefing that the speculation only came from the player's camp.

Sources have repeatedly stated that United's interest was very real, however, and it now appears that they will finally act on that as the club's need for a midfielder becomes so pressing.

For his part, Vidal is also hugely interested in moving to Old Trafford, and discussions between representatives have already covered the idea of an incentivised contract because of his knee situation.

ESPN had previously been told by sources that Juventus set United a price of 45 million pounds in June. The Italian champions have been hugely wary of the public image the exit of such a player would create, especially after the departure of title-winning coach Antonio Conte in what has been a fractious close season.

Thanks bro!

Sounds like a little bit of guesswork by journalists. I don't think we'll sign Vidal now after Di Maria. If we did though, I would go streaking and be the most ecstatic kid on the block!

He's exactly what we need.

Imagine Vidal, Herrera, Di Maria, Mata and Januzaj all on the pitch at the same time...

It has to be said, Vidal's knee is going to play right into Ed Woodward's lowball/hardball strategy that has failed so many times before (aside from his backup plan where he just hands over a blank check).

I reckon between Vidal's knee and dangling Chicharito, we may yet wind up with Vidal. Agent CR7 helped us with Di Maria, now we need a hand from Paddy.

It's the £40m gamble. Can Juventus afford to say no to £40m for a player with a dodgy knee who's value is only going to decrease?

Probably also depends a lot on what Vidal himself wants.

Judging by how he flirted with United and refused to commit himself to Juventus time and time again, esp his last quote of my future is to train well, it would be fair to infer that he is interested in the move.

That is quite the team, however I would love to see a 4-3-1-2, Ac Milan style with a midfield trio of Herrera, Vidal, Di Maria with a forward line of Mata, Rooney and RVP. I know there is not holding mid there but it would be an interesting prospect.
EDIT: More of attempt to shoehorn our potential best players but I can't see LVG not trying it as fitting our best players in a formation has proved to be quite the conundrum to deal with. If it doesn't work, then some will just have to make do with a spot on the bench.

So long as he doesn't talk to Tevez

Could it not be more of the case that they've been briefed? 3 journo's all saying the same is bloody good guesswork imo, unless they're nabbing the story off each other!

Hernandez + Fellaini + Anderson + Cleverley + £20m to keep things fair? We should pay them £5m for taking Anderson.

Cash: £20m
Hernandez: £15m
Fellaini: £12m
Cleverley: £5m
Anderson: £-5m
Total: £47m.

"I'm not going to Manchester"

:annoyed:

That is what he is quoted as saying in the video, and yet the whole article is about how we are going after him now and he is interested.

I am so lost in this transfer :(.

That is an old video and he never really said I am not going to Manchester. He sheepishly said 'No no' whilst awkwardly giggling when he was being hustled by a journalist at the airport for a quote. You need to watch the video to get better context, its in Italian but has already been translated in this thread quite some time ago.

I noticed this in one of the articles:

United would certainly want to put him through the most vigorous medical at their Carrington training facility – which is equipped with the technology to predict the likelihood of a player breaking down.

The likelihood with our players seems to be around 100%.

Thanks for that... do not know how I missed it in this short concise focused thread ;).

Rojo wont displace a fully fit Evans. I reckon if we go 4 at the back it'll be Jones and Evans.

Worth remembering that Van Gaal, even in a four men defence, likes a left footed centre back. If we get Vidal I think Herrera will suffer once Carrick returns because a Carrick - Vidal midfield combo is much more solid both with and without the ball.

It might be the post-Di-Maria euphoria talking, but I'm not starting to believe we might also wrap-up a deal for Vidal this week.

The next few days could define the next few years. Make it happen!

I'll go with 30 games a season.

Have a look at his average appearances since 2008/2009. it might surprise you
Yeah, I was obviously exaggerating. 30 might be a stretch though, given his lack of pre-season and that. It would be great though, he is our best defender, although I haven't really seen enough of Rojo as a CB to know if he can be better than him.
