Thierry Henry just nailed it on Mourinho "keeping Martial happy".
Exactly what I've been saying in a different way. All Martial can do is take his chance when he gets it. In the meantime, keep working and keep a good attitude and be patient. He has mega talent. If he keeps calm, and just let his football do the work, then he'll get rewarded eventually.

Both him and Rash need to be cool. It will happen for them.

Agreed, what we are seeing in these last two games is all about the way Mourinho has treated Martial since he's turned up at the club.

Mourinho knows the best way to deal with players and he knows that Martial needs more stick than carrot.

Sorry can you expand on that? Can't quite understand what he's saying.

Paraphrasing: "I'm old school, I think that it is down to the player to keep himself happy. If he trains well and plays well he gives the manager no choice but to play him and he will be happy then"

His "goals per minutes played" would be insane right now.
Brilliant player. I think he should start ahead of Rashford.

He came on in the 80th minute against West Ham and in the 75th minute today. Including the added time that's around 1 goal every 15min, or 6 goals/game. :D

The good news is that Martial is slowly working his way up to the starting line up. He practically started this season as third of fourth choice behind even Lingard but it seems that lately he's at least above Lingard who isn't being picked ahead of him since pre season finished. He just needs another push to regain his starting spot and keep it by working harder.

The fact that there is a discussion comparing and likening Martial and Rashford talent shows how bizarre people can get.

Look Rashford is a good talent, has abundance of pace and shown quite the steady improvement which is a great positive to take but Martial is just clearly a different level talent wise to Rashford. I mean how has this even turned into a back and forth debate when the obvious superior talent shouldn't even be put into question.

You mean to tell me it's not THAT obvious Martial is clearly the far more talented player of the 2 to some?

The recent benching by Mou has clearly misguided some it seems. Reminder even Lingard had/has been preferred over Martial by Mourinho, let's also argue about his comparable talent to Martial.

This 100x

His pace, composure in the penalty area and dribbling ability give him such a chance of being a top player. He does need to add more variety to his attacking game and more work rate to get starts ahead of Rashford on the left under Mourinho in a 4-2-3-1 though.

And another good news about Martial is that he started this form since the first game in pre season and has carried it int the league. he's been just as productive as he was in pre season(probably our most productive attacker in pre season as well) despite lack of minutes. He's managed to find that consistency so far be able to be constantly productive no matter he circumstances.

He had a poor pre season last year(coming from a confidence shattering Euro) with that bad form carrying at the beginning of the season and unfortunately that period cost him his place and trust in the manager. After that Mou never really trusted him nor gave him enough chances even after he started coming into form toward end December/January period. It was hard for him to get back into the starting line up by then and as that lack of faith from Mou continued, his season was one.

At least he has a whole season to start from scratch and given his talent, he'll probably regain his place in the starting line up as long as Mou regains faith and reward him this time.

It's also important to note that Martial finished last season strong. All he really need now is faith from his manager. Ball on your court Mou.

Think the solution might be Mata and Miki to share their roles and start both Rash and Martial. Very uncomfortable with us playing one off the other...

Shock horror Martial plays well, is praised by Mourinho, scores again and all is happy.

That's football ladies and gents. You play well you get your chances. Mourinho has been pretty fair with everyone just like last season when he came under criticism about how he handled Shaw and Mkhitaryan..

You can't just expect to play. It's all about creating the type of atmosphere we have at the club right now. Not what we endured under Moyes and LvG.

Sky just showed their aftermatch montage before the program finished. Was it him finishing his celebration by pointing at the badge on his shirt? Class if so.

I can see the logic behind continuing to bench Martial. He's the better finisher so having him coming on against tired legs probably helps increase the chances of us scoring. Though Rashford moves more, his finishing isn't the same so have Rashford tire the opposition defences and Martial come on to finish them off.
Though this this were lie the problem. People tend to associate Martial strongly to something he just showed and tend to ignore the rest. Your post would make much more sense if finishing was the only thing Martial was good at and keeping him as a trump card in dying minutes is an option. But that's not Martial. He is a proper footballer with much more to his game than just finishing.

Today I saw instances where our wide players found themselves on the counter with 2 defenders to take on and they wasted those chances. Martial would have dribbled and try to lay an assist. His assists stats compared to everyone else of our attacking players being higher despite not being favored last season shows this. He's just that productive, not because of sub appearances but in general.

He has a game that makes him an all-round dangerous attacker that can score, assists and create dangerous situations with his running with the ball(our second goal springs to mind).

True but a Player of his Age and Quality Needs to Play more than 15 minutes average per game that`s for sure.

However, I am glad he seems to find his Mojo again.

I love Rashford but Martial should start.

Another great cameo, and even though Mkhi laid off the final pass for Pogba's goal, Martial was instrumental in the build up. Just transformed our attacking play when he came on, although it coincided with Swansea pushing forward more, so it's difficult to know how much of it was his impact alone. I thought his movement and energy was very good too. If he can produce that over 90 minutes he will start. In the meantime this tag-team of Rashford and Martial is breathing new life into our left wing.

Very smart man management from Mourinho yet again, just like he did with Mhkitariyan, Shaw and others last season.

Loved the way he has responded to Mourinho's challenge.

It's a very long season and he'll soon enough get his chance to start. He just has to make himself undroppable and is making a very good case for that already.

Good post.

Are people really suggesting that Martial be some sort of super impact subs? The kid is way too good and has too much abilities to waste them for only sub appearances. His recent good cameos shouldn't curse him to be seen as this super sub to run a tired defenders.

Its like people have forgotten all the bag of abilities Martial has which are essential to be in the team from minute 1. Martial doesn't need tired or disorganized teams and defenders to play well. he is our most dangerous attacking player, why on earth should we keep him as some sort of impact sub? Today alone there were instances where I saw us waste on the counter which would have resulted in much more dangerous situation had martial been involved.

Martial isn't a sub player, he is a starting player material. We need his abilities from minute 1.

Whats cooler than cool? Ice cold?
Whats cooler than Ice cold? Tony Martial in front of goal.

Dude has to start ahead of Rashford next game. His link up with Mkhi is fantastic too. And with Pogba :)

"Anthony Martial is working hard. He is confident. The French language connection is there to help him a lot and get to the level we know he can be because the potential is huge."

Mourinho post game

It's easier to score against a team that's stretched out and tired.

Not sure about the starter claims.

Crackin' little player. As long as he's working hard and doing everything Jose asks of him, he'll be a starter soon enough.
