Antony | On loan to Real Betis

This is a player that you genuinely wish will do well elsewhere. Compared to Rashford, Sancho etc no one can doubt his work rate, it's just frustrating for himself and fans that he's held back by physical limitations. Just not quick enough, or strong enough for the Premier League. The hate that his price tag has given him is absurd.
Agree with all of this

Can't wait for us to somehow find a way of buying him back for 100mil.

Great loan spell so far. Hope it continues

He's literally doing the same thing as he was here only somehow getting more space to doit
This exactly, he doesnt get this much time or space in the prem. The guy is really good at doing a couple of things, and really bad at doing anything more. He will get found out over there too.

I'm starting to think that we might be the problem.

And you'd be thinking wrong.
It's freaking conference league.
Rasmus will be banging braces and hattticks there.

The media spin around players that leave us is getting beyond a joke now. We are used for clicks, engagement, talking topics, fan debates, drama, the list is endless. All big media outlets know what they're doing and it's becoming so tiresome.

I'm all for our loanees having a good time at their new clubs because it obviously raises their value for a future sale, especially Antony, but this is just complete nonsense.

I watched the game and there was nothing about his performance that stood out at all. He had a good shot on target that resulted in a goal for Betis but other that it was incredibly mediocre. The stats do not lie, and every single stat based site rated him a 6.5, which is about right. Just above average. The media won't tell you this though, this image of Antony is all over the socials this morning, followed by a multitude of rival fans jumping on the bandwagon spinning the same rhetoric "See, it's not the player's fault, it's Manchester United's" which is just complete nonsense.

We all know that there has been a serious attitude and poisonous attitude at the club, it's been there for years and it goes all the way back to the days of Mou, in fact that's where it began. But the complete nonsense that is drivelled online about how 'X' player turns into a world beater once they leave United is complete and utter, waffle.

Sancho in his last 10 apps (707 mins) has 1 goal and 1 assist... that's in all comps, in a Chelsea team that's clearly playing a lot better than we are this season too. What a star he is.

McTominay in his last 10 apps (987 mins) has 1 goal and 2 assists, in all comps, in a much worse league to which we'd all agree, in a team that again is lot more cohesive than ours currently is. What a big miss he is.

Martial in his last 10 apps (786 mins) has 3 goals and 1 assist, in all comps, in a genuine farmers league, in a team that is one of the top teams in said farmers league. Such a shame we let him leave, I'd love his impact at United right now..

You get my point with this, too many times all over social media I'm seeing that we ruin players, they're always better when they leave etc, and it's just not true. The fact of the matter is, we as United fans big up every single player that we have, to the point where they're perceived as complete superstars to the outside looking in, when in fact, it's really not the case.

If Rashford goes and scores a hattrick on his Villa debut, best believe the media will have a frenzy over it. It will be feeding time for them, and the people they'll look to feed off is United fans and the club as a whole. If Rashford scores a hattrick then great for him, and even better for us as hopefully he does enough for them to sign him. He could score back to back hattricks, I STILL WOULD NOT WANT HIM AT MANCHESTER UNITED. He hasn't been that player for us for 2.5+yrs, why on earth would we want him back? It's complete nonsense, and I'm sick to the back teeth of it.

Great post.

I’m not totally convinced by those that think Antony wasn’t able to cope physically with the league. Amad has similar speed and slighter frame yet is excelling in the league.

The issues a vast majority of our signings have is the mental side of things. They aren’t cut out for the mighty scrutiny that’s involved in playing for the biggest club in the world. You can see players crumble before our eyes. I think that’s also Holland’s issue. SAF always picked players with the correct mental attributes to cope with the demands

Agreed 100%

He always gives it his all so even though he isn't what we need you can't question his attitude.

Hopefully he keeps doing well and attracts more interest.

Antony finding the difference in getting away from a toxic fanbase. The players are not the problem.

Nonsense, he just couldn't handle the pressure at a huge club.

Plenty of decent players couldn't before him either, even under Fergie. Remember Forlan? Tim Howard was a really good keeper but a bag of nerves at United.

Real Madrid have had no problems winning everything in the last 10 years with the most brutal fanbase in the world.

Complete and utter drivel. This mentality is what protects the players and creates a safe space of poor attitude and poor performances.

His goal last night is nothing we haven't seen before. He's a one trick pony and is in a much worse league. He attempted that move what feels like hundreds of times for us, and it very rarely, if at all, came off, because Premier League defenders will not allow you to perform your 'special move' constantly.

I always think of Gary Birtles when this comes up, he scored 6 goals in 9 games for forest in the 81 season, moved to us, didn't score a single goal in the league, 25 games and no goals. Just wasn't a player that could cope with it all.

He just didn't have what it takes to make it at United, doesn't mean he's a shit player or a nothing player. However, even if he wins player of the season in La Liga, there would be no point bringing him back at United. He just won't make it here, think the pressure is too much. Was completely shot of confidence, and also isn't the smartest player on the field. Tactics didn't really suit him, he is not an isolation winger.

Don't think it has anything to do with being too weak or slow, which I think is a bit of a myth here anyway.

Spot on. I actually had to stick the Sancho and McT threads on ignore because of how hysterical they had become.

I mean he tried that exact same thing with us constantly except in the Prem you'll be closed down in that scenario.

I want him to play well enough that someone would buy him for good money but not well enough that the football brains at United think they missed a trick with him.

I agree. He’s just not suited to the PL.

He clearly puts in the effort.

What it also shows is how savvy you need to be in scouting players from other leagues.

Unfortunately United have been far too reactive in the market, and seem to jump into transfers without the due diligence. Although, with Antony, some of our scouts (apparently) rated him as a £20m player. Which is probably about right.

Is anyone actually watching his games? He scored against Arsenal on his first game for us, we know he’s capable on his left foot. The man of the match award is voted for by fans I believe, so it’s not really an accurate reflection of how he played.

I’d be delighted if we can somehow salvage £25 million back.

He's lacking in too many areas to make it at the top level.

It's fine to be one footed if you can make up for it in other areas.

He just had too many deficiencies in his game.

He's quick enough but not rapid, he is good technically but not amazing and he has a good shot but that's it. He's an average winger who got promoted above his level. PL full backs are too good for him unfortunately. He'll be fine in Holland or Spain or Italy or France.

It's complete madness that ETH had coached him for a few years and still spent 90m on him.

This will never be excusable. Even if he was half the price, I don't get how he didn't spot how limited he was and how badly he'd struggle in the PL. Ten Hag should be in jail for this crime alone.

He had like 5 seconds to turn with nobody near him and he scores with his left in the far corner.
Typical goal for him and a goal he won't score in the Premier League ever again, because every defender knows his one trick now.
Hopefully he'll score a few more in the freaking CONFERENCE LEAGUE and someone will buy him.

This is not just a club problem either... its fans too. We create alot of noise during a transfer window, get a shiny toy and go quiet.

How many times have fans been up in arms about us not signing the popular player at the time?

Now the club are taking their time in signings, fans are having a pop because we didnt want to spend 10m on a 4 month loan for Tel.

It is very hard to comprehend how a supposedly top manager cannot make the difference between the Eredivisie and the PL. If he did not know Antony so well, it would have been somewhat excusable, he mad a mistake, made a bad judgement on a 90m player, but having him at Ajax, seeing him every day and thinking he would make in the PL is just criminal.
Also, who sanctioned the transfer is also guilty, the reason we are where we are is because we have transferred expensive players without knowing their strong foot. It is hard to believe anyone scouted Antony before ETH came, it was a snap call and an stupid one.

Only it's not the same because Betis push their FB on the overlap? The entire reason he can get space is because your markers will either cross/need to switch. This doesn't mean he is good enough but United have really fallen off a cliff tactically in terms of workrate and basic overloads on the right hand side, essentially since AWB was signed.

There's an article which stated Uniteds scouting team valued Antony at £20-30m so yes we did scout him

ETH wasn't a good judge of player unfortunately.
Amad is obviously more talented and he didn't play him.

I think he was in a state of panic after losing first two games to smaller teams.

Antony would've been a fine purchase if he was 30m max.

I bet Fergie would've never signed him though.

It's less him not being able to handle the pressure, if anything he seems like he has the mentality to handle the pressure. Its just a simple fact that the league is quicker and more physical than other leagues and he could not make that step. Technically he still kept his good touch and control of the ball in tight spaces. He just didn't have that extra bit of physicality needed as well as not really being a creative, unpick the lock type of player. La liga seems well suited for him. Not every player who moves to the premier league fails because of mentality.
