Antony | On loan to Real Betis

The media spin around players that leave us is getting beyond a joke now. We are used for clicks, engagement, talking topics, fan debates, drama, the list is endless. All big media outlets know what they're doing and it's becoming so tiresome.

I'm all for our loanees having a good time at their new clubs because it obviously raises their value for a future sale, especially Antony, but this is just complete nonsense.

I watched the game and there was nothing about his performance that stood out at all. He had a good shot on target that resulted in a goal for Betis but other that it was incredibly mediocre. The stats do not lie, and every single stat based site rated him a 6.5, which is about right. Just above average. The media won't tell you this though, this image of Antony is all over the socials this morning, followed by a multitude of rival fans jumping on the bandwagon spinning the same rhetoric "See, it's not the player's fault, it's Manchester United's" which is just complete nonsense.

We all know that there has been a serious attitude and poisonous attitude at the club, it's been there for years and it goes all the way back to the days of Mou, in fact that's where it began. But the complete nonsense that is drivelled online about how 'X' player turns into a world beater once they leave United is complete and utter, waffle.

Sancho in his last 10 apps (707 mins) has 1 goal and 1 assist... that's in all comps, in a Chelsea team that's clearly playing a lot better than we are this season too. What a star he is.

McTominay in his last 10 apps (987 mins) has 1 goal and 2 assists, in all comps, in a much worse league to which we'd all agree, in a team that again is lot more cohesive than ours currently is. What a big miss he is.

Martial in his last 10 apps (786 mins) has 3 goals and 1 assist, in all comps, in a genuine farmers league, in a team that is one of the top teams in said farmers league. Such a shame we let him leave, I'd love his impact at United right now..

You get my point with this, too many times all over social media I'm seeing that we ruin players, they're always better when they leave etc, and it's just not true. The fact of the matter is, we as United fans big up every single player that we have, to the point where they're perceived as complete superstars to the outside looking in, when in fact, it's really not the case.

If Rashford goes and scores a hattrick on his Villa debut, best believe the media will have a frenzy over it. It will be feeding time for them, and the people they'll look to feed off is United fans and the club as a whole. If Rashford scores a hattrick then great for him, and even better for us as hopefully he does enough for them to sign him. He could score back to back hattricks, I STILL WOULD NOT WANT HIM AT MANCHESTER UNITED. He hasn't been that player for us for 2.5+yrs, why on earth would we want him back? It's complete nonsense, and I'm sick to the back teeth of it.
If I could like this post again I would. Super post

He got his goal today and was a decent outlet on the right but he had his usual brain farts in the final third. He's not a clever player.
But I'll be happy for him if he does well and hopefully we can get a decent enough fee for him in the summer

While it’s true. I’m happy for McTominay and to be fair there hasn’t been that much media about him. Romano tweeting about Antony is funny as he doesn’t do it about other teams however I’m also pleased for him to do well.
But the point is valid, almost all pundits and media like to take a digg at United. Who even they root for.

Which also hides a bit the fact that out business in the last 5 or 6 years has been atrocious (fees, culture, quality of players, coaches, and the rest).

Oh yeah the media is a cancer when it comes to United. Obsessed with click bait headlines. It shouldn’t be used to not say players are doing well though either on loan or when left.

Thrilled he is doing well there. Hopefully Betis come with a good bid in the summer.
No bid, unfortunately. He is not good enough. They have no cash. They try to force deals for long time and for the minimum possible. They might try to work on a loan, with some 10 or 15 million to pay in the end. Nothing north of this, for sure.

I think Romano is paid by agents for PR. Which makes sense when you think about it.

It necessarily, it could just mean he can’t handle the pace of the PL but can do it Spain. Not the first won’t be the last.
La Liga is a decent league. I do think the bottom teams are very weak but the standard is generally very high. I’m not I buy into that league being so different to the PL.

However I guess my point isn’t really specific to Antony, it’s that we’ve got a very interesting situation now with Antony, Rashford, Sancho. It will raise questions internally if all have done well come seasons end, particularly the two playing in the same league as us.

Well I'm pretty confident that Marcus and Sancho won't have pulled up any trees by June but even if they do, I'm not sure what questions are to be answered. All got lots of playing time, in their preferred position and others, lots of backing when things weren't going well, lots of patience in the face of dogshit output.....if we've been remiss, I personally can't see where.

I agree they will unlikely do that but, Rashford in particular, if he has a storming end to the season and we’ve got attackers struggling to get to 5 goals or so, I think we have to ask ourselves what went wrong here to create the situation (especially as with Rashford he used to be a hard worker and then gradually I guess gave up).

The pace is lower than the PL and there isn’t the same pressure as at a club like United.

You got a lot of credit for this post, but just check the Leicester post match discussion and the Dorgu thread and you’ll see fans (and media for that matter), tend to get a little overexcited about new signings at clubs.
You’d think reading those threads Dorgu was brilliant, but those same ratings sites have him down as one of the worst players on the pitch.

He’s been on that slippy slope for several years. It’s not a new thing with him.
My personal opinion is that we overpay young players too soon. Maybe in fear they walk elsewhere like Germany to get minutes and put themselves in s good shop window.
Egos get out of control and many have poor agent representation to tell them to calm down.
Throw social media on the fire, creating your own marketing brands, outside influences. The days if being a Gary Neville type and sacrificing lots for a football career are gone.
In Rashfords specific case I also think that he mentally changed after his back injury. He was never the same player despite that 1 good season perhaps playing on adrenaline

ETH used his own sons analyst data and his friends agency for some of the deals and their associated scouting network outside the clubs.
ETH really grabbed cash for himself and his crew / family / friends. Corrupt as it gets.

Should be looked into signing various players to SEG then the club pursued deals with. Also rumours that a decent percentage of Anthony's transfer was given to the agency. I think fans are naive to assume there's not behind closed doors deals and some corruption with many clubs.

100% agree re overpaying - that is the real legacy of the Woodward years, trying to fight back to the top by overpaying. Immediately you start to attract the wrong characters i.e. Pogba, who wanted Real but they would not pay what we would, Cavani who literally held out for Atleti until the last minute, Sanchez...and then for younger guys it just ruins any drive they had.

My only unknown with Rashford is re the shoulder injury, I think there might be an issue with whoever runs our performance side/rehab as he bulked up post shoulder and that's what killed his acceleration in my opinion. That's not to say he's covered himself in glory or his time is not done here, but I have a suspicion he might look a lot slimmer towards the end of the season with Villa and have a late flurry of form.

Nice finish for his goal yesterday. He's not worth 80m, but nowhere near as bad as he looked at Utd at times.

Utd should have keep ETH till the summer, tried to get value from the signings green lighted under him. Including Anthony.

If ETH couldn’t get any value out of him in two years, what’s another six months of his management going to achieve?

He started off fairly promising for us, until defenders figured out all they need to do is stop his left foot.

The almost braindead mass running for 90+ minutes in the premier league should be taken into consideration more when signing players.

Antony should never really be in the discussion for worst player etc.

But between United and the Premier League they really did make him look awful.

Wouldn’t imagine Betis have lots of funds to spend on him.
Yeag I guess so but maybe someone else in Spain will like him and try to sign him. If not, maybe we can re-up with Betis in the summer for a full season loan on better terms (loan fee, 100% salary coverage).

Thrilled he is doing well there. Hopefully Betis come with a good bid in the summer.
La Liga clubs don't usually spend much money nowadays. If he performs really well, Atletico or Villarreal might come for him, but I doubt it. In my opinion, Italy and France are much more likely destinations

I think we're making this way too complex: he wasn't a superstar in the making, was never worth anything approaching the fee we paid, and was never going to make it in the PL given his obvious limitations...but he has decent to good technical ability and seems to put in the effort in, so he might do pretty well in La Liga or back in the Eredivisie. We need to make peace with that, recognise his career with us is over and hope we can broker a reasonable deal in the summer.
