Television Anyone recommend me any TV Shows?

Watched the first few episodes of Black Sails. Does it actually improve or does it stay a shit version of Deadwood with Pirates?

I watched the Kevin Can Wait pilot today, as a big Kevin James/King of the Queens fan I quite liked it. The TV/movie snobs will no doubt slaughter it though :p

He acts in the exact same way as he did as Doug (which is a plus for me, others hate it) - it's basically as if Doug Heffernan left Carrie, got new job, new familly and new friends.

Watched it this morning. Strange as it's pretty much a carbon copy of the King of Queens but without Leah Remini. I have high hopes for this series and might actually be going to a live taping of it in November while i'm in NY (that depends whether I can be bothered to trek to Long Island though).

Agree that the show will get panned though, and worringly the TV Execs don't have as much patience these days unfortunately. On a side note I recently went back and watched all the King of Queens episodes again. Such a great show.

The Good Place was interesting. A bit different take on paradise, with Kristen Bell and Ted Danson as leads. Though, just interesting, not really great yet.

Finished the first season and I thought it was very good.
Not your normal Heaven and Hell , angels and demons stuff.
I think defiantly worth a watch.

Season 2 started a few days ago btw. Watched the first episode last night and it pretty much just carries on from where it left off, an entertaining 40 minutes.

I thought Lucifer was terrible. Just another boring procedural. Actor that plays the devil is fine I guess, but this could've been so much better.

Just finished Curb Your Enthusiasm. If you're looking for a comedy then I highly recommend it. Some of the characters and situations are just gold.

It couldn't. You were right the first time. It's a boring procedural that seems like it was cooked up at the very end of an all night pitch meeting when everyone just wanted to go home. "The Devil solves crimes with a sexy LAPD sidekick!...Whose buying the coke?"

It's a punchline in a 30 Rock bit that somehow got commissioned.

Also, after about 3 episodes his insistence on delivering every line like its a witty comeback to a dirty joke in a gay bar, becomes excruciating.

Van Helsing, Macgyver and Lethal Weapon getting proper slaughtered by the critics. You just knew that they would be shit.

Quarry is the only one of the new shows worth a damn, actually that show is quality.

Also I see that the Exorcist is getting some good reviews. Currently just the pilot available, will check it out.

Well, when it was first announced, it was supposed to be about Neil Gaiman's character from The Sandman (and later Carey's Lucifer), and safe to say, that one is nothing like this. That excited some of us a bit. :)
Being on Fox, it was never going to be a faithful adaptation. That being said, I've grown to like Lucifer for what it is, and I generally really hate procedurals. But Tom Ellis carries the show as the lead and the show has a sense of humor that makes it easy to watch. Also, the second half of the first season was stronger as the quality of writing improved and it stepped away a bit from being procedural-heavy.

Yup, I liked the pilot.

This clip putting the John Williams Superman score into Supergirl is awesome. That score makes my eyes watery for some reason.

I haven't watched Supergirl. Any good?

I watched all 3 and as you said, they were expectedly bad. Lethal Weapon at least had some funny moments and I'll keep watching it for a bit longer but Macgyver and Van Helsing especially are simply awful.

Wish The Newsroom lasted longer. The political correctness of it could get extreme but I absolutely love Aaron Sorkin. I see that he's adapting A Few Good Men for TV

Last clip is brilliant

I won't start a rant but I think the show pretty much peaked with that opening scene.

Also using Fix You as a closing theme was a just an incredible dated banality in 2012.

But still:

lol Mockers still banging on about that Jeff entrance. Never gets old.

I'd say it was all about the coke fuelled years with Sorkin, but he wrote some good stuff without coke, but that's film, not tv, even in shorter form, where he oversees so much, especially the writing. His credits from 98-02 were bonkers, probably circa 120 episodes, peaking at about 40 a year in 99 probably.

Thanks for the recommendations. Will definitely give it a watch. Looking forward to it now!
Absolutely watch it, the hype is massive. I personally did not enjoy it, didn't hate it but I think it's cliched and overrated. Does have some redeeming qualities, though.

Am up to episode 4 and loving it so far. Does feel like stepping back in time which is great as I loved the Goonies and films like that from back in the day.

Did Newsroom have a proper finish? Might give it a bash.
The second season wasn't as bad as the first one but I kinda lost interest in it as it was a fun show to 'hate watch' because of it's bad elements, when it turned into a completely average show it stopped being fun.

Yeah, I just stopped watching, very quickly. And seems it never really turned it around.

Not sure why I hold things back so much, but on top of binging the OJ Show and Mr Robot season 2 last week, I did Fargo season 2 this week, it's nice to have free time. Fargo is tremendous, maybe Netflix really has killed the weekly thing, I watch nothing on a weekly basis anymore, maybe except Game of Thrones(though even then I can end up episodes behind) and the odd British show for no reason really.

Not sure what I've got lined up next, apparently Leftovers found it's footing, so maybe I'll give that a whirl.

Yeah that was one of the things I enjoyed about it. It does a very good job of setting the mood/tone. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the second half of the season when you finish.

Leftovers' good.

I kinda like and don't like the whole Netflix binge era, on one hand I enjoy binge watching stuff like anime/comedy but with drama I kinda enjoy letting the episodes sink in for a week.

I don't think I would have enjoyed Mad Men or season one of True Detective as much if I didn't get to think about the episodes for a while.

I've been meaning to watch the latest seasons of House of Cards and Narcos but I find it a bit daunting knowing that the whole season is already out and that the net is littered with spoilers.

It's nice knowing that today for an example that a new episode of Atlanta is out that I can really watch and soak in.

I feel the same way about binging. While it's nice to have the option to run through seasons at will, it sometimes makes the overall viewing experience worse. Like you said, you don't get to think about a particular episode for a while. Also, for most shows, their flaws become more apparent when you binge through them as you start to see repetitive patterns in writing, character arcs and plotlines.

Seen No Tomorrow pilot today. Cute romantic comedy, but I'll be massively disappointed if there is no meteoric apocalypse that will wipe us all out in the eight months.

Out of new ones, liked Son of Zorn, it was funny. At least Zorn is, the actual son is kinda lame. And without checking, would say he's also Michael Cera's brother. Don't really like much Designated Survivor. Interesting premise, and there will be ongoing mystery with who did the attack, but the actual stuff so far feels so banal and boring and predictable.

Well, the lad is not Michael Cera's brother. He's actually a 34-year-old who's been around for a long time. And unfortunately, reason he can play 17-year-old in Son of Zorn is because of some nasty disease that stunted his growth.
