He seems to find it extremely difficult to pass to moving targets. He always passes it as if they're stationary, never seems to play it properly infront in the direction they're running

Basically passes the ball as though he’s the player receiving it. His insistence on standing still while waiting for a pass being another big flaw in his game.

He’s being coached poorly then. Could you imagine how good he would be under Pep?

No I can’t.

With quick, accurate short passing being such a big part of Pep’s approach, I doubt he’d even pick him.

The only reason it is slow is because he gets the ball and has no options. Everytime he gets the ball you can see he is actually looking to quicken the movement and play it quickly he is pretty much always looking for a quick one two but there is nothing to hit.

He can only do so much when those around him are so poor.

I feel Matic and Lukaku are two huge problems in our team and really limit those around him.

People forget it's a team game. When two major parts of a machine absolutely do not work, it's impossible for other parts to compensate.

The key word in my post wasn’t “quick” it was “accurate”.

This is a factor that runs throughout our team, so I can only assume we don't really work on it in training. We're really good at building play and passing around the back line but as soon as we need some guile or creativity to get into dangerous areas our players go missing. It's all to feet or over the top.

Juve gave us a bit of a lesson first half in a very basic tactic of moving the ball quickly to shift our defensive unit. The end goal was pretty much always to try and isolate Shaw with a long cross field ball but they didn't rush and waited until the pass was on and our back four had become narrower and narrower. Their goal came from this and they had a few other half chances down that flank with Ronaldo making the run or the RB.

I can't remember a player being as bad as Anthony at passing. He literally stares at his target for a few seconds before his soft short pass. I can't see how he ever completes a pass. Has Jose not recognized this and had a discussion OR better yet, a drill?

Not sure why people are going on about his passing, always been decent to me. Admittedly it can be better and last night wasn’t great but he is the one trying to make things happen and the knife edge passes at the top end are the hardest ones to make happen. Needs to improve accuracy but it’s hardly horrendous.

Because he makes a great run, beats his man and then makes absolute dumb passes directly to opposition players or in areas where only opposition defenders could reach or wild pass which is of not much use. If someone would have made a video of Martial (even in better matches like the Chelsea one), you would see it is a common thing he does.

The problem for him is that we are not a team that create loads of chances and so everything counts

Martial's struggle passing is due to his inability to move in to the right places to isolate defenders.

He used to do this a lot - finding himself normally targeting a CB out of position with the ability to take him on or make a short pass; finding either himself or a team mate on goal.

However - under Jose he finds himself as a supplier made to play on the wing as wide as possible directly in front of a fullback who tends to be covered by the CB behind him. Martial struggles to get past both by pure dribbling aswell as his passing is intercepted by the fullback, the CB behind the fullback or the CDM that adds extra support on his side. He doesn't have the ability to find the best space for him to attack because his role is one of a winger who keeps wide & attempts to cross to Lukaku.

Last few games he has been a little better purely because he has - I think - by himself tried to find more central areas occasionally; even when he does that he still goes back to wide area to spread out the attack.

I don’t really see it the same, I do see him misplace or not execute passes as consistently as he should but I see it as he is trying to thread a difficult pass through and either misses by a tiny fraction or mistimes it. Just in that Chelsea game off the top of my head I can think of two incidents where the pass was just fractionally off but they were passes that would have opened Chelsea up.

Other than that his passing over the season and other seasons have been pretty good and he is one of the better and more dangerous passers.

This is 100% true. People see patterns where there are none. His passing has been off lately, that's a fact, but generally his passing is quite dangerous, that's also a fact.

Fecking hell didn't take this thread long to return to the usual...

He's a talented plater, who's nit good enough to be first choice yet. Same with Rashford.. But, we dont have any other players that are better, so he starts. Wouldnt be starting for any top clubs in Europe and not for City, Pool, Spurs or Chelsea.

We need a upgrade on certain players or accept a few bad seasons

Not yet good enough? Of course he has proven to be good enough. Who then is good enough if he's not?

Juve's first goal summed Martial up really. Reactive instead of proactive. Minimum effort. Honestly, it happened right in front of me, I see it developing and I couldn't believe the effort he put in to track his man. He's either stupid or lazy.

And just another point, against Chelsea was playing no different. Luckily he got a goal and then suddenly looked interested. I remember actually saying to my mates "he's got a goal and suddenly he looks interested in playing". It's as though he's not fully focused or fired up at times and suddenly he remembers he's on a football pitch in front of thousands playing for Manchester United.

Welcome to the realisation that we're actually just not that good. If we had a team that was capable of going toe to toe with Europe's elite, very few of these players would feature. I've been saying this for a long time now.

I made a thread which about this about a year ago asking who was good enough and giving my opinion that not many of these players will be considered starters next time we win the league. Not many agreed, but I bet it would get a different response today.

The players are not the reason the team is not good enough rather, the team is the reason the players doesn't look good enough. Stick those so good players in this team and they would look half the players they are. Everyone is struggling, we don't look like a team.
You can make a comparison between our players and the top teams players, before we got ours and before they got theirs. Theirs were no better than ours. Our players only suddenly became bad once they joined us.

He is inconsistent defensively and movement wise, the X amount of times we loose the ball and opponents attack doesn't help either as mist of the time they have to play as wingbacks or full backs, then he lacks the vision for movement on quick effective counter, while our mid take too long to pass forward as well.

I can say that about any wide player here, not just martial, which suggests there also seems to be a coaching and problem linked to it. Jose demands Ji sung park, prime Valencia , Willian type work rate in that area.

As a matter of interest, in Fergie's last couple season, which players would have got into "Europe's elite" sides in your opinion?

Let's look at which of our players have ever proven themselves as being good enough to win a league title.

Mata
Sanchez
Pogba
Matic
Valencia
Young
De Gea

4 have won titles or the CL, but are past their best. 2 are now converted fullbacks. De Gea is obviously proven to be good enough, as is Pogba. Sanchez never won anything of note with Arsenal, did win things in Spain but was ultimately shipped out from Barcelona. He's past his best also.

Smalling and Jones have won things in the past but not so much as starters, more as back up to much better players.

Basically very few have ever proven themselves s being good enough, and to most of those that have, there are very legitimate reasons why they are probably not at the level they once were. The jury is rightfully out on the rest, but I don't think many, if any, will ever win a league title here. We'll replace most and eventually we will win something of note again.

Had a great game against Chelsea but was sloppy and didn't use the ball well enough against Juve, he did try though to his credit but both him n Rashford couldn't get into the game.

The RMC article made it seem we are haggling about his wages.
Think this will be done soon.

Andy Mitten said the club have done well to hold on to Shaw and Martial. Think he's more believable then Jim White.
