Seems to be one of those players where if you let them get into their favourable shooting position they will 90% score. Sick left foot.

I like him. Tenacious, good technique, creative, contributes defensively...I want him to start taking his fullback on a bit more but maybe that will come once he fully adjusts to the league.

Yeah could see tonight his confidence is growing, hopefully this will see him taking on players down the outside too.

he’s clearly been told to keep the skills down and keep it simple while he settles in.

Maybe they are wary of him being labelled a show pony / diver by the referees/media?

it could well be that his stamina isn’t quite adjusted yet, and simply hasn’t got the energy to burn his fullback. he’s doing a serious amount of leg work defensively, so his legs might be burning a little once he does get it in attack.

I do think it’s mainly just not being confident enough risk losing the ball and breaking down an attack. He’d rather keep the ball moving which is fine.

Anyway, everybody said he doesn’t score enough goals before he joined, 3 in 3 in the PL sure isn’t a bad way to start!

If he adds in his dribbling/skills to this goal threat, he’s going to be some player. I love him already

Counting his 2 games for Ajax, he's got 4 goals and 2 assists in 5 league matches so far this season.

For all the worry about his end product when we signed him, he's looked a constant goal threat for us on the right wing.

That's something we haven't had consistently since maybe Nani a decade. The fact that he has yet to fully acclimate to the league yet, and that we're in the early stages of Ten Hag ball, makes me feel like he could end up being a special player for us moving forward.

He's only 22 ffs and he already ticks all the boxes skill/technical ability wise while his workrate has been one of his best attributes at the same time. Gonna be something to watch when he puts it all together the more experience he gets.

The thing is, is that most of his goal threats have been from shots outside the box i.e low probability chances. He's just been incredible efficient with the tap ins he's had.

Once we start dominating more possession and aren't so porous through the middle, he can play higher up the pitch and end up in the box more for crosses, back post chances etc.

Arjen Robben was one dimensional but yet defenders couldn't stop him. Some players are just like that. I agree that he needs to attack space more. Currently he doesn't. If he can develop power and speed he will be fine.
Interesting to hear ETH pick up on this in his post match interview. You need to do both to be a world class wide player which we hope Antony can be. Either way 3 in 3 is a great return for the boy.

Add unpredictability/going on the outside and he’s a very exciting player indeed.

I love his confidence and aggression. It’s almost completely opposite to Rashy. I just wish he dribbles past players more.

Those doubted his speed ? he seems rapid off the ball the first goal exemplified this.

What Antony has the ability to do is not having to take on his man directly by squaring them up directly but to utilise the movement from the channels to the inside forward role progressively. Robben did this consistently with ease and if you focus on the detail, Ajren approaches the defender what looks direct but is really at a slight angle to where his body can open up either going inside or the outside with relative ease without having to shift the ball dynamically with his feet. It's not so much what the feet does but it's an angle that limits the fullbacks chance to tackle.

Grealish and Saka continually use this running style which is why neither have great pace but are a threat to defences prior. Antony could become a star if he can offer this aspect in his play.

What did he say exactly as haven't seen it

This summer there were people who clearly hadn’t seen him going on about how Luis Diaz was so much better etc. very premature.

He plays rather conservative since he joined, maybe to build up confidence and avoid mistakes. Once he takes on players and is more present in our play, he will show a side we have not seen yet

I agree. He is a better finisher than I thought although it could be a purple patch. That said I like that he gets into shooting positions. Would like to see him attack his fullback as he seems a bit afraid at the minute.

He's got the big balls needed to succeed at a club like ours. Antony Montana. Sniper. Head shot.

I agree with this. I'm surprised not to see him dribbling more. However, I guess we're at the keep the ball stage of things with Ten Hag. Maybe Erik is just trying to encourage the XI to recycle possession and so Antony prefers to keep it simple. I've noticed Rashford also choosing to try 1-2s instead of running with the ball, it could be an instruction.

However, the key thing is Antony has shown himself to be ice cold in front of goal. As long as that carries on I can live with him not trying to beat his man. :p

Same here.

I can't wait for the team to improve in possession and move the ball around quickly, once we do that, hopefully we can put him in 1v1 situations against the fullback more often. Right now, counter attacks aside, we don't move the ball quick enough, which is why when our wingers get the ball, they're already double teamed.
That's a problem with the 4231 that we play, we aren't able to overload the wings.
a 433 will enable us to have the RB RW and RCM close to each other interchanging passes and creating 1v1's for our wingers to take advantage.

He has a brain! something half the squad has been missing in previous seasons.

At times you want him to just take on the entire defence, but it appears he knows when to keep possession and play simple. Good signing! (so far)

One thing to mention, we were heavily linked with Darwin Nunez but weren’t willing to go as high as Liverpool did with the asking fee.

We effectively signed Antony instead of Nunez. That’s a huge win in itself.

Posts about him not dribbling more are strange. When he's in situation where he cant dribble or doesnt have space he doesnt do it. He cant do it for the sake of it and in every situation.

Arsenal, City and Everton are impressive scalps. Probably already more of a big game player than Lukaku ever was for us.
Sort of easy to forget how difficult our opening fixture list has actually been, done remarkably well to get 15 of the last 18 available points.

I think Darwin (according to rumours) also demanded a higher salary to join us than Liverpool which would have made us an even bigger target for ridicule had he joined.

Yeah, it’s been grim. No light at the end of the tunnel either. Spurs, Chelsea and Newcastle up next. Then West Ham, who are hitting form at a bad time for us (as did Everton)

Just watching his goal again and love the determination and pace to get into the box in place for the pass.

Went up a level vs past performances I felt in the last game, aswell as an excellent finish!

Yep, read the play quickly and made a great forward run. People say he's not fast but his pace was impressive there. I guess he just picks/chooses when to use it.

Looks like he's already getting physically stronger to me. Also tried one or two dribbles that didn't come off so reined it in which I can understand. Pleased with what looks like steady progression and I think there's more to come.

Noticeable improvement in his work rate and tracking back , something ETH referenced after the game when he said Anthony knows he needed improvement in these areas and is working on it, looks to have a good attitude which of course should be a given in with any player but as we know here too well this is not always the case.

He had a really good opening 45 mins yesterday and another lovely goal. He doesn't squander possession much and drags in so many opposition players around him that he's excellent at creating space for others.

I think we'll see more of his skills as he settles, i like the fact that he's not all ego though, a simple pass to retain possession to him is preferable to trying to skin everyone all of the time and losing the ball. I think this is one of the reasons ETH likes him so much. Although we've seen he has a burst of pace in him and an excellent shot, the team build up play is his priority. I like him.

Yeah, came to post something like that. How swiftly he recognized the opportunity, and how intensely he went for the run really made that goal.

I find myself comparing him to Nani a lot. Both raw talents when they arrived, with bags of talent and perhaps a tendency to showboat a bit. Nani got four goals in his first season, and Antony is already on three. It's looking bright. It would be great if his attitude could rub off on Sancho a bit - similar technical abilities, but Antony seems miles ahead in application.

Antony has been the opposite of what I expected. I expected a player who was involved a lot, but lacking a bit in end-product - much of what we saw at Ajax. Instead we have got a player who for large part is quiet and then burst into life and score goals - a much more efficient player than I had dared to hope for.

could he be our Freddie Ljumberg?

One of these days he's going to dribble on the outside and leave four defenders stranded on the edge of the penalty area.

Could do with getting even more support from an overlapping full-back. That would allow for even more cutbacks or give him more space once he goes inside. Very threatening though and a good shot on him. Combine that with a great work ethic and you have a fan favourite on your hands.

He has world class shot technique. Rashy just smashes it full power, Ronaldo aswell. Martial has class but not as good as him.
Antony is the only one I fully trust will score in 1 on 1 with the keeper.
