Arturo Vidal

Does anybody have any idea of the process of buying a player???

From identifying the target, 'preparing' the bid, submitting the bid, at which point is money transferred bla bla bla??

I, for the life of me cannot work out how things take so long.

I was just thinking the same thing today.

I know it's all BS--but the process reported in the press about the whole Vidal saga is curious. Are we to believe that a team spends weeks and weeks "preparing a bid," whatever that means? It's not like this is D-Day where thousands of men must be maneuvered into place. Seems like you decide on a fee and salary for the player-why it takes longer than an afternoon is beyond me.

Then--are we really to believe that Vidal said to his agent: hey, I'm going on vacation. Unless there's a death in the family I don't want to be contacted. Moreover, while I'm away I'll be so engrossed in reading War and Peace that I won't give a second's thought to my future at Juve. That'll have to wait until I get back. And-oh, whatever you do don't speak with Juve, because they may get mad and fire me?

To top it off, when he gets back from vacation he makes an appointment to talk with his club, which apparently is the first time the issue of a new salary and transfer is raised. So Juve have to meet and decide on transfer fee because they haven't even considered the prospect of selling Vidal.

It's a joke. For the life of me I can't figure out what really goes on--but it can't be the farcical process portrayed in the press.

Last year people moaned about Fellaini last minute signing, fair enough, this year we get 2 in early and still moaning because we have signed anyone for a few weeks, do we have to buy a player every day ? Secondly Chelsea have only signed 3 players not 25. City haven't done much, Arsenal signed Sanchez, sure we're not finished yet but we need a midfielder and a CB - that's all.
And I hope Vidal is the midfielder
I think the moaning and impatience stems from the fact that we all no where we need stregthening. We also all have an idea on the players who would help take us to the next level. We would like to hope that the people that call the shots also recognise what is required, If we see it, they must see it, right?
We then watch teams that were miles ahead of us last season strengthen even more than we have so far.
We then have Woody coming out with statements like 'watch this space'
We are then left with weeks of endless speculation, and with each passing day the season is nearer and nearer with no signs of us making any effort to improve.

I think thats where the moaning comes from anyway.

I can't remember, were there a lot of reports saying we were gonna sign Van Persie? What I do recall is that I didn't believe it one bit and filed it under paper bollocks until I saw it myself on Sky Sports News.

I did not quite believe it too prior to the deal being done. But it was announced on the United website that night

What a night it was

Neither of those teams finished 7th in the league, and then went on to lose 4 first team players. Signing 2 players is not enough, you'd be a fool to think otherwise, even with the Van Gaal factor.

First team? We have signed 2 already and another 2 would be enough especially as we do not have European football this season other than the youngsters coming through - I know the squad's history only started last season being a mid-table side under an incompetent and all this rubbish but there you go

We need defenders badly, no cover for rafeal and shaw, 4 of our first choice defenders injury records are shocking, that defence is a time bomb 2 or 3 injurys we are in trouble. rafeal is already injured, that leaves us with 4 defenders to choose from at this moment of time. There is no debate, we need players to add depth and quality, our midfield options are grim, if herrera misses the start of the season, we are in trouble.

Lets look at our defence and midfield options

Defence
rafeal jones smalling evans shaw
Signed? shaw
left? ferdnand vidic evra butner
midfield
carrick herrera fletcher anderson fellaini clevely/valencia nani young/ janazaj mata kagwa
signed? herrera
left? bebe giggs

Yea we really should not panic, we lost 4 defenders 1 been replaced, that is numbers lost. Say herrera jones smalling and shaw pick up any injury's, we are in deep trouble. What is the key to the current success of united? making sure jones smalling shaw herrera rooney or RVP stay fit every game. That is has risky has you can get, it is a thin thin squad quality wise. I would not even call anderson and fellaini options for van gaal anymore, so we are down to herrera fletcher and cleverly, fantastic

Because its not our money so we dont actually care ourselves, but theres people out there whos money it actually is.. its between 40 and 60 million. You have to be pretty damn sure you actually want this player.

It is slightly funny when people are like 'ffs why cant we just pay the extra 10 million', as though they have it spare themselves!
in the greater scheme of things, an extra 10 million is pocket change to the Glazers. Thats the problem.
To put things into perspective, if i had 990 pounds and saw a TV that i really really want that cost 1010. I would just draw an extra 20 quid out. No questions asked.

Yes but its the fans who really want Vidal, not necessarily LVG or the Glazers.

After Fellaini they surely must be being a bit catious, especially as they have already shelled out the best part of 60 million on unproven in the EPL players.

Much more than that spent on assorted flops when you also consider the last few years of Fergie's reign.

Vidic and Evra were only real first teamers - Shaw replaced Evra need a CB
We are probably going to be playing 3-5-2 so wing backs between Rafael Shaw Young Valencia
Midfield we need another (Vidal?) back up or rotation Fletcher and Carrick not counting the others
Forwards we don't need anyone
No European football and youngsters notwithstanding

I think it's definitely a good thing that things have gone quiet for the moment. It's better than having every Italian outlet spouting out the same damn story every day.

Well they should listen to the fans then - we all knew Fellaini was at best overpriced!

Rio, Vidic, Evra and Giggs were all first team players. Not all starters, but they played important roles (despite Rio actually being a bit shit and pretty much past it, he was an option).

I don't actually disagree that 2 more would be enough. It's the fact we aren't getting them done now that I have a problem with. Just because we got a couple of signings early doesn't mean we should sit and be content with what we have.

It's very, very reminiscent of last season right now, don't let our two signings cloud that.

Still, 4 weeks left, we can just about stay away from the panic button for now.

You still got to replace those numbers, young and valencia has wingback options? that is a grim thought, especially young who is the one who should be out the door, but no one seems to want to join united. Even if its 352, we literally have only 3 CB's, keane maybe a tidy prospect, but you need another CB.

Carrick and fletcher, 2 players who were the starters against rome at OT in 2007, we are in 2014 that was 7 years ago 3 years close to a decade, by now you start to realise that is an ageing combination, which shows we need a CM badly, we should be expecting herrera to carry this midfield. We sign 2 players, oh that is an amazing summer, there is major surgery need doing with the backbone of this squad, cleverly anderson fletcher and fellaini I would not call proper midfield options, especially at the highest level

The midfield and defence is a time bomb, 4 injurys to key players of those 2 positions, we are in trouble

You're referring to Herrera and...?

Shaw. Hes had a good season, but as we know time and time again one good season at a medium level club does not mean you can do it year in year out for a club like United, plus hes very young.

Not saying he wont of course but they were both expensive signings, and I wouldnt be surprised if they arent so keen to spend another 40 or 50 million so soon.

If that is the case, the club's mentality is has outdated by atleast 7 years, its not 2007 anymore where 60 million is enough, allot more needs spending. If they do not want to play this game, sell the club to people who can keep up. Because it is the glazers and woodwards fault why we are in this mess with their transfer model since 2009, cutting corners has cost us champions league football, and they are too blame for the abysmal Moyes appointment, they may still not learn their lesson

But that's what I said, 2 already in and 2 more to come -.
As for the youngsters at CB , Blackett appeals more than Keane, looks a good prospect
If any team had 4 big injuries at the same time they would be in trouble as well and that includes City and Chelsea

There is a difference between a player, and a prospect, we need the former not the latter.

Not really, if they lost 3 players at the back its a blow, we lose 3 players at the back, it is catastrophic. We cannot go into the new season expecting rafeal jones smalling and evans stay fit all season, you got to have depth. No top team has 5 defenders to choose from, not if they are injury prone.

Valencia and young at wingbacks, does not fill me with much confidence, but we will see. My concern is the club adding depth to the defence and midfield, the only positive is VG has managed to find a system to accommodate all 3 of RVP rooney and mata, even though there is not much pace about the 3

Vidal, Di Maria and two defenders. Anything sort of those numbers and that quality and we be relying on too higher degree of luck to finish in the top 4.

you get a stack of signings in the last 2 weeks of the window every year.
It's ridiculous, and we don't understand it, but it happens.

Ben Thornley on MUTV suggesting we should get De Jong and spunk the rest on a defender. He also admitted he's never watched Vidal play. Why don't pundits do their research before coming onto a talk show. Clueless.

Just the fact that we've already signed 2 players means it's not like last summer and I'm sure we will sign another couple of players (maybe one or two squad players as well) but as LVG says he wants to analyse the squad and work with a smaller squad especially as we have much fewer games this season.
The major targets have no doubt been identified and Woodward will be working towards buying who LVG wants (not who Woodward wants)
Last season has damaged a lot of people's views of the squad and the way the transfers have been done nevermind the inept tactical display that was witnessed

TBF I'd wager that's true for most people on here prior to the World Cup.

Ben Thornly responding to a caller on MUTV when asked about the potential Vidal signing.

"We don't need him, dissapointed in the World Cup, we have Fletcher and I would prefer De Jong"

Please Ed, don't listen to him.

So he's not seen him play other than whilst half crocked at the WC but we don't need him.

Stellar journalism.

What have I missed? This thread is about 80 pages up from when I last saw it.
