Dreaming of a midfielder... Anyone would do nicely, I cant ber another game of the Fletch and Clev combo.

He still has a role to play, he's not finished. Buy his successor is more apt. The role he plays means he can play well into his late 30s and still be an important player for us like Scholes became.

No player should be playing regularly at this club beyond the age of 35. Manchester Milan has proven this to be true.

Yes they did well getting rid of Pirlo

That doesn't negate my wider point in the slightest.

Whilst you can't have a team full of oldies (Milan) to say NO player should continue is going a step too far, some exceptional players can still do a very good job (not that I think we have any in our squad at the moment tbh)

Scholes on his return showed that, plus Giggs was a very good player for us +35 too.

I think Scholes' return was a terrible call. Giggs should have joined him on a beach the summer Paul originally retired. Never, ever can we allow what has happened to our squad over the past few seasons to happen again. We needed to be ruthless, replace, and invest in younger players, whether that be an expensive import or an academy product. We did neither, we just watched 37 year olds stink out a two man midfield. If Carrick is still starting games for this club at 35 then we'll have something to worry about, I can assure you.

I agree we didn't invest but IMO it wasn't Scholes that season who was the issue (or you don't recall his performances) or Giggs for his cameos. The players stinking out our CM last season are still the same ones stinking it out this season.

Granted we should have played Pogba more maybe with Scholes in that run in, but Fergie didn't think he was ready (fair enough, was a bad call)

Fletcher, Cleverly, Anderson et al should all be shipped out before Carrick. I don't expect Carrick to be playing post 35 anyway but those players mentioned need to go before he does IMO.

I prefer Paisley's way: Replace your players while they are still good. "let them lose their legs on someone else's pitch."

Rodgers should be planning similar with Gerrard as well.

Giggs wasn't really dishing out cameos. Almost every game he'd start in a two man midfield we would lose, and he started there fairly often. Scholes was done when he first retired and other than a few good games, of which he was obviously still capable of, was exactly the same after the first couple of months of his return. His final season was abysmal, hence he had that 'knee injury' for months on end, only to rock up again once we had won the league.

I take your point about the others, but I can't really blame Cleverley for not being good enough, nor can I blame Anderson for being a crock. I can't blame Fletcher for being seriously ill. But I can blame Ferguson, Scholes and Giggs for refusing to let go. But yes, I agree the others should all leave before Carrick.

If I were in charge, I'd get rid of all three of Anderson, Fellaini and Cleverley and bring in two more midfielders before the week is out. Ruthless, maybe, but the midfield still needs work, because it doesn't even consist of potential.

I've never heard of that quote before but it's bang on. As for Gerrard, I'd give him another season. I assume you'd like to think the club will actively pursue a quality replacement throughout the season, or do you like what is already there enough as it is?

You shouldn't be reliant on a player over 35. Juventus are less reliant on Pirlo for example, than we were on Scholes/Giggs providing creativity.

Henderson is Gerrards replacement methinks.

Either way signing Di Maria will help us in more ways than one. I'd say more players would be interested in joining us now we've shown what our intentions are.

I haven't given up on Vidal. But I hope we leave enough time to go for our back ups.

I think Gerrard is still more than good enough, but the end is in sight. Which is why he should be phased out now.

I am guessing they are hoping Can will be the guy to oust him. We'll see. If he drops into the Allen category of good squad player but not a profile in the team, we should be looking for the next one asap, imo.

If we did that with Scholes and Giggs we'd be a few trophies lighter.

Mark Ogden saying we're interested in Vidal muppets, this transfer may still have legs.

Vidal should be on top of our list. Di Maria is a fantastic buy but he won't succeed where the likes of Mata, Rooney, RVP, Kagawa and Januzaj has failed ie doing well while being backed but championship level players such as Fletcher and Cleverley.

Probably just a guess after LvG name dropped? Guess similar to AdM in that sense.

This one will go down to the wire. Incidentally, did Serie A start this weekend and did Vidal play?
Vidal played and looked good im not sure how long he played for but I watched the first 30 odd mins of the start of the game and was impressed considering it's his first game back.

When LVG name dropped him the first thing in my mind was he wanted to see him play a game before deciding to buy him or not. It's ArturON:cool:

I don't know whether to get back on the muppet train or not. Don't know if my heart can take it
I never got off it mate. You can see that by looking at the Vidal thread post count, I'm not even on twitter or look for for sources.

Inconceivable that we will spend another 40 surely

Or have the Glazers hit their collective heads

That's the only thing I can think of as well. We're really concerned about his recovery etc.

Chich plus 50m Euro offer.

No we wouldn't. I'd argue we'd have one more title. It was they, Park and Ferguson that lost us the league that night at the Etihad. It was Scholes that should have been substituted in the 4-4 with Everton and it was Giggs that put in one of the worst midfield performances I've ever seen in the 1-0 defeat to Wigan.

If his fully recovered and back and running I think we should do what ever it takes to get him like we have done with Di Maria, if his available just give them what they want!

If the funds are there we will. Not sure there is much left for us to spend though.
Another problem would be whether he wants to join us.
Do Maria didn't get the pay cheque he wanted at Real and also they kept buying players in his position.
Vidal is the main man at Juventus though. The thing that gives me a bit of hope is that we can give him a lot more money.
