James Ducker:

From insisting all summer that they were not interested in signing Arturo Vidal, United’s stance appears to have softened with the club interested but concerned about the effects of a knee injury the Juventus and Chile midfielder suffered before the World Cup.

Seems that United have been briefing the press.

With a week left of the transfer window you'd really hope we have alternatives lined up. Also couldn't our doctors assess his knee in a medical?

Ideally watching him play a 2-3 competitive games would give a much much clearer idea. Shame that the Italian league only kicks of this weekend.

A medical isn't going to give you any kind of an accurate prediction of future risk of recurrent problems with his knee. Hargreaves being an obvious example.

It's a crude tool for a long term prognosis. Good at picking up previously un-diagnosed medical conditions (cf. Remy or Kanu, with their abnormal ECGs) but kind of crap when it comes to making predictions about the state of someone's joints.

What was the issue Ruud had that caused us to call off that transfer for a season, we picked that up after some sort of medical.

Is there any top quality players available that could play as a number 6?

I think he just broke a leg the season we were going to sign him, so we waited a year. This could be wrong, just going on the info inside my head!

What about the example of RVN? We clearly saw an issue there, would be similar in the case of Vidal if something is already obvious. Although as you said, no chance of picking up something there is no evidence of yet.

Van Nistelrooy looked set to complete a club record £18.5 million transfer to Manchester United in the summer of 2000.[4] He was to be unveiled at a press conference four days later, but this was instead used to announce that the transfer had been postponed over concerns about his fitness, having not played for a month due to problems with his knee.[5] The transfer was then cancelled after PSV refused to agree to further medical tests,[6][7] and the next day he suffered ruptured his anterior cruciate knee ligaments during a training session, leaving him injured for a year.[8][9]

That was similar but instead of relying on the findings of a standard medical, we actually wanted him to play a match.

PSV refused and the rest is history.

This on top of Di Maria would be incredible.

Can't see it getting done, but it would put Woody in the safe zone for years.

Yeh thanks for that. Guess the medical team sussed that one out!

Di Maria will single handedly win you games when every other player on the pitch is playing shite. No disrespect to Vidal, but I just don't think he's got the skillset to start from the deep position he will have to be played in to accommodate Herrera and win us a game. RVP is testament to the fact a top, top player will still win you games even with a Carrick - Cleverley midfield partnership.

Everyone is talkjng like this is a vidal v di maria battle whos better. Simple fact is di maria is a United player, having vidal in there beside him would complement him hugely. I hope it happens but Im not holding my breath.

The big question, obviously, is have we messed up by not saving him an appropriate squad number.

Successful knows how important this could be.

We either go hard for him, or we go for Plan B/Plan C.

This is the type of thing that will take a few days, given how much Juve have denied the idea of selling Vidal. They can't exactly suddenly make an u-turn in a day and say "OK, we're selling him".

Less than a week now. Big decisions.

Successful has suggested Di Maria should get 9. So maybe the genius is onto something by saving number 7.

To all of those carrying on about 'there's no way we're blowing another 45m after signing AdM' etc, tell me did you think BEFORE this window started that we'd spend 132m in one window? Yeah, I didn't think so, so stop saying 'it won't happen because we won't spend more than x amount' since its clear we're on a mission to spend what's needed for the manager to take us forward. For christ sakes, we've spent 200m in just under a year without any major transfer fees received for outgoing players. If Vidal's available, and he wants to come here, and Juve are open to selling, and his knees are fine then we will sign him. Whether that be for 25m or 30m or 60m, we will sign him. Money's not the issue here.

From Ian Herbert:

The substantial concerns about the injury could feasibly lead United to seek a highly incentivised appearance-based contract of the type Michael Owen signed when joining United in 2011.

This might ease United's fear about his knee but I wonder if Vidal will be happy with a contract like this.

It seems like club had decided to risk and go with this signing, hopefully everything goes well.

We all feel like that young boy who in 1996, aged 11 fantasized for months about getting a Sony Playstation for christmas. Every day we would rush home from school and stare at the photo of this lovely, grey, communist looking machine in the Gratton catalogue.
Every friend we had, owned a Playstation and would be in awe of its capabilities. We felt left out in conversations that took place at school. Outsiders. Outcasts, but full of hope, that our hardworking parents would go all out this year and get us the present we desire the most.
We didn't sleep on Christmas eve, the feeling of pure excitment rumbling around our tummies put pay to any chance of closing our eyes.
At 6 o'clock on Christmas morning, we dont run down the stairs, we f"cking leap the whole case. We rush to the xmas tree and grab our main present, which in no way shape or form resembles a Playstation box. The size is wrong, The weight is wrong. It actually feels like My mam has actually wrapped an actual piece of fruit as an xmas present. The world comes crashing down. The feeling of hope is replaced with anger and despare in the blink of an eye.
A tear falls down our cheek.
And when we finally calm down, we remember that theres always next year, hope begins to rebuild until the realisation sets in that we still have the same stingy parents.

So yeah.. thats how my mood right now anyway.

I thought it was off for a while but it appears that we are on pole position to get him...well done to the club for making things happen

I want him as much as the next guy but I'm struggling to see where all of the positivity is coming from all of a sudden.

Having watched the nightmare pairing of Fletcher and Cleverley, I'm struggling to believe LVG would pass on Vidal if he were available.

Yes but whilst that may be true, the notion that we have infinite funds is just not true. I'd love Vidal here and if he were available and his knee wasn't a significant hinderance, I'd be stunned if we didn't pick him up as a priority over Di Maria. But, my gut tells me the knee is proving to be an issue and that Vidal may not be as available as everyone assumes.

On top of that, as I mentioned, I can't see the club funding another what would be 40m transfer.

Why not? We were happy to overspend for Herrera, Rojo and now Di Maria. I think the club realises that if it wants to return to the ascendancy quickly, then it needs to splash the cash. Its not like we're cash strapped either.
