So what?

Regardless, the more top quality players you have, the better you cope when one gets injured.

At the moment it's Herrera + Shite. What if Herrera gets injured?

Not talking about what Vidal will bring, I am talking about rafeal jones and smalling. cannot see them playing every week, with their injury records. That is the concern, lack of strength in depth with our defensive options at the minute

I do not see anyone else coming in , and that again will be our downfall. No quality in midfield beyond Herrera, and lack of numbers in defence

This one is on. I can feel it in my bones.

Then count me back in! Although I never really felt this was off after that quick interview at the airport. That sort of childish giggling when he was saying no was not the most convincing of denials combined with his refusal to commit to Juve. Will certainly be an interesting one.

This Juve fan was quite confident Vidal would stay but he's losing faith now, poor guy...:D

I think Vidal will leave but I'd be very surprised if it was to us.

Yeah but where else would he realistically go? Madrid? They'd have 5 high-profile players fighting for two spots in center midfield. Even by Madrid's crazy transfer standards that's still foolish.

It's either Juve or United, in my opinion. He's 27 and knows he can get a fatter contract with us than what Juve can offer. When you're offered a raise, and the club that is offering the raise is the biggest club in the world (brand, history, etc.) then you would seriously consider it or just stay where you are (and he's happy at Juve).

Personally I think it could go either way, though I'm cautiously optimistic.

No way we are getting him for 35 millions, that is a bargain in this market nowdays....

Or Liverpool :nervous:.

Juve, Marotta will meet with the prosecutor Vidal
The summit with Felicevich will be critical to understand the real extent of tenders Manchester United

TURIN - Fernando Felicevich is about to land in Italy. The well-known attorney Arturo Vidal is scheduled to meet not only with his client, but also for the Bianconeri. The summit will be crucial to Felicevich with Beppe Marotta to understand the real extent of the offers of Manchester United, first of all, and the other companies involved in the Juventus midfielder. You know, Fernando Felicevich has played in recent weeks the delicate role of the mediator. Its goal is to deliver to Juventus offer reasonable (ie not less than 45 million), to facilitate the final negotiations between the Bianconeri and candidates buyers. So at least he moved in his talks with United.

Steve Bates is the most trustworthy journalist in the business - in fact he's the only journalist who I bother to read articles from because he's that much better than everyone else.

Arguably the best journalist ever.

Wov,thats something serious..

So it's not just the caf that gets really, really excited during the transfer window then.

nxckson - This is the most excited I've been throughout the Vidal saga. It's going to happen isn't it. wanking intensifies

Jeffrey_Forbes - cocks out boys!

Kagawabunga - I'm tired of taking it out so many times this summer :(

addodd - I'm in full muppet mode right now

Embarrassing from Talksport there - spent 5 mins talking about him not being the right signing cause he's a forward.....topped it off by arguing that Chelsea is a better move over utd for any player.

Joke.

They've watched 1 World Cup match and seem him play up top behind Sanchez. Shows how much these "experts" research. Stealing a living

Is there a reason why we would make his agent make the offer to Juventus for us? To show them that Vidal wants to leave?

If the player wants the move, we could use his agent to push through the deal.

He's not going to put in a transfer request and lose his loyalty bonus but you'd imagine it would put united in a stronger position to capture his signature if the players agent is actively trying to agree a fee for the buying club.

We did the same with the Mata transfer according to reports...

Yes, there was that talk of an 'intermediary' with the Mata deal.

From the outside looking in, it seems like Clubs seem to often prefer to use agents now rather than communicate directly with other Clubs.

Normally the club approach the agent to see if his client would be interested and it evolves from there. Or conversely the agent approaches the potential buying club to say the player would be interested. It's all changed from years ago when the manager would speak directly to the player himself. The agent or advisors are now people with significant power and like it or not that's how it is nowadays.

I think it might be how Woodward is planning to operate in the transfer market. SAF and Gill baulked at paying agent fees. I wonder if coming in with a fresh perspective he recognises that agent fees are an inescapable part of the game now and if we are going to hand over £3/4/5m to an agent it might as well be to employ him to actually work on the clubs behalf.

The deal makes no sense. If anyone expect herrera or Vidal to play a deeper role, they are mistaken. Herrera had the 2nd most threw ball in la liga playing further forward, while Vidal had scored 18 goals also playing in the same role. Unless we add a cdm to this midfield duo, this is not happening. To illustrate, we will have to remove our back three into a back two and change our wingback to fullback instead to stabalize our defensive:

Gk
Rb-rcb-lcb-lb
Cdm
Vidal-herrera
Mata
Van Persie Rooney

Width will be lacking in the system above and will ask alot of our fullback to provide it.

Disagree with this. In a 4-2-3-1 I think you're spot on that a Herrera/Vidal/Mata midifield lacks balance and places too much of a holding requirement on Vidal, when you really want him pushing up and effecting the game high up the pitch - both with and without the ball, the latter allowing him to press high up and win possession.

In a 3-5-2 I don't see this as an issue however, with the security of three centre backs there isn't the same requirement for a DM. They offer more focus and ability defensively than a holding midfielder, so the difference someone like De Jong would make would be negligible if he replaced someone like Jones IMO.

In fact, with Herrera and Vidal I actually think an extra centre back compliments that duo better defensively than another pressing midfielder - Vidal and Herrera press already and Vidal in particular is one of the best ballwinners playing right now. An extra defender to be responsible positionally is more of a requirement than another midfielder in there.

Vidal/Herrera/Mata in a 3-5-2 is a great fit IMO and much better than a 4-2-3-1. I agree that there will be a far greater requirement on Vidal to hold than he had at Chile for instance where he played off the forwards, and to a lesser extent a bigger defensive role than he had at Juventus. But the difference is not going to be huge in this system and IMO Vidal could pretty much still play his natural game.

Think it's pretty clear that we would be using his agent to get the initial discussions in place. All fits into place if we are really interested, once we know for sure Vidal wants to move and Juventus are open to a bid that is when the negotiations between the clubs can take place and decide the fee if acceptable to both parties. This should gather pace now he's back, so we should know fairly soon one way or the other, still confident it's on but if not think he'll stay at Juve, but at 27 probably his last chance to try another challenge.

This theory would also tie in with the official "we aren't in for Vidal" and "no contact" lines the club journos like Mitten have been persistent with recently. It gives us plenty of deniability to save face if we can't get him.
