I agree with that. I've never seen anybody so deliberately set themselves up for a fall!

He can't be bluffing, surely?

I can't see us getting a big signing. If he signs the likes of Blind and De Vrij and calls them big signings, he will look like a complete muppet.

And that's exactly what I believe he is going to do.

After going out and saying what he said, he needs to provide at least one top quality world class player. I'd say two.

Either he is completely confident and someone like Vidal is as good as done, or he is a complete muppet.

Yep. His reputation with the fans will take an epic nose dive if he doesn't pull off at least one world class signing.

His comments the other day were completely unnecessary and have raised the expectation levels of the fans again.

If he overpays 10 million for each player you still would not consider them to be big signings?

In a monetary sense yes. But the market is inflated. We need bonafide ready made world class acquisitions and they are the players that are referred to as big signings.

I was being sarcastic after Woodward mentioned splashing out money. I understood what the op wanted to say.

Anyone else think that Woodward may be bluffing?? He protests too much about the money we have to spend however this transfer hasn't been sorted yet. I have a little doubt creeping in as to the players we are actually gonna sign, I think woody left the tour to try and complete the vermaelan signing.

He wouldn't be the right partner for Herrera.

We saw in the first half tonight how good Herrera is as the midfield anchor. Add Vidal's defensive industry ahead of him and that's a perfectly balanced midfield duo. Not unlike the balance Madrid had with Alonso-Modric last season.

Disagree. Fletcher was doing most of the midfield anchoring, especially when we were attacking. If we asked Vidal to do that job, we wouldn't be getting the best out of him. While Vidal and Herrera are different players, they're both suited to the same role. We need a proper defensive midfielder that'll allow Herrera the freedom to roam in front of him.

Where would that leave Mata? On the wing or on the bench - neither of which are ideal.

As part of a fluid, interchanging front line where he has the intelligence to drop in deep behind RvP and Rooney when needed and also still offer some width. I know it looked nice tonight but in the PL it will not be the same easy, open cake walk, in the PL Vidal and Herrera would give us attacking CM's who also have plenty of defensive strength to help our DM who is likely to be an aging Carrick or Fletcher this season.

Vidal, Herrera and Mata in midfield could be the sex.

But I would take Strootman too.

The 3-5-2 I saw today, really got the best out of our players. The link up between Herrera and Mata was jizz worthy. Think we have to acknowledge that LVG is going to play 3 in midfield and in that system we already have Herrera, Mata and Kagawa who are all top midfielders. Potentially Januzaj too. In the #6 position fletcher and Carrick is ok. I wouldn't be mad for us to go through the season with this midfield. But ideally we would get a top class player there. Vidal would be ace. But there are others who I imagine might be even better suited to the role.

i see your point, but do you have any suggestion who United should sign for this position? Martinez is not available.

Ideally I would love Carrick to play that role but he is injured now and will miss the entire pre-season. Martinez, Strootman, S. Bender or Carvalho would all be good candidates for such role while Carvalho is probably the only one that would be available this season but he is going to be expensive. Maybe the best thing would be to invest in a good CB instead and rely on Carrick and Fletcher on that position for this season. Next season the availability of Martinez or Strootman might look differently.

I knew it. Vidal won't fit well in this team unless we have a deep-lying player like Carrick or Fletcher playing. Herrera loves to push up and press higher up the pitch, and he loves to go forward whenever we have the ball. Him and Vidal would be lovely to see if we want to get tons of goals against weaker sides, but such a midfield partnership isn't the most assuring.

Vidal hasn't played too many seasons in a more defensive, disciplined role (he probably did it for 1-2 seasons for Leverkusen but no more than that). He would have been perfect for us if we didn't get Herrera. However, Herrera will be at his best with someone with greater defensive discipline. Vidal isn't that player.

Exactly. It was a stupid thing to say unless he has something sorted already.

If he overplays for a player, that does not make them a big signing. If he paid 30m for Blind, I still would not call that a big signing.

LvG usually plays with 3 in midfield. Vidal would still be the perfect signing.

Carrick is a bigger defensive liability than Vidal. He is already declining and this injury wont help him either. I really dont want to rely on him as a starter anymore. Martinez isnt for sale. Benders arent for sale either unless you overpay. Strootman is injured. Carvalho is fairly unproven and very expansive.

Vidal is quality and could help out for a season in a more defensive role, even so thats not his natural position. Next season United could get someone like Bender or Strootman and use Vidal in his natural role.

So no Mata through the middle? It wouldn't make too much sense putting him out wide given that he's much more influential through the middle. Plus, van Gaal loves to have quick and fast players at the wider areas who take on their man. Mata doesn't seem like this sort of a player.

First of I don't think Vidal is a defensive liability and neither is Carrick. Carrick has over the years always mostly had to hold together our midfield on his own and more often than not did a great job of it and now after that catastrophic Moyes season he is suddenly past it? Sorry but I'm not having it I'm 100% certain we will see Carrick at his best under van Gaal again once he is fully recovered from injury. On top of that LvG rates him really highly and was planning with him.
