Early days but it’s difficult to see a player that was worth using next seasons budget for.

Agreed. Works hard and can keep the ball well, but at times I find myself forgetting he is on the pitch. Was one of the brighter ones in attack today, though. Whatever that means considering the performance.

Just needs to start doing everything a bit quicker. This rolling his foot over the ball does nothingbut give the fullback time.

Or if he's going to cut inside go for it quickly.

You can see the few times he does he's difficult to handle.

Spot on. Get going fast and put the fb on his back foot

Thought he played very well and this place would probably look different if Fred headed that free header in the net.

Linked up very well and progressed the ball. Should have scored though. Very weak attempt.

Maybe it also gives his time and options? As his teammates make themselves available for passing options.

Not having Elanga as our main starter down the right is worth spending next season’s budget on. Not to mention that he’s scored three goals for us in three premier league games.

I get that but being better than Elanga shouldn’t cost that much and won’t be good enough for very long. Hopefully he gets better because he needs to.

Very easy to see the talent, work rate, pace he offers and mix of abilities as a future world class player. There aren't many left footed right wingers out there, and we were desperate for one. That's why we bought one

I thought he was our best attacker and second best player after Casemiro. Very involved in the first half, occupied defenders, linked up well, created a good chance.
He's not a winger to run down the line obviously, but today it seemed he executed the instructions. He actually had a good game without contributing with a goal/assist, which doesn't happen very often for our attackers.

I thought he was entirely meh. Struggled to beat league 1 level defenders on the outside on the rare occasions he tried and his passes infield often got cut out. His right foot also looked terrible

Hopefully there is more to come but his output has been better than his performances so far

Perhaps we might get more out of him if he was played as a left footed left winger, a la Ryan Giggs? He still scored goals by cutting in from the left, didn't he? And I thought we bought a right winger to get past defenders and get the ball into the middle.

I’m not sure it is that easy. Time will tell on this one.

yeah was expecting him and later Sancho to find the Cypriot back four much easier. He’s looked good before tonight though.

Created big chance that Fred headed over. Not precise enough with his finish from Ronaldo's pass; surprised he took a touch and then his shot was too central, making it relatively easy for the keeper to save. His right-foot has looked really poor so far.

His technique, control, passing is all pretty much impeccable. Able to get a shot off well out of nothing, has good pace, great work rate.... He honestly has all the talent you need to be a top player. He's press resistant and doesn't lose the ball pretty much ever, and he isn't selfish. Easier to teach him to be more selfish than to teach a player to lift their head up for a pass.

He's a right winger not a left winger. Ten hag likes inverted wingers for obvious reasons. People on here are getting all upset about Sancho, Antony, even Rashford not taking on their man too much.... Hint hint, it's instructions. I don't think ten Hag wants his wingers to be constantly trying to dribble past their fullbacks. Sometimes sure, but it's more pass and move and keep the ball, find good space, play the smart pass for an easier chance. City's wingers don't take on their men that often. It's more about overlaps and connecting with the players around them.

We bought a right winger because we were desperate for one. Antony has bags of talent, he's capable of being creative and he's capable of being a goalscorer. He's an elite talent and has a rare mix of attributes, but he's nowhere near the finish article yet which is fine. He's done great in his start here though. People complaining are weird as feck.

I know we are all desperate for a world class winger/wide player again but there is nothing he has shown (bar glimpses of his finishing) that he will be a definite top notch player for us.
As a wide player if you struggle to beat your man, then that is immediately a big issue. I don't think ETH has instructed his wide players to not try and beat their FBs regularly (which will be an insane instruction in the first place). It seems he is still finding his feet here and I hope he will come good in time but there is a long long way to go before we can say with certainty that he will be a star for us.

Harsh. The price tag shouldn't be used to judge him. Shouldn't even be in conversations. I thought we all knew the late window circumstance is what made it so, the fee was never meant to represent his pure value. Even Malacia could have gone for 50m if we approached them that late and desperate. The fee should only be brought up when talking about our genius hierarchy. We can't be asking Antony to be a 100m player when it's us who didn't do our homework on time.

He is doing really well so far. But i still don't get it why he is not trying to beat full backs. Wasn't he in Dutch league first in the league regarding dribble stats?

To be fair it is frustrating he does not go past defenders and has a tendency to pass back. However, to be fair, Salah hardly ever dribbles past opponents on the byline. Remember Beckham - one of the best players to play on the right for us and hardly ever took on his opponent. Hopefully, with experience, he'll learn how to best position himself and play as a couple with his full-back creating passing lines and running the byline.

There's a mantra here of Antony not taking his man. Just cause he's not constantly doing it or dribbling for the sake of it doesnt mean he wont come good and money was wasted on him. I for one like how disciplined he is but people want to see him doing dribbles all the time and whatnot.

I really enjoy watching him play and his first touch and technique is of a high level. I think there's much more to come and at 22 years of age his potential is very high.

Not all the time just once or twice to give the fullback something to think about. Funnily enough Ten Hag only the other day also said the same and that he needs to go on the outside and use his right foot too

Kill me if you have to but so far I see unwarranted praise. Last night he kept doing exactly what Sancho kept doing in the reverse fixture. Face fullback then pass back. Rashford who "can't dribble" was a looking more dangerous even if he wasted the chances.

Isn't this what people moaned about Scholes saying?

Well if eth really doesn't want our wingers to take on players then we can expect a lot more frustrating nights against low block teams. Our full backs offer very little going forward so inverted wingers just means we end up very narrow. However, rashford was clearly much more willing to run at players than Anthony so not sure I believe it was instruction.

The comparison with city doesn't pass judgement for me, the likes of Grealish, Forden, silva and maheez regularly go past players with the ball..

It does seem like there is an eagerness to overhype Anthony's performances to date on here. I feel like there is (hopefully) a lot more to come from him that we haven't seen yet

It's a pretty essential part of being a wide player. You put your opposite man on the back foot and give him something to worry about. In his highlights he was running up dudes for Ajax so dunno whats going on there

People on here trying to convince themselves that wide players not attempting to take on their man is somehow preferred and normal. Passing backwards and not attacking your fullback is somehow the staple. I genuinely feel these dudes are scared at the minute. In my playing days as a FB I would love for a wide player to pass back every time I closed him down. I would think he was terrified of me

I personally think Ten Hag purposely went for this type of RW.

He is more a creative Sancho type of winger than a take on, run and shoot type of winger.

Ten Hag done this on purpose because it potentially gives us Sancho and Anthony as creative wide players whilst also giving us other more direct goal scoring options in Rashford and the potential returning of a player that should not be named.

This allows ten Hag to have one direct goal scorer on one side and a more creative on the other - or some other various options which is important to a very tactical manager.
