I remember being called out last season when I said that I genuinely didn't understand one iota of this signing. He wasn't special at Ajax, he never showed the level that is required to excel in the Eredivisie, let alone the Premier League. I was criticized for a biased view because of being a Feyenoord fan, but everyone viewing the Eredivisie regularly knew this. And we paid 85 million pounds for a player that is bang average for Dutch league standards and straight out disappointing on Premier League levels.

I feel like a broken record saying this but Ten Haag deserves sacking for signing him alone. It beggars belief how shite he is and as you said his numbers in a far weaker league didn't scream world class player.

He's been a disastrous signing. It's actually impressive that we've spent close to a billion quid over the last decade and ended up with our current squad.

That Doku incident was so embarassing. He looked like what I used to do in U-12 games when we were losing 10-0.

I was wrong about this guy. I knew he wouldn't be world class, but always thought he'd come good and be a decent enough option, but even the likes of Leon Bailey and Moussa Diaby are much better. I think Antony works much harder than both of them, but ultimately he is a winger and should be judged on his offensive ability and output, and I don't think he is anywhere near the level required. His price was unbelievable, and it is so annoying how our rivals are buying players that obviously will improve them, or any team for that matter, while we consistently overpay for players that won't improve us, and in some cases, make us worse. Sad times.

Debatable?
My reaction was more about how futile it is to praise an attacking player's work rate and defensive game, when they are producing absolutely nothing in terms of goals and assists. James and Antony were both as bad as eachother, but at least James didn't cost the Earth.

He is the best rw out of a list of bad rw. If the others are 3/10 right wingers he is a 4/10 winger.
Disagree a fit Amad is twice the player he is and a firing Sancho that’s not sulking has far more to offer than Antony, no elite pace, no end product, no goals, no assists biggest mistake ETH made was to empower his signings with a guaranteed position, high wages and an air of superiority that reeked of “now we are here we’ll fix everything”

They all had it and only Martinez delivered for one season then a pay rise was discussed ? Why ? He did his job that’s all, he’s not worth £200k per week, nor is Antony.

This created the divide in the squad, I can remember Antony once looking at Maguire like he was a pub league player, Maguire no Baresi but he’s a top 8 PL CB when he’s playing well and that’s something Antony will never be. Personally I’d support ETH to be given time however his transfers are alone reason for dismissal;

L Martinez 8/10 - Good Signing but now rushed back - over paid by £10m
Casemiro 7.5/10 - Good signing first season but wages and transfer fee too high
Overpaid by £20m based on age
T Mallacia 5/10 - Average player right fee paid but not a great signing
C Eriksen - 7/10 Good signing 3 year contract on a free but big wages
Antony - 2.5/10 worst signing in PL history £82m over paid by £45m wages of 200k are £125k per week too much, Greenwood who will never play for the club again was on 75k per week and 4 times the player and probably only twice the scumbag.

S Amrabat - Loan view to buy £28m could have bought this year for £20m about overpaid due to our finances too early to score but currently 5/10
M Mount - 4/10 looks a shadow of the player , 12 months left on contract should have paid £35m max overpaid by £20m and £100k per week in wages.
R Hojlund 5.5/10 looks promising but 0 goals in 7 PL, yes no service but he’s missed 3-4 chances he should score £65m -£75m transfer overpaid by £25m
A Onana 6/10 poor start, good in last 3 games, overpaid by 10M should have paid £40m
S Reguilon - Loan 6/10 shows promise but not united standard
Bayinder - not even used £5m when we had Kovar who would have been a better number 2 and also brought up through academy

Eric signed a whole team and overspent by £140-150m most of that on Antony, that gross misconduct of resources would have bought you a Harry Kane or V Osimhen and a young creative midfield playmaker like E Le Fey, F Wirtz, R Gravenberch, N Gonzalez, or X Simmons. Swap Antony for Villa M Diaby, swap Mount for Maddison and that squad would have been nailed on top 3.

Daniel James was twice the player for man united, had elite level pace unlike Antony who can’t beat a man, we made profit on Daniel Janes, a rarity of transfers at this club plus he didn’t consistently cut in and blast the ball over the goal, enfact right now I’d swap James for Antony in a heartbeat!

Overspending isn't on Ten Hag. He doesn't do the negotiations does he?

Smells so much like a dodgy agent sharing deal with ETH.
Worst ever prem signing.
Players over your park who are better. I wish I was joking.

The agenda posting here is ridiculous really. Guy didn’t even play for 5 minutes. Give it a rest!

Can't believe I scrolled past two pages of angry post-match comments before I read one like this that I could somewhat relate to.

Wtf? this kind of shit has to be unique to the caf. I can't imagine going on an Everton forum after they lost to Liverpool and seeing their fans saying "I would've loved it if Van Dijk chinned one of our players. Would've served him right for doing a nasty challenge. What does he think this is, a local derby or something?!"

Sickening tbh.The hate he’s given is surely on another level. Sancho has been awful for us for longer but look at the difference b/w the two threads.

You're right, he's been great up until this point.

Hasn't scored in the league IN A YEAR.

Going on strike to force through his transfer should have rang alarm bells. Ten Hag must have known his temperament before signing him.

Absolute disgrace to the Utd shirt.

Some of you will look back and be embarrassed by your posts in this thread today.

Fine, he's not all he was cracked up to be (we told you then but you convinced yourselves he would come good), but getting mad at a player for showing some emotion when his team was getting battered by their bitter rivals at home?

What was he supposed to do? Take it meekly like the rest of our lot?

We moan here all week about players not caring, not showing passion, not playing for the badge, and you will turn on someone that at least showed some fire today?

His thread shouldn't even be bumped today given how few minutes he had to impact anything.
I'm sorry but this is a load of rubbish. Getting subbed on and almost getting sent off within 5 minutes isn't passion or fire, it's just idiocy. He's lucky that Doku reacted the way he did because it could have easily been a red card.

A horrifying signing. The YouTube videos don’t show much potential but we had reason to believe that ETH knew what he was doing with this signing, but it’s clear now that he did not. It’s also clear that we are stuck with Antony for the duration of his contract.

Pellistri is no world beater but it’s time to give Facundo a proper run of starts and not just the two he got a month ago while Antony was on the hot seat due to nonsporting matters.

Probably the first player I've actually really disliked. Very lucky he wasn't sent off, must have got away with 4 or 5 similar incidents last season as well. Aside from the fact that he's absolutely useless, his attitude is clearly a massive issue so it makes Ten Hag desperately wanting him even more bizarre.

Embarrassing post.

How the feck is getting himself sent off (he should have been) going to help the team?

He doesn’t give a feck about the team, only himself.

Antony is clearly not an elite level player, maybe not even Premier League level...

However, I do think it's alarming that wingers so often seem to do terribly in this team. Sancho and (outside of his biannual good spells) Rashford also very rarely do much. I want to suggest it's something to do with the team set-up, but even in a terribly managed team, you'd expect these players to at least have semi-frequent good 'moments' even if they don't have the end product. But they really do seem to do nothing.

He may be poor, I'm actually joining that camp sooner rather than later, but he's still better than Bruno on the right. Dalot was regularly defending a two on one or even three on one, also forcing Maguire out of position. One thing you can't blame Antony for is his defensive work.

Why is he not playing there then?

ETH either doesnt trust him, or he would rather push Bruno there so he can get our top goal scorer, McTominay into that 8/10 position.

Just another average player in a team full of average players, he doesn't get in any of the starting eleven of any team in the top six, an atrocious waste of money for which the manager is culpable.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think Diaby has as many goals and assists in the Premier League as Antony.

Diaby has been playing in the Premier League for just over 2 months.

I don't know, but it baffles my mind when managers start to play inferior players out of position and then superior players need to then play out of position to accomodate, causing two evils. Last match, McTominay was deployed as a ten, pushing Bruno back as an 8. Neither performed very well. Now, McTominay was in the team, as was Amrabat and Eriksen, pushing Bruno out wide. Replace Antony with McTominay, and the team is more balanced.

I just don't understand why managers do this. It hardly ever, ever work.

Agree. We are seeing a manager throwing things at the wall and hoping something sticks.

I just don’t know why ETH persists with him, he’s clearly unsuitable for the PL and the club.
Lack of options IMO. Greenwood was dickhead, Sancho is an idiot, Amad injured, Rashford cant play RW, Bruno is atrocious there

Feels like he's been very lucky to escape at least three red cards in his time here. Wish Casemiro had that kind of luck last year.

He's just a one trick pony and his trick rarely works so much so that he rarely tries the trick anymore..so now he's just a pony.

The person that did the deal for his transfer price should have a statue erected in his honour. Top class salesman.

Think a big deal is made about how Antony reacts and how Bruno makes faces or waves his arms. Everyone on some kind of moral high horse all the time. We are way too critical of our players over minor stuff.

I think captaincy is talked about way too much by pundits like Keane, but I do think there is something in one of your senior players being very visibly petulant. I do think Fernandes being a calm head would be beneficial to the team, and his acting out when losing (being a bad loser isn't necessarily a bad thing) kind of makes the whole team act up / give up in games like this.

Yeah. I think if you’re going to sign an attacker from the eredevisie they need to be absolutely dominating it beforehand. Antony’s stats were very average there.

I think if you were to choose one word to sum up ten Hag so far for us it’s ‘naive’.
He totally underestimated the league, both in big games and transfers.

Yes, the captain can motivate the team, but it is not a given. Different players can step up and become the leader. The defense will have its own leaders who will organize, be vocal, motivate each other and things. The attackers can work together and be vocal. Not everything needs to flow through the captain.
