If both Madrid & Bayern don't want Khedira then I'd say he would be a pretty good plan b.

Agreed but no sign at all that we are interested, so sad that Bayern now have first dibs over us in the transfer market, we are at the lowest point we have been at just now for such a long time.

I think it's the football equivalent of scrapping the car, in some cases you (or the player) can buy the wreck back for scrap value. However yes, if the insurers pay out it's because he can't play. If he then starts playing again, I imagine the insurers will want some (all) of the money back and the club would insist on the player or his new club offering compensation. It'll be in the small print somewhere and the player will have agreed to it at some point.

Career ending catastrophes are so rare that I doubt there are many test cases. Part of the reason for Madrid having this kind of policy could be memories of De La Red who had only been back with them for about a month when he collapsed with an (assumed) heart condition and couldn't return to play.

Imagine if that happened to your €100m asset, errrr I mean player.

It's all a question of what level the player can play at. I doubt a club would ever write a player off unless medically he has been told he won't play again to a sufficient level.

The issue is whether a player claims on his own insurance policy. If he did, and subsequently went back to a level he would t have been able to play at (and therefore able to earn more money) then he'd potentially have to pay money back.

My local side had Gordon Watson who'd had his top level career ended when at Southampton. He got paid out big could play up to League 1. Had we gone up to the Championship he'd have had to move on.

Very difficult to read what is going on right now. I don't think Vidal can do any more, he clearly wants to move to us (evidenced by his lack of public commitment to Juventus and his publicity stunts signing United shirts).

But after the hullaballoo for new signings from last weekends defeat vs Swansea, I expected the chatter on this to instantly and dramatically increase if we were going to sign him. But its gone silent (unlike Roja and Di Maria where internet noise can be easily heard).

Either we have gone into ultra stealth mode, or we are not interested, which I guess is kind of obvious in that we will either sign him or not sign him. But for the first time in this summer long muppet saga, Im thinking this potential transfer is dead.

:(

With Di Maria you get unmatched versatility in that he can slot into the midfield or the forward line of a 4-3-3, just about anywhere behind the striker in a 4-2-3-1. Vidal is brilliant and would be the ball winner and all round midfielder that our midfield craves but our lack of quality wingers and LVG's preference for tactically versatile player could play into Di Maria's favour.

Pay up and sign him, get rid of fletcher, fellaini, ando and and cleverly and promote ben pearson.

Mitten saying he's definitely leaving according to his sources.

While the quiet could absolutely be a sign that this is dead, it is also logical that it could still be very much a possibility. If Vidal does want to go and has let Juve know this, and if Juve are asking for something like 40m plus a couple of players, and if United are interested, but not at that price (all of those "ifs" have been reported, or at least suspected)...then it may be quiet as it's just a stand off. United made their stance known to Juve. Juve made their stance known to United. Now it's a 10 day game of chicken, to see who is going to give in first.

Vidal can be fairly versatile. He plays in Chile's forward line at times. He's not going to play on the wing (unless Moyes comes back), but he has versatility up and down the middle. I seem to remember him even playing a very deep midfield role (just slightly in front of the backline) for Chile in the past, but that may have been a situation where they were trying to hold on to a lead against a tough opponent.

I'd take him over Di Maria if it was between those 2. We've been crying out for a Roy Keane for years, and from a pure on the pitch perspective (nobody can replace Keano's leadership qualities) Vidal is the one we've been waiting for. Like Keane, he is an all around midfielder, good going forward and good in defense. We've tried signing defensive players like Fellaini, but then it became apparent he offers nothing creative in terms of passing. Similarly we've had to put Giggs or Anderson in midfield to try and get some creativity, but they couldn't really defend. That alone shows the value of having a proper midfielder.

It's ironic that the stars have aligned on this one where we face no competition meaning this time the world class player won't snub us for Madrid, Barcelona etc., and we do nothing about it.

As we have all learned from the many transfer saga's we have suffered over the years, its the 'IFs' that makes a muppet go madly insane!

I didn't see the show, sounds like Mitten seems absolute certain about this. I take it he didn't mention us as his destination?

do you have the source article of this?
He said it on Mutv, but he didn't really say that in that sense. He said there's loads of stuff being written, United denying everything, too much noise to be nothing, but no idea what is true. People who he trusts in Italy say they think he is definitely going to leave while those at United say nothing.

I still think LVG would rather have Strootman

The Vidal transfer has not even reached Fabregas levels yet, it's just all newspaper talk and 'vidal is staying' quotes from ppl answering journalist's questions.

If we do end up getting Vidal, the wave of fan optimism will be like a tsunami. It's the kind of signing that will completely eradicate negativity and that's what we desperately need at this time. A new era needs marquee signings - much as I hate the word. Vidal will lift everyone from the kit man to 'Joe' at the pub.

He's widely regarded as the most complete midfielder in the world today and there's no better fit than Manchester United.

On a side note and a little off topic, whats up with Anderson anyway? He's training separately or sthing? LVG gave up on him?

Yeah... What's the deal with him. Thought he was going to be a new signing after a good loan spell. He could be the answer to all our midfield problems. Somebody bite it....

Too much gone on to deny this is only newspaper talk.

Herrera was done on the quiet, and it seems Rojo has been going on a while too so it's not surprising that the club hasn't commented.

To me it seems the knee injury could be the issue.

This. Even more so than Di Maria and much like Özil for Arsenal last year. He would be perfect, not only a brilliant midfielder but also someone to really lift the fans and also our players imo.

Why limit our optimism to a mere tsunami .... Woodward has claimed money is not an issue after all....

We need and should get both Vidal and Di Maria!

God that would be our best freaking summer ever (well at least from what I remember)

Id imagine its the Di Maria signing that will send the fans crazy and the rivals cursing our luck. Attackers tend to do that.

Matic is probably just as important if not more important than Cesc. But its Cesc that everyone is creaming for right now.

Not sure. Vidal's hype is huge. Well deserved as well tbh after his performances in the last couple of years.

Getting Vidal and Di Maria may make me actually like Woodie again

Mitten was suggesting that we might use intermediaries to do it like with the Mata deal. He said he spoke to people he trusts in Italy and they say it is on. He also said that Steve Bates believes it is on, and he wouldn't make it up without proper sources.

Why would we have left it so late in the window though? The only reason I can think of is if LvG was after another CM and Vidal was his second choice but we haven't even been really linked with any other CMs so I just find it baffling that we have dragged it out so long. My belief in this one happening is rapidly dwindling but I hope we get it done.

Didn't see this, where was it said?

Though Mitten hasn't been great this summer he is usually one of the more trustworthy.
