Arturo Vidal

It doesn't really end anything does it though? He had surgery to fix his torn meniscus, and Van Gaal wants to see how he'll come back from it. Meniscus surgery can be no big deal at all, or it can cause future problems depending on how the surgery went/how much of the meniscus is left and stuff like that.

There's no way we'll be able to make a proper assessment in just three weeks, especially going on mainly pre season games.

So when are Juventus playing their preseason friendlies and will Vidal feature in them? We could send Moyes to one of those games.

The manager just confirmed what the Chilean papers have been saying all along. We've already heard about the knee and the transfer figure so why is this shocking now? Then again the manager could be just rehashing what he heard in the local news. I heard his knee was fine after a medical, be fairly pissed if we really wanted him and we pull out due to a potential knee injury.

If anything, I think these qoutes all but end this saga. We're not going to part with that kind of money for someone with ongoing issues with his knee. Its just not going to happen.

It does seem to confirm we were seriously in for him at one point, mind. So you can gloat on that. As I say, its a massive shame about the injury, I would have loved him at United.

I also feel even more frustrated knowing we actually might have signed such a fantastic player, in midfield, and its gone down the drain. It seems that there is no end to our midfield jinx. I expect Herrera to injure himself, or discover a new love of Mcdonalds, anyday soon

No it doesn't. The key word in that tweet was
"I know that the main problem in Vidal’s $80m transfer to #MUFC is LVG’s doubt over the improvement of Vidal’s knee”

If anything we haven't ruled out the possibility of the sale and we are probably still probing to find out about the genuine state of his knee firsthand.

I wonder what has changed from during the World Cup till now to suggest that we need to worry about the condition of his knees? He was supposed to have played those games while carrying the injury and that didn't stop our so called interest in him.

Perhaps the previous rumours of him having completed a medical might be true and that a potential problem with his knees may have been flagged up, hence the cooling of our interest. Whatever it is, I trust that LVG has a Plan B or Plan C in mind. Who knows, he may yet do his magic on Anderson to be our back up Box to Box midfild player. (Just Kidding)

I'd been saying this all along. Within a couple of days after El Mercurio reported that United had asked Chilean doctors about his knee, the United journos started getting briefed with the talk about how no contact has been made over Vidal, etc.

The knee being the issue really fits with just about everything that has happened in this saga.

Since the World Cup we asked the Chilean doctors about his knee, and also reports came out that Vidal came back from injury too soon and that he needed injections to play in the WC.

Didnt Vidal or someone at Juve say when he's supposed to be back? I can see this dragging on for another couple of weeks just to see how his recovery develops

I would be absolutely shocked if we sanctioned a deal worth £47 million if there is even the slightest doubt about his knee. And I don't see how those doubts can be erased in three weeks. Maybe we could go back in January if he proves his fitness? But then Juve probably wont want to sell, or will demand even more.

As I say, its pretty gutting in all honesty.

Surely this shows that we are in fact interested him and that Juve and Vidal are both fine with the move. IF the only problem his knee, that is.

What do you mean by "be back" ?

Because is already back, but even if buy him now, he needs to rest for one or two months.

A distinct possibility is to do Vidal now and Strootman in January.

Please bear with me. Fellaini and Ando are done, hasta la vista. Cleverley IMHO is doing to be deemed unworthy of Louis's plans. Carrick and Fletcher are massive question marks going into this season, the balance of probabilities being that both will be serviceable role players for us but little more than that. Herrera is good to go, of course.

Vidal and Strootman are both bona fide box to box mids and with the addition of both (I'll address cost in a moment) we're the equal of any prem side.

Louis may struggle at times to give both regular starts but a midfield that includes Vidal and Strootman is very doable. Vidal is the more offensive of the two B2B midfielders and could at times assume the Herrera role. Or when Herrera plays Louis could easily go with both in midfield, sacrificing either Young (I never thought I'd write those words) or Valencia/Rafael.

It's not likely Carrick is going to carry on past this season at United and I have my doubts about Fletcher too. We'll see. And I'm not aware of anyone in the youth pipeline that looks ready to make it to the first team, although I read great things about Ben Pearson.

As for cost, those two will be very expensive, probably about 100m together. But with the addition of those two we're suddenly a CL-quality squad. If the United board wish to undo the havoc Moyes wrought upon us last season we have to invest heavily. A shame, but that's the price we have to pays for years of neglect under Ferguson and a year of imbecility under Moyes.

It would not be overkill. We're pretty lean in the midfield department right now and rather than spending modest sums on modest players the better investment is in top players -- that is, if we're interested in a deep run in the CL next season. Vidal, Strootman and Herrera would be an insane trifecta of midfielders supported by the declining Carrick and promising but limited Fletcher. A bold vision is required here, mates.

This assumes we offload Fellaini and Ando (hopefully someone will be interested in them), Nani (time's up, amigo), Cleverley (he never really had it, did he?) and Kagawa (terrific player, but he's not even close to Mata and Rooney), Zaha (it was never destined to work out) to balance out the squad.

A Twitter rumour going on now is perhaps Van Gaal wanted Vidal to go on tour with Juve to assess his fitness before putting an official bid in.
Wouldn't a rigorous United medical be a better assessment rather than a couple of friendly games?

Probably, plus the earlier reports we asked for his medical records from Chile.....

Something is happening I reckon, if he doesn't join us I'd assume it is a medical problem and not a problem with anything else.

I remember the Poland manager said Lewandowski was going to join United in 2012.

Smuda was fecking clueless but there was an offer from us, it was the same time we've placed bid for Kagawa. I think that BVB pulled out.

Hopefully we have other alternatives. We shouldn't let this stop us from fixing the midfield.

At the moment it is very difficult to predict which 'camps' are combining for Vidal rumours. If United are in fact interested, expect at least some hint this week. Otherwise it is just seeming that the transfer is being forced on United.

Can anyone shed some light on why so much is being made of Vidal's knee problem, compared to Suarez's? I was under the impression it was basically the same injury and same surgery to resolve it.

A miniscus tear is relatively easy to rehabilitate following surgery. I imagine as we are probably breaking our transfer record then we need to be sure all is A ok.
