Likely because we seem to have a real problem there currently with Lukakus form, and Martial scores goals
Most of the goals were from LF. Starting at CF in this team goes beyond goals. Mourinho will also get that chance to give Sanchez that LF place back. In this team, Martial is almost guaranteed to have a bad all round game through the middle and if he doesn't score - with Sanchez back at LF, Martial will likely end up back at the bench for Lukaku.

Opponents would never push as high against us with Martial as number 9. Blistering pace and control

A lesser player in a similar situation (inconsistent opportunity) would have no confidence to pull out the performances he's had recently. Great talent who proving his mental toughness.

He looked such a composed finisher under LVG and yesterday we saw a glimpse of that again. Really hope he can have a great season.

I get what you’re saying but the issue is should that be the reason not to do it? People are calling for him to have a run of games there not just one

That is one reason fans shouldn't want it. Martial has got the chance to make the LF position his own and he has been doing really well there lately, better than Sanchez and Rashford had done there this season. If he's moved to CF, we would be significantly weakened on that left - going by his current form - and there's no guarantee he'd be a success through the middle, even with a run of games there. It would be like someone robbing his boss and his potential salary to pay his creditor whilst running the risk of losing the money before it reaches the creditor. It would be better imo, to stick Sanchez or Rashford through the middle - rather than leave either on the bench - if we want to drop Lukaku and let our best and most inform LF play LF.

Agree with you mate! With a proper LB, fecking finally, making runs and providing width and an additional threat on the outside we get to see Martial do what he does best. Isolated vs one defender they shit themselves! Rashford or Sanchez as CF is a much better idea. That pass from Rashford to Sterling last week (which came as a surprise for me), Martial is capable of playing those consistently. He has a pass on him as well.

People are going to ridicule me for saying this but I have watched enough of this guy to say that he's a much better CF than Lukaku ever will be. People underrate how good Martial is with his back to goal. He can hold the ball very well, has great upper body strength and can bring others into play. He has all the attributes to be a top top CF with or without a partner. The problem always has been when he's been played as CF with average players on the wings in Rashford and Lingard. Play him with Mata and Sanchez with Pogba at 10 and they will produce top quality football.

People seem to forget he played as a CF last season away to Everton and he was very good! Scored a beautiful goal from outside of box ❤️

Wasn't he trusted up top when Lukaku was injured towards the end of last season and ended up being piss poor?

Would like to see us persist with Martial and Rashford as wide forwards with some defensive responsibility.

The striker/false 9 as it stands is an issue. Would like to see us give Sanchez a go through the middle, although in fairness it's hardly deserved.

Martial on the left has generally been his best position for us. The guy is more than goals, and when he cuts inside with his right foot, he can be special. Seems to play very well with Luke Shaw too.

He's like a fast Berbatov. I thought this yesterday after watching his first goal, the more I think of it now, the similarities keep arising.

I also think that Martial is the best striker on this team, I've always felt that but when Lukaku was banging the goals in then it was fine because I like Martial to have the ball more than he would up front. However, let's not pretend that having Sanchez back on that left wing is going to produce top quality football as there's been no indication of that. The problem with Mourinho is that he has no balls when it comes to sticking with a formation if it doesn't show results right away. As others have mentioned, I'm concerned that if we try Martial up front and it doesn't bring immediate results (which would be unlikely when you're making such a radical change), then we will not see it again for a long time.

But yes, to me Martial is absolutely the best striker on this team by a long shot, he's just not Mourinho's type of striker for his team.

No, we were very good. If we weren't good, he'd have been anonymous. He was rarely in the box too.

And it's not for the first time either. First was when he joined as a teenager with a huge price tag and performed brilliantly despite the noise, second was last season when he fought himself back into the first team after being frozen out. He's a tough cookie our Martial.

No he wasn't. In fact toward the end of last season he hardly got a look in(after Sanchez arrival).

There are similarities between the two. The close control and finesse definitely reminds of Berbatov. They played together for a while actually at Monaco. Maybe Martial learned a few things?

Two very well taken goals against. I think for the first one he showed very good reaction for first goal. Good precise for second goal. Glad we didn't sell him as I've always been a fan. Hoping Jose gives him a lengthy run in the team and he keeps on scoring. Hope he stays here for many hears and develops into the player I thought he would become.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking. If I'm not mistaken, didn't Berbatov recently come out in his support as well?

Rashford was the one who was upfront while Lukaku was out. I don't remember Martial getting a chance there. Off the top of my head maybe there was one match where we played both up top and they were both poor, but I'm pretty sure that was about it.

I want him to stay on the left though. Sanchez is the one who should get a chance through the middle.

Great potential and good to see a bit of fire in his belly. I would start Martial every game on that left side. Let's hope he signs that new contract soon

Let him start on that left side but if shit doesn't work out then let him play as a striker for the rest of the game. He has the ability to hit really good figures and its something we can't disregard, we desperately need him to transcend previous form and save our season. Give him the minutes and faith from this point on and stop fecking about.

Oh no Berbatov never failed his first touches, Martial somwtimes does and his through balls aren't as good as Berba's.

Martial is a discount version of Henry.

How about the deftness of his touch? His perceived laziness? Also, you're comparing 22 year old Martial to prime Berbatov, his passing and consistency will improve.

Edit: A quick Google search tells me that at the same age, Berbatov had just been promoted from the Leverkusen second team at that stage of his career.

Yeah. He's much more a winger taking players on at the moment. I think he may be too laborious with his back to goal.

Berba wasn't lazy, he was smart. Berba's touch is more like a silk than Martial's already good first touch.

If anything, Martial shouldn't be compared to Berba just yet. Berba is considered as one of the most successful premier League striker, Martial is still a high potential inside forward. If he could reach that potential, of course he should be better than Berba.

Here's a thought, one of the main reasons we were very good is because we had a dynamic skillful striker upfront rather than a lump who can barely hold on to the ball.

Beyond the goals, it was the effort that shone through yesterday. Man was working hard.

Positives: obviously the goals and his effort. He is more natural up wide than as a CF in my opinion.
Negativnes: His decision making from time to time

The signing of Sanchez and moving Martial around the pitch and cutting down his game time was one of the biggest mistakes of Jose's reign so far.

What is this obsession with Martial playing at CF? He just played two very good games at LF and everybody is suddenly clamouring for him to start from the middle. What if he starts there and have a bad game? He'd be back on the bench.
I understand you not believing him to be a CF but it's not as if there's no basis for that view. When be joined United, he looked to have everything to be a top class modern CF. His hold up play was particularly superb at the time. This aspect of his game has regrezzedr as he's been played more and more as a winger. Also, his finishing and general quality in the final is superb. He has the touch, awareness and composure to be extremely clinical with his end product /goal scoring, and hence you want him in those positions as often as can be. Hugging the touchline and passing the ball back/whipping in crosses for Lukaku just seems like a waste of his attacking brilliance.

Essentially we need to figure out how to get him taking more touches in and around the box, whether to use his dribbling/technical ability to create for others or to score himself. Whether that means him playing narrower as a LW, or as a SS/CF.
