Arturo Vidal

All the Juve fans are shouting from the floor above but go particularly mental when they see Vidal. The most audible fan is shouting "Vidal! Stay with us! Stay with us! Don't go to Manchester! Don't go to Manchester!"

I wish United fans can be this vocal when it comes to doing whatever it takes to keep our players.

Speaking of other targets, that's where I hope Woody pays a lot more attention on monitoring Khedira's case right now. What we need is a midfielder who can help us straight away and a total of 2 quality midfielders in total from here until mid-season. I just don't understand how and why LVG would be waiting after 2 midfielders with injury concerns of that magnitude.

fergie fergie sign em up.

remind me how that ended.

What is that supposed to mean? I talk about supporters exercising their right to shout out loud what they want. We see that with Juventus fans here and we saw the same last year when the Madristas kissed Ronaldo's ass in the midst of those rumors about leaving instead of signing a new contract. In Madrid's case, it worked. What do we have to lose if United fans ever do that?

you dont remember tevez?

You don't seen to know much about North American pro sports salaries. Ronaldo, Messi, Ibrahimovic shit all over them. Not to mention that the NBA and the NFL have salary caps. 20m$ is an elite franchise QB salary in the NFL and in the region of a max contract for a franchise player in the NBA.

That's right pick out the exceptions to make your point.

Let's try this again. Generally speaking, North American pro sports players are better paid than professional soccer players.

Even with out salary caps there are certain salaries that will not be paid so the cap is moot. It's like the minimum wage, no matter that the Government says through legislation it will always be zero.

Off topic, but that reminds me of a per-minute-sports-salary breakdown someone - ESPN(?) - did a while back.

IIRC football was first. Next was the NBA, then the NFL and last was MLB. Probably due to the number of games in a season.

Okay, so Chile's national team manager has all but confirmed our interest in signing him. We just want to be sure about his knee problem.

Vidal pls fix your knee quickly!!!!!!!!!
Ok, so that's definitely real update? Exciting times :)

You said "they are nothing compared to North American sports ", which implies that they are substantially better paid than soccer players. The cap for NBA is around 70m$ and the team with the highest pay roll in the NBA were the Nets with 100m$, in the NFL the salary cap is around 125m$ (for a 53 man roster), which can't be ignored and bought out like in the NBA. Compare that to the EPL and that's less than what the Hotspurs paid their players last year, not even to mention clubs like United, City or Chelsea. So even generally speaking, they aren't nothing compared to North American sports.

Your point about total, and hence average salaries may well be true, but at the top end, no footballer's salary shits all over 20m$. Those three may be marginally over that figure, but I very much doubt there are 8 footballers on that figure.

Odd comment - you don't think if our best player (Rooney not included) was thinking of doing one, there wouldn't be fan(boy)s screaming at him left right and centre?

They didn't though. Tradition at United is that a hesitation over signing a new contract, a (press implied) demand for a payrise or a move, a "only God knows" about the future means you're a traitor. We might rustle up a dead of night, "How dare you talk about a new contract", reprimand for Rio, but we don't beg or plead.

Tevez is different. He played the crowd (though not me, because I wasn't a fan) like a harp, and they got sucker punched.

The thing is, he's a world class talent in an area that we desperately need strengthening. It's not like world class players from outside the Premier League want to come here very often. We shouldn't pull out of any deal unless we're told that his career will be finished within a years time. I know it's risky, but transfers as a whole are risky. You really don't know what you're going to get at the end of the day. We've spent a fortune on healthy players who didn't live up to expectations and contributed very little. It's not like it crippled our club or made us unable to sign other players because we spent alot of money the previous window.

That's what I meant, thanks. In Ronaldo's case, we have seen the public display of emotion from the Madrid fans last year and yet I don't remember having United fans going beak and nails out to show the same amount of affection in any attempt to keep him at United. Looking back and knowing how United always means something big for him, I would have loved to see United fans back then doing that kind of effort to try keeping Ronaldo a lot longer.

In the end, is this just a cultural thing or what?

Ronaldo, Messi and Ibrahimovic shit all over them, really. Ronaldo and Messi are both on more than 18m€ per year NET, that's 24m$ NET. Hard to find good numbers about Ibrahimovic as the french tax issue isn't clearly reported. Just that he get's 14m€ net, which could very well mean that PSG have to pay him more than even Messi and Ronaldo.

8 Footballers that earn about or more than 20m$

Ronaldo
Messi
Rooney
Ibrahimovic
Bale
Falcao
Neymar (Could be abit less maybe 18m$)
Sergio Aguero
Yaya Toure

Don't forget we're talking about $ here which isn't as strong as it used to be.

Oh yeah, was thinking that was their gross.

I still maintain there aren't 8 earning $20m though... in fact there are 5, here's your list completed:

Ronaldo $52m
Messi $41m
Rooney $18m
Ibrahimovic $36m
Bale $25m
Falcao$32m
Neymar $18m
Sergio Aguero $18m
Yaya Toure $19m

Acting like whiney little manbitches, and screaming like girls for your favouritist player to stay, so you don't have to replace his poster on your bedroom wall?

No thanks. United are bigger than any one player. If a player at the club wants to leave then why beg him to stay? It's kind of pathetic, really.

I think what sticks in the mind looking back is the attitude of "hard-core"/british/northern fans, who are indeed a bit above begging, maybe for fear of putting a player above the club. But I'm pretty sure there were millions who happily would and did plead with him to stay given the chance. I can't remember off-hand if we toured the far east at any point in the saga, but I bet if he's walked into a hotel out there he'd have had a similar reception.

Strootman's Knees VS Vidal's Knees

The one who can do more squats gets the contract!

The transfer was confirmed on June 26, 2009... even before United had a chance of making the tour in Asia. Everyone at United, pen-pushers and fans alike, should have fought a lot harder to keep him on board.

I just watched the video with sound... it's only one bloke shouting "stay with us", I'm sure united could muster that up somewhere in our Asian fan-base.:smirk:

Depends on the context and the way you do it really. It's hard to think of an equivalent United player who is a) really good b) in his prime and c) relatively long-serving right now, but if such as player was being tempted away and I bumped into him in the street, aside from saying hello / asking if he minded a quick photo or whatever, I'd probably say something like "don't leave, man, you're a legend... you won't find a better club to play for" etc.

No need for screaming and hysteric mind... I'm not an Italian!

Was never going to happen... we'd done all that the year before and everybody knew that was all we were getting.
It's not like the fans didn't make it clear to him how much we appreciated him, and I'm pretty sure the suits pulled out all the stops too.

Or, you know, shown some fecking self respect, thanked him for his service, wished him well for the future and got back to supporting the players who actually still wanted to play for the club.

Very well actually. Progress.
Have we progressed? Isn't it negative rumours regarding his knee?
The club won't risk another Hargreaves but on the other hand we risked RvN and it paid off. I dunno, it's a tricky one. My heart is saying sign the cnut, feck the knee.

Yeah, but that's not begging. You've asked politely and pointed out how good he has it. You haven't gone to a training session and screamed "Don't leave us Player A, please, please. We need you. Don't gooooooooo!"

Also, Rooney, for feck sake.

I did chain myself naked to John O'shea's gates once to try and stop him moving to Sunderland.

Turned out he wasn't in, so I felt a bit silly when he came home and all I had achieved was to stop him getting into his own driveway.

You live and learn. Won't be doing that again (unless Clevz starts pushing for that big money move).

We didn't risk anything with RVN. We pulled out of the deal because we saw something, he broke down in training with PSV days later, and we waited while he recuperated and signed him a year later, once he'd fully recovered.

Yeah, but he still had the operation so it would of been a risk one way or another buying him after an injury/operation of that magnitude?

There are 8 NBA players making more than $20M in salary; 20 in major league baseball. Big bucks. By that standard football salaries don't seem out of line to me.

Football salaries are kind of restricted because of the transfer fee, If Vidal does join and is one 200k a week imagine what he could have been paid if we didn't have to pay the £45m for him.

If we sign Cuadrado do we still think we'd sign Vidal? I'd be amazed if we spent this kind of money.

If we sign Cuadrado, then we should go for Khedira. The amount we might have to pay for both could well match what is asked for Vidal. Either way, I'm pissed with the injury concern fecking up everything that could be deemed progress on the Vidal front. If it's too complicated, then just proceed to the quite very viable Plan B (it's not every day that we have a possible Plan B that is quite solid and viable).
