Disagree with this. In a 4-2-3-1 I think you're spot on that a Herrera/Vidal/Mata midifield lacks balance and places too much of a holding requirement on Vidal, when you really want him pushing up and effecting the game high up the pitch - both with and without the ball, the latter allowing him to press high up and win possession.

In a 3-5-2 I don't see this as an issue however, with the security of three centre backs there isn't the same requirement for a DM. They offer more focus and ability defensively than a holding midfielder, so the difference someone like De Jong would make would be negligible if he replaced someone like Jones IMO.

In fact, with Herrera and Vidal I actually think an extra centre back compliments that duo better defensively than another pressing midfielder - Vidal and Herrera press already and Vidal in particular is one of the best ballwinners playing right now. An extra defender to be responsible positionally is more of a requirement than another midfielder in there.

Vidal/Herrera/Mata in a 3-5-2 is a great fit IMO and much better than a 4-2-3-1. I agree that there will be a far greater requirement on Vidal to hold than he had at Chile for instance where he played off the forwards, and to a lesser extent a bigger defensive role than he had at Juventus. But the difference is not going to be huge in this system and IMO Vidal could pretty much still play his natural game.

The center back in the 3-5-2 will have to alternate between his cb duty and the midfield duty for this duo to work. The difference in the formation I posted and the 3-5-2 is that the centerback will play furthur up the pitch to disallow one of Vidal or Herrera playing the protective role. Allowing these players to still be at their best without having to alternate anchoring the back four. Their is more security in the 3-5-2 system for this midfield duo, but one still have to anchor unless the centerback is instructed to do so. As we seen the pre-season so far, Fletcher and Cleverley was the obvious anchor in our team while Herrera had the free box to box role. Even for his Dutch side, he had de Jong anchoring in that system. Point still stand that without the centerback taking up this anchoring duty, one of the players in this duo will be limited. The alternation between defensive responsibility crap is in theory, mostly bs, because Vidal would most likely play the furherest forward as he is very strong in the attack, while Herrera will become a deep lying playmaker.

I'm not a massive fan of the 352 yet, because I don't see much evidence that wing-backs are going to be effective for us. But I can't deny everything you've said there makes a lot of sense.

When you think about two-man box-to-box midfields that have been successful in the past (for example, our own Scholes-Keane), Vidal-Herrera seems like it would be successful in any system. Vidal is the closest thing to Keane in football right now, and Herrera is definitely more defensively solid than Scholes was. But I'm somewhat convinced by people who say that football has changed enough that a two-man midfield like Scholes-Keane wouldn't be as effective as it was back in their day.

However, playing two btb CMs in front of three CBs, as you're suggesting, could be the way to make a Scholes-Keane-esque midfield work in today's football.

I still reckon it will be De Jong and Depay as opposed to Vidal and Di Maria with Depay staying an extra season in holland to develop

The thing I don't understand is, if that is the case, the deals should have been done by now?. Why would there be any delays in the transfer of Depay and De Jong??. We are three weeks away from the season.

Because we are still working on a deal to sign Vidal.

Has there been any actual evidence we're in for De Jong? He's good at his job but I'd hope we'd be aiming higher than a budget 30 year old City reject. Signing him would only really make sense if we were tight on funds, which by all accounts is a thing of the past. If we're after a DM we should splash out to get a top quality one, or at least one capable of being top quality.

Van Gaal has every right to see United players in action before he makes moves on transfer market. American tour is ending in some 10 days, after that some things should be a lot clearer who's not needed and positions that needs to be strengthen

After cleverlys performance last night Van Gaal surely must see the need for another cm.

Has there been any actual evidence we're in for De Jong?

Fortunately, no. I've barely even seen any rumours, which is telling given that United get linked at least once each summer to pretty much every player out there.

I'm amazed how many here want us to sign him. I refuse to believe there aren't better options out there than this entirely one-dimensional thug player who we all laughed at when he was at City. Just because Van Gaal was forced to use him for the Dutch doesn't make him a 'Van Gaal player'. If anything he lacks the one thing Van Gaal wants players in every position on the pitch to have, good ability on the ball.

I've just watched the game and he was utterly shocking. Seriously under par player. In fact I'd say our frustrating player really showed their worst traits yesterday. Young, Nani, Cleverley and Kagawa were close to useless (loved his turn though).

Fingers crossed this is sorted soon. I've heard of the deadline for both clubs being the second of august. I'm praying for an exciting Monday with a new signing.

Delaying the inevitable I'm afraid. I can see next week being pretty shit for us, Vidal stays at Juve and Di Maria signs for PSG.

I dont even count on us signing Di Maria.

We must have watched a different game then.

There has been more evidence we'll sign Vidal than there has been that we'll get De Jong. A lot fans seem to be feeling sorry for themselves after last season and as a result, think we'll end up with a player of De Jong's calibre rather than Vidal's.

In terms of actual evidence, it's all just media and twitter rumour. At least Vidal has passed up numerous opportunities to stamp out rumours of our interest.

Where have you heard this?

Perhaps there will be news tomorrow, but if this goes from nothing to having signed Vidal by tomorrow, I'll shit in my hat and wear it.

I've heard this too, something to do with them going on their pre-season tour and not wanting to lose players during it.

The most unbelievable thing about all this is the price. 35m GBP for probably the best midfielder in the world right now of his type.
People seriously underrate just how bad the financial climate is for italian clubs. a prime Tiago silva and a peak Ibrahimovic went for a 50m package... in a day and age where world class cb's might as well be folklore and a 30 goal a season striker still rules the roost. A combination of Juve having an absolutely STACKED midfield and wanting to distribute some of that quality in other areas of the squad, and a realisation from their board that a good offer is too much to refuse right now until Serie A can gain some of its following and sponsorship back after the Match fixing scandles.

Is it unfair of me to instantly lose all faith in him because he's associating himself with tancredi?

No absolutely not. I was going to give him the benefit of the doubt but now with Tancredi involved, its out of the question.

No matter how much you tell yourself you're not going to give hope to this happening... no matter how much you try and convince yourself... you know it's going to hurt when, as always, the clear and obvious quality signing never materialises.

The links with us and Vidal are there because it makes so much sense it's ridiculous.

He's world class, available for the right price (likely a realistic one for his talent in 2014), in a position we are desperately in need of strengthening... we're also crying out for a star player.

Last but definitely not least, it seems that we may not face much competition for him either. The bigger boys of the market have promptly closed on their enviable targets.

It does seem like the perfect storm to sign Vidal.
