The signing of Sanchez and moving Martial around the pitch and cutting down his game time was one of the biggest mistakes of Jose's reign so far.
Complete howler. Imagine sacrificing your brightest talent for an established player who himself fails miserably. You couldn't make up the missteps we've made post SAF even if you were a fantacising fanatical Liverpool fan. But we manage to make this sort of shit happen.

A lesser player in a similar situation (inconsistent opportunity) would have no confidence to pull out the performances he's had recently. Great talent who proving his mental toughness.
Hard for us to really guage the mental strength of our younger players, but I've never really considered Martial to be a bad apple. Contrary to popular belief he's actually quite intelligence defensively. And Ive always felt that he has performed pretty well and peristantly keeping in mind the fairly harsh/unfabourable treatment by the manager. As I've said before I'd love to see him treated them Lukaku and Matic (or initially Sanchez) are by Mourinho, or Martial was by LVG (as a special talent).

Mourinho and Martial just appear to be a poor fit.

Our best winger. Always has been these last few years. Would thrive in a functioning attacking team. Also our best finisher.

Sure he has lots to improve on but he should be a starter.

I understand you not believing him to be a CF but it's not as if there's no basis for that view. When be joined United, he looked to have everything to be a top class modern CF. His hold up play was particularly superb at the time. This aspect of his game has regrezzedr as he's been played more and more as a winger. Also, his finishing and general quality in the final is superb. He has the touch, awareness and composure to be extremely clinical with his end product /goal scoring, and hence you want him in those positions as often as can be. Hugging the touchline and passing the ball back/whipping in crosses for Lukaku just seems like a waste of his attacking brilliance.

Not many here would share this view but I believe Martial has more to his game and could be better fit as Mourinho forward than Lukaku as you mentioned his hold up play is quite good add to that he could actually play with his back to the goal.

Best finishing quality in our squad and it is not even close. Just needs the confidence and a few games. Same like Shaw - give them a run of games and they are great.

Im so unsure of Martial, one game he's fantastic, the next he is switched off. Does he even fit in? Or can Lukaku play with him?

Lukaku seems to be the first one on the teamsheet, no matter what, and for me they dont seem a good fit together.

His amount and the quality of is crossing is not very good. I personally thinks he needs to work in his crossing and do it more often. I know lukaku has been quite bad, but he aint getting the help he needs from the Wingers.

They had great chemistry last year though. I believe Martial assisted Rom more than anyone in the squad last year or just behind Pogba

They showed a solid understanding, and Martial set him up with several through balls or crosses. He set him up many more times where Lukaku's first touch or finishing let him down. If Martial is playing, it can only benefit Lukaku but he is in such poor form right now that it's difficult to see him come out of it. Maybe today?

He ha 5 assists last season. So far this season he has 0. He's well behind the other top players in his position on that regard. I strongly belive he has to work on it. He often goes for the dribble instead of cross/pass.

But, against Chelsea he was terrific in front of goal. Let's hope he does it again tonight. Should of course start.

He could work on it. But I'm more concerned about our entire attack being set-up to serve Lukaku in the box. For me Martial (or any other wide forward we play) is actually stuck out wide hugging the touchline with an intent to put in delivery for Lukaku far too much. I'd much rather the management and the system encourage them to express themselves and play in a cohesive manner that brings the best out of the unit and the individual. If anything, were limiting the dribbling/skill of our skillful players.

Players that assisted Lukaku last season:

Martial - 6
Mata - 4
Rashford - 3
Mkhitaryan, Pogba, Sanchez - 2
Blind, Lingard, Matic, Rojo - 1

I thought they were a good fit together last season at least and combined well against CSKA Moscow in particular.

The assists:
CSKA Moscow 0:1 Manchester United (a cross - Lukaku with initial ball to Martial)
CSKA Moscow 0:3 Manchester United (another cross)
Manchester United 4:0 Crystal Palace (ground cross - Martial was subbed on after it was 3:0)
Manchester United 2:0 Derby County (1-2 between Lukaku and Martial - Martial was subbed on with 20 mins left)
Manchester United 3:0 Stoke City (through ball/cross kinda thing)
Manchester United 1:1 Chelsea

Read on reddit that Martial contributed to more goals than anyone since Jose took over. That's a superb stat considering he was never regular player, without checking in guessing Lukaku played more mins than Martial.
Bit sceptical about that stat. Here are the numbers from transfermarkt:

If all competitions then he has same numbers as Lukaku and Pogba and one less than Rashford. In the league only he's equal with Lukaku and just behind Pogba. Either way his minutes per contribution compared to the rest is impressive with him not being a regular.

More assists than other player. He is playing himself back in Mourinho's favor with a string of great performances. I hope he keeps it up.

Edit: second most assists

Pogba's numbers are very good too considering he is a midfielder.

This is not true. Martial likes to make cutback passes into the box. It’s like a low cross to be exact. We don’t have any wingers in our squad so handicapping our wide forwards by forcing them to play like wingers just to benefit lukaku has seen us drop valuable points so far.

I think it’s time for lukaku to readjust his game and look for the low crosses from martial when he gets to the byline. I’ve seen mata, pogba and Sanchez get on the end of these low crosses because they know it’s coming. Lukaku needs to do the same more often.

Man Utd 0:1 Juventus
Awful today. Nothing came off and looked knackered from the first minute

Whatever he was tonight, he was a step above Lukaku and Rashford.

Feels weird to drop such a stinker after all the positive vibe around him and his top performance recently.

Hard to blame him, at least he could control the ball. Plays as a wing back in the first half, then needs to run 60 yards with the ball and is constantly up against their entire defence with no support (no, lukaku doesnt count).

Better tactics will get more consistency out of everyone.

How is he the first player who's thread was bumped? Yes, he was bad tonight, so was the rest of the team but he was at least trying to get something going. The problem with Martial is that he's not a leader and seems to only play well when the rest of the team is playing at least decent, outside of Pogba I don't think there's any player that really plays well even if the rest of the team is not and even Pogba does it very rarely.

Lukaku, Matic, and Rashford were the worst players tonight.

Pretty sure all he did was run into players, then that feeble shot

He was poor but there’s feck all around him, especially with Lukaku incapable of making a run.

Was very bad today and I'm one of his biggest fans. Lazy and ineffective.

Love him but he messed up some attacks and he lost cancelo way too many times for my liking

Though he did alright, things weren't coming off, but nor were most players attempts at creativity. Poor because Juve were generally incredible in defence. I liked seeing him work hard and go looking for the ball, just a pity nothing came of it.

He was terrible tonight, but he was exactly the same against Chelsea. Tonight he didn't get the goals to mask it.

His decision making is actually quite bad for such a huge talent.

He was the best of the front 3 in as much as he actually controlled the ball a few times, but overall a poor performance.
