Arturo Vidal

Just seeing Vidal on our midfield roster makes me feel all giddy inside.

It's a shame it ain't a reality (yet) though. I don't think I could handle seeing Cleverley or Fellaini on the team sheet :(

It isn't that they couldn't do it, the issue is that if you're signing the best midfielder in world by spending £50m on Vidal then you want to play him in his best role. It's not that he can't cover for Herrera, or vice versa, the issue is why you would want either of them to do that.

A more balanced midfield would have Carvalho holding for example, then just let Vidal go and do his thing.

Exactly. Vidal and Herrera are much more better players when they do not take up restrictive roles or "take turns falling back in midfield." The duo would work well against the weaker teams, but we would still have to sacrifice one player proficiency in their nominal role to get the best out of the other. My preference would be Herrera take up The number 6 deep lying playmaking role, while Vidal becomes our number 8 who has the free roaming midfield role. Against teams like City, Bayern, Chelsea, etc., away or home at times, we can add a natural protective shield behind one or two the these players to have better control of the midfield.

Every player has a responsibility to get back and defend as much as they do getting forward, regardless of their fee. Opponents would find it very difficult to track 2 top class midfielders bombing forward from defensive positions.

When you don't have possession, mark up and defend. When you do, then find space to receive the ball. It's not difficult.

I don't agree that one player should only occupy one part of the pitch, especially central midfielders.

I don't think there will be too much of an issue with Vidal's defensive work, even if he went for £100m. And that really wasn't what I was saying - by highlighting his fee I was really just trying to illustrate how he's the best midfielder in the world, and how he would cost a huge amount. The combination of those two things makes it extremely important we get the best out of him.. Why sign him otherwise.

The comment about letting Vidal do his thing includes his defensive work, his best asset in defence is his pressing which really is relentless. Trouble is when you press as high as he does without a holder you run the risk of getting caught out. So I really wasn't suggesting that he shirks any defensive duty.

I also wasn't suggesting that he sticks to one part of the pitch - in fact the whole reason I would prefer Vidal to be combined with a holder like Carvalho is precisely to allow him to go wherever he wanted without any restrictions. He wouldn't need to 'hold' or cover, so he can do what he wants. He's the best midfielder on the pitch and having someone sit back allows him to go and express himself.

I'm starting to believe this could realistically happen and that was a feeling I was trying to avoid.

Like that girl, you are never going to get and want to avoid being in love with, but cant just help it.

Trying to avoid going into muppet mode for the Vidal links but it's getting hard

That side again was:

De Gea-Rafael-Shaw-Hummels-Evans-Vidal-Herrera-Di Maria-Mata-Januzaj-Van Persie.

To me that doesn't look better than:

Neuer-Lahm-Alaba-Dante-Boateng-Schweinsteiger-Kroos-Gotze-Robben-Ribery-Muller

nor:

Diego Lopez-Carvajal-Coentrao-Pepe-Ramos-Alonso-Modric-Ronaldo-Bale-Rodriguez-Benzema

nor:

Bravo-Alves-Pique-Mascherano-Alba-Busquets-Xavi-Iniesta-Pedro-Neymar-Messi
Strange comparison. All sides have weaknesses.

Bayern- Dante, Gotze weak links coparable to Evans and Januzaj.
Barca- Mascherano, Pedro same comparison.
United- Evans, Januzaj? why not put Jones in and Rooney.
Madrid- Actually this is close to no weaknesses Carvajal?

Obviously it isnt adirect comparison as there are certain players with weaknesses and strengths of others, what I mean is, we have to seriously try to pop holes in that suggested line up and we can do that with any team.

Let yourself go, our Muppet master has spoken and we are IN for Vidal and Hummels with Di Maria coming soon....I can feel it.

Pogba linked with PSG again for €75m. If that goes through we can basically kiss any Vidal deal goodbye.

I hope Pogba does go there. Better than City or Chelsea. In all likelihood I think they are selling both this summer. With 100m GBP+ and Marchisio they will be fine with another top addition.

How are PSG still even vaguely in this sort of market - didn't they get heavier penalties than City for FFP? And they just spent £50m on David Luihahahahaha (sorry can't wuote complete that sentence, but you get the point).

Because FFP works by fining clubs and is the irony of ironies?

The rumor is they wanna sell Verratti to Real for 40 million Euros and Marquinhos to Barca for Similar to finance a bid for Pogba in FFP or something.

Probably bullshit. Or we can help them by taking Verrati instead possibly ?

Got to draw the line somewhere.

And you know this because????? you read a newspaper saying we have 200 mil by any chance??

Money has been an issue for years, hence the Ronaldo money never being invested properly into the team, which is partly why we need such a drastic re-build.

Lack of proper investment (read as investment into CM) was more to do with Fergie than lack of money. We spent money on players as well as increasing the contracts of some players. When you look at it from the perspective of RVP being a luxury buy at the time having just bought Kagawa, then it seems like if Fergie really wanted to splash the cash on a particular player, money would have been made available - for some reason he didn't want to focus on CM and rather in other areas.

Not sure if anyone else has posted this but how reliable is Marcotti?
http://thepeoplesperson.com/2014/07...g-vidal-towards-manchester-united-ready-sell/

On ESPN he comes across as a guy that just has a lot of opinions based on what he is seeing in the news/marketplace. I can't remember him ever saying "my sources at so-and-so club tell me...". Nonetheless he seems to have a reasonable head on his shoulders when speaking about what might be going on with a possible transfer.

Yep SolidShite from now on apparently I hate to say it, I kind of like it. Suits me better posting under that name.
