Arturo Vidal

Keeping in tradition with United having a British spine to the team, are there any British midfielders that we could turn to as a midfield alternative to Vidal or any other defensive midfielder we're looking at?
We only had a British spine to the team when Fergie was there, albeit the whole time we've been successful, Fergie has been in charge. We could see something similar to Arsenal where they have a French spine to the team but with of course a Dutch spine to the team, different managers and different preferences I guess.

But I honestly think that if there were actual English players available that had the potential to be as good as Vidal then we'd try to sign them. The problem is though, we can go abroad and get the same type of player for much less.

Vidal is a type of player you don't skip if you have any chance to sign him. Even if we do get Kevin Strootman. Plus Carrick, Fletcher and Fellaini are not getting younger, nor better. Herrera, Vidal and Strootman / Kroos would be a Champions League winning midfield.

Aiming high is the best way to go. That CM trio would be wicked & Vidal & Strootman arent unrealistic signings either. Money talks at the end of the day.. Shaw is evidence of that, as he's reportedly on £160k per week now at United. Feckin disgusting to give an 18 year old, but he's ours & thats what matters.

I hope we do try to keep a largish Brit contingent. I think it does work and it's something we've been known for. Not everyone can be a superstar in the team anyway.

I think Van Gaal is a huge draw for players on his own. The fact that we are strengthening heavily and are prepared to spend money to get back to the top isn't something that would go unnoticed either. Add to that the fact that Real are after Kroos and Barca are looking like spending big on Suarez and it looks like Vidal isn't the impossible target he once would have seemed. Still very unlikely mind, but not impossible.

I hope we go all out for him personally. Just pay the asking price and offer him big wages and see what happens. If it doesn't happen then we move on and go for someone else.

The club will continue to monitor any developments once Vidal returns from the World Cup and will move in if they receive encouragement from the player or the Italian club in the coming weeks.
From the Mail. This is spot on I reckon, if Vidal wants to join us then I can see the club pushing hard for the transfer.

Brightonian was right in his argument. He had proven Red or Dead wrong as had others. Yet he was still trying to mangle with the newly promoted and hopelessly ill-informed Red.

Red or Dead as observed in previous threads simply doesn't let things go and anyone could see that this would quickly turn into something other than Vidal chat (the clue was him personally attacking Brightonian).

I appreciate and respect what you're saying, as you've been here longer than I, but I feel that it was necessary to step in before it got silly.

I hope this makes more sense.

Sound man. You summed it up pretty well. Cheers

Quote folk in a post you're tryin to chill out, or just refer to their name in said post. Its hard to know what the reference is to be honest man - unless you go through pages, which is a hassle..

Brightonian is a gobshite i might add. You'll find out for yourself in due course

We should make them an offer they can't refuse.50M, Nani, 250,000 a week and a promise to buy his mate Sanchez.

Total agreement with that Red.

Its a snowball effect. One potentially great player in - other players hear about it. 2 potentially great players in & more players hear about.

Considering Shaw has just become the most expensive teenager in world football, that most definitely will have heads turned..

"...if they receive encouragement from the player or the Italian club..." oh Christ, it's Fabregas all over again.

Not really, there's no point in wasting time and effort on a player who doesn't want to come here. Apparently the club is meeting his people today, so they will have a better idea of where he wants to go.

60 million quid on Vidal and I'd hope we'd not be using (wasting) him in a destroying/defensive role, assuming we play Van Gaals 4-3-3. He's a proper driving, energetic centre midfielder. I don't think we should be getting him for the purpose of curtailing that

Vidal would never sign with us to be used like that (nor any other club)

He likes to attack the box and score goals. No coach will stop him from doing that.

I really want us to go all out for him but It's more than likely going to end up in disappointment he'll either stay in Juve or move to Madrid.

I doubt that figure is correct. More like £70.000,£80.000 a week I reckon.

Been in and out of the Caf the last few days, will someone briefly explain why everyone's saying Vidal is a possibility? Genuine curiosity as I've been busy last week or so, anything new or any reputable sources reporting it?

Everyone's goofed up on slushy juice. It's been an exciting end to the week.

I think juve will sell for decent money. There have been reports in tuttosport and gds that we could offer 40-45 million. When your newspapers start quoting figures then the player is very much attainable.it all depends if he wants to come. Ideally it would be best if chile are knocked out (for clubs). We end the sanchez and vidal sagas.
If we dont get vidal ,khedira is a good option. He will be available for 30 million pounds as per reports in marca.
Either of the two + 1 experienced cb and I wpuld be very happy.

"...if they receive encouragement from the player or the Italian club..." oh Christ, it's Fabregas all over again.

But what do we now know was the truth behind Fabregas? That he was interested, had made noises behind the scenes, and it was the change of manager at his end that scuppered it.

Not at all man. The problem with British & Irish footballers, is that they get it handed to them before they've even kicked a ball for the 1st team. The money & the profile is their main concern & they dont seem to want to surpass their threshold as players. Foreign players have a much better attitude & the better they become - the more they earn & they use alot of those earnings to look after their families & local areas in their homeland.

They're driven for much more than themselves & thats makes them hungry to be better players. English players are notorious for gettin the feck outta the Dodge once training has finished. Many foreign players will hang around with the youth teams afterwards to practice skills. Cantona & Ronnie were famous for it. Becks & Scholesy did that also.

Vidal is someone who plays like he's playin for more than himself. There's no top-class English Central-Midfielder who even comes close to havin that desire. The only other CM player with that same desire, who played in English football in the past 20 years, wasnt even English - he was Irish & he was Keano..

Fletch is in a similar mode to those two, as regards to improve himself all the time. Ironically, it was Keano that said he wasnt United quality & slated him on MUTV. He proved him very wrong & he's probably turned out to be one of the most loved players of all time at United because of his never-say-die attitude.

I surely hope that Fletch has had a good clean bill of health over the summer & has got his fitness in good stead. If we can get him back to what he was for just one season - i dont think you'll ever hear a greater cheer at OT for one of our own...

I don't think we "know" any such thing, but it does seem that for one reason or another we wasted a lot of time and effort based on encouragement that turned out to go nowhere.

I'm not saying we shouldn't be going after Vidal, of course we should do anything we can to try and get him. Just that this sort of language doesn't make me optimistic.

This is the type of signing that attracts other big names. Thats not to take anything from Herrara or Shaw but for example if a player like Sanchez or Reus, Hummels were looking at what was going on at United right now and whether the risk (no CL football this season) is one they can readily take on...I think I signing like Vidal gives a very clear intention as to the clubs ambitions to quickly get back to where they belong....I'm not sure how players think but thats logical.

What about scholes, he had that desire too. Even if it was expressed in a quiet way.

I dont think any of them especially the British players would be where they are if they did not have desire. I just think from the ages of 15-19 there is very little real competitive football for this age group and talents get wasted through a simple lack of football!

I kinda covered Scholesy in that bracket Mitch.

Many foreign players will hang around with the youth teams afterwards to practice skills. Cantona & Ronnie were famous for it. Becks & Scholesy did that also.

My main point was comparing Vidal to someone from these shores & Keano had it in abundance..

Herrera and Shaw are fantastic signings, however, the signing of someone like Vidal could be the catalyst that our young players need to go on to become the next great team - in a similar way to how Cantona (and Keane) became the catalyst back in the 90's.

A top player to add to all the other very good players and promising youngsters and our next few seasons will be incredibly exciting.

If we tell Vidal we're signing Sanchez too, and vice-versa, they'll both agree to it and then we'll have a team to merk everyone

I doubt that figure is correct. More like £70.000,£80.000 a week I reckon.

Its all over the English media & radio man. I dont see how that figure is exaggerated to be honest - there was only one club really linked to him & that was us. We obviously out-bid any potential suitors with the fee & the wages. I couldnt give a shite about the money involved - he's United-type player & hasnt even reached 19 yrs old yet. Great signing & Evra's gonna be brilliant showing him the way forward to be the best. He'll also teach him about the history & traditions of the club is my guess also.

Evra said it himself - once he read everything about the club after he arrived, he fell in love with it & wanted to know more from ex-players etc..

I hope Evra's sung on & off the pitch for every game he plays for us next season. Its his last season. Wonderful player for us & great character to boot. Proper leader in many respects. He'll be an Ambassador for us when he retires - whenever that is, is anyone's guess of course :)

Dangerously close to the word "project" being used here.

Said that myself man.

If we get one - we've a great chance of gettin both. 2 close friends playing for the same top-3 club in the world & both love a fight / challenge. United is perfect for those fellas - everyone hates us & we dont give a flying f*ck either..
