Antony | On loan to Real Betis

This insane. The least favourite? We've had fecking rapists, racists, players who didn't respect the badge, and egotistical maniace who didn't give an actual shit and you hate him??
Yeah but he did a spin once, mate.

And 50+ terrible performances for the club while being paid £10.4 million per year
A small point but the earned about a third of that given he hit no bonuses (estimate for his salary when he was going to be loaned before was £70k a week).

A change of scenery can give anyone a boost. And said scenery being an inferior league also helps of course.

That being said, one must wonder how gloomy our club is behind the scenes.
This should be a serious concern. So many players just don’t seem in the right place, mentally, at United. Either we’ve been unlucky enough to only sign mentally weak footballers, or there’s a seriously bad working atmosphere at the club.

We need to recoup some of his fee. He's just not cut out for this league and maybe the pressure of a big high profile club. Hopefully one of the bigger boys with money will come knocking if he continues to do well. Atletico Madrid could do with some more firepower and they tend to pay big bucks at times.

??? He literally had to be taken out of the United squad for weeks and was dropped by Brazil because of allegations of physical assault made by several women

Good for him. Hopefully some one richer than Betis will come in and bid around 40m for him in the summer.

Go Antony!

Allegations that the Brazilian police investigated and concluded there were no charges to be made against him

Actually seems like a decent performance. Still very much the same player here, but he's far less isolated in that set-up it seems.

He needs players around him to link up with, or that will overlap/create space for him. Which makes him a luxury player in some sense.

People underestimate how much of a difference confidence can make. Some players can take the backlash and continue to perform. But others need confidence.

I’m not shocked it’s working out better for him in La Liga, it logically makes sense. I wish him nothing but good luck personally, bitterness towards Antony of all people is bloody bizarre.

Said it time and time again, was obvious he’d do well.
Most bizarrely treated United player I can recall.
Had a good first season, helping us to 3rd and a cup, scoring some big goals against some good teams. Second season ruined by the allegations, and on his return seemed cast aside with fans desperate to turn him into a meme. Finished last season looking ok too with some important goals such as v Liverpool in his cameos.

Just a miles better player than the 3 we start up top now Amad is out, makes no sense to me, never will. Has some balls about him too, keeps possession.

I remember that first season he was often our outball when our back 4 was under pressure, they knew he could keep it under pressure, these days (like last night), we give it Dalot instead or twat it aimlessly up field. It’s why we immediately look better when Amad plays at wingback too.
ETH suffered for it last season I thought, we instantly looked shitter without that outball.

Couldnt do it here with all the shit around him, but frankly, he has a lot more qualities than most of our players.

I think he did well when he come on under Amorim as well.

That miss though in his last game maybe summed it up. A pro footballer doesn’t miss that unless something else is going on; his confidence must have been completely shot.

Hope he does well over there.

Also it's less pressure really, they didn't pay 100m for him and he's not even expected to continue on this note.
It's like playing in the park compared to the United situation were he's a mega millions signing were anything short of the level of a player like Vini for the money we pay would be considered a failure.

Well I mean at the moment it looks like everyone not on the playing side has got their job on the line and have basically been told to shut up about it until that meeting. So I imagine it's just a bad and negative vibe everywhere.

He always worked hard when he came for us but just wasn't able to adapt to the PL. The Spanish or Italian league will be perfect for him.

I dont know why people are so bitter he's doing great. Other than the fact being so bitter about other people's success is never a good thing, his stock is rising with every performance which is great for us as far as i'm concerned because it gives us a chance of recouping something meaningful from the great mistake we made when we signed him.

He looks a different player. It goes to show what some confidence will do for you, and something everyone should bear in mind during our current spell. It does also go to show how we ruin players with the expectation of the shirt though.

Some major rewriting of history here. He started off OK but was soon found out. 4 goals and 2 assists from 25 games in his 'good' first season. One paced, one footed, one shot. Couldnt beat a player and always cut back inside. Did occasionally win possession but often then lost it as he'd tried to dribbe off with the ball and was regularly wrestled off the ball as he is not good at protecting the ball. His Ajax highlights involved lots of silly flicks and tricks. Ajax and Dutch media were amazed/ laughing when we signed him for the fee, but even at half the money he was not good enough.

Yeah, absolutely. The better he performs, the higher the chance we're able to find an interested buyer for him at a decent enough fee. I don't think he has the tools to succeed in the PL, but he wouldn't be the first or last player where this applies. Hope we get an acceptable offer for him in the summer.

Agree with all of this.

I also think Amorim gave up on him too quickly after some decent sub cameos as a wingback. He’s always been a good defender so should be well suited to that position. Although I suspect Amorim’s hand was forced by our dire financial straits.

I don't agree with the whole playing in a inferior league thing. He's more or less the same player but the players around him are more cohesive. A role player can be a superstar in the right system

It's just a couple of long range goals guys. Stop worrying that we've made a mistake.

Those goals will obviously stop happening because no player just keeps slapping them in from distance.

If anything long term it's the worst thing that can happen. Because with Antony we know that a couple going in means shooting from 30 yards five times a game is now inevitable.

Why can’t we just accept the fact that he is playing well now? Let’s be honest, we’d not half as good as Real Betis with our current squad

Meme or not he's doing well now and driving big viewership numbers to Betis highlights on YouTube. Bodes well for both the player and us.

100%.
He wasn't great in the Dutch league apparently so it's madness we even signed him.

Nobody is paying £50m for him. Because most football club’s staff have memories that span beyond three games.
And only the very top clubs in La Liga could afford to pay that for him. And even they are no longer in a position to take a risk like that on a player who already failed at a big cub.

Might get a ~ £25m fee in the summer if we are lucky.

At least he is showing he can be half decent in Spain
