Arturo Vidal

X-rays are useless for having a look at the state of someone's meniscus.

An MRI isn't much better.

The only way to get a proper idea of what the inside of his knee looks like would be by knocking him out and doing an athroscopy. Of course, he had an arthroscopy a while ago when he had his op to get him fit for the WC. The pictures the surgeon took before and after operating will be invaluable to anyone wanting to come up with a proper prognosis. They'll be with his case notes.

Fairly sure I read somewhere that Juve were having a hell of a job getting those notes from his Chilean surgeon (or perhaps the other way round?) Either way, I reckon it won't be easy for anyone at United to eyeball them any time soon.

Mind you, most surgeons are more than happy to give their patients a copy of those pictures, if they ask. So Arturo could do us a solid here, if he really is keen on a move.

An Arturoscopy? Isnt that what you use to work out whether something is ArturON or ArturOFF?

We should ask Vidal if we can cut open his knees. We say we only want players who want to play for United, what better way to prove your commitment to the cause than to volenteer to be cut open for the cause?

Seriously tho its a shame they cant do some kind of x-ray to get a better view of what's going on inside there.
If he bleeds red then it's on?

Definitely. If Vidal gives United consent to look at his notes, then it won't be a problem.

What we really need is to carry out an Arturectomy on Juve. Nice clean, quick operation that proceeds without complications.

I'm not a medical expert but shouldn't an MRI be able to show you all you need to see?

It mostly will show you the extent of any tissue/ligament damage. But he would need a functional work out on the knee also and to have the knee manually examined.

Our medical staff should come nowhere near knees, their Hargo case wasn't brilliant work by any stretch of the imagination.

I swear BBC are on a WUM about this  Both times I've clicked onto their sports pages today I've been met with an image of Vidal, and even their transfer ticker has him as the header image currently.

And it certainly can't show whether chronic tendonitis pop up 6, 12, or 24 months down the road.

Well that I know but I mean from a risk analysis point of view, can a combination of a medical and MRI scans tell you how likely it is that something like that can happen?

If not, it is not worth throwing 40m+ on a player who might have serious injury problems in the near future. There's other midfielders out there.

I'll defer to medical doctors on this one. The Washington Wizards had a player, Gilbert Arenas who was an absolute star in the mid-2000s. He tore a meniscus, had surgery and then came back too quickly. He was never the same. Not saying this is predictive of Vidal's recovery, but it must make United a little gun shy.

And therein lies the issue, the MRI I had done earlier this year on my knee came back as clear. Because the MRI was clear, BUPA initially refused to pay for the operation, it took my surgeon writing a letter to them insisting that he knew a damn site more about knees then whoever had made that decision that changed their mind. When the surgeon went in he discovered a torn meniscus, damaged ligament, damage to the back of my kneecap and also to the head of both my femur and fibula.

Can somebody update me if this is ON or not. Didnt his chile coach come out and say we have terms agreed with him or something but issue with the knee? or was that bollocks.

Yep like any diagnostic test never 100% accurate on its own but pretty much gold standard. Obviously to be taken in conjunction with manual tests and any other form of testing. I see no problem in what your surgeon done but BUPA have acted fairly also. Just unfortunate for you in this case.

My assumption when that Chilean paper talked about "United" asking Chile's team doctors for the treatment records of his time with them, what they actually meant was Vidal/his agent asked for the records to give to United. Maybe he hasn't had the nerve to hand them over to us.

In general. I can't imagine us making a straight bid on a player with a suspect knee. Certainly not a bid that is somewhere between €40m and 60m depending on which paper you read. Maybe we can get some shared risk deal (big chunk of the fee dependant on appearances) with Juve, but we'd have to get the same kind of deal with Vidal over wages as well. Perhaps negotiating a big transfer isn't just a matter of sending a fax :smirk:

If the deal is held up due to concerns over his knee-injury, im glad we're taking our time. When Hargreaves was lost out to injury-hell we lost probably one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe, and one of the most versatile players. So lets take our time, and if his knees cannot hold op to scrutiny, I'd say we look elsewhere. Not that there's many of his like around, but, there are other midfielders we can go for.

Listen to that reaction to Vidal at 0.57 compared to all the other Juve players!

There are 8 NBA players making more than $20M in salary; 20 in major league baseball. Big bucks. By that standard football salaries don't seem out of line to me.

Yup.

When compared to North American pro sports, football salaries are nothing I tell ya'.

Okay, so Chile's national team manager has all but confirmed our interest in signing him. We just want to be sure about his knee problem.

Vidal pls fix your knee quickly!!!!!!!!!

Not got sound, what is the reaction?
All the Juve fans are shouting from the floor above but go particularly mental when they see Vidal. The most audible fan is shouting "Vidal! Stay with us! Stay with us! Don't go to Manchester! Don't go to Manchester!"

You don't seen to know much about North American pro sports salaries. Ronaldo, Messi, Ibrahimovic shit all over them. Not to mention that the NBA and the NFL have salary caps. 20m$ is an elite franchise QB salary in the NFL and in the region of a max contract for a franchise player in the NBA.
