If the manager isn't gonna put him on the left then he may as well go back to being an impact sub. He offers nothing out there.

I thought he played quite well. One of his better overall performances this year. Really should have scored at least one goal though.
This.

A fair bit of overreaction in this thread. He was one of our better and more threatening players even if he should have scored.

Lad was fine against the toon. Just needed a bit of extra calmness and he'd have won the game for us. I'm not adverse to swapping him back onto the left as Sanchez was on the right for Barca. But Martial looked fine on the right, worked hard, did actually float around a fair bit, just a shame his usual finishing went astray.

Guy needs to quit football for a little while and seek a psychologist. He has the body language of a Sunday league footballer who is definitely talented but is having a bad day. There was one occasion in the match, where he looked exasperated and was gesticulating his arm because a ball went slightly askew. Had he been focused, he'd have picked it up.

That describes Lukaku perfectly

Should have scored , being played on the right wasn't excuse for him bottling that

I think his biggest problem is blowing hot and cold. Sometimes he is cool as cucumber with his finishes and other times predictable and lack of composure. Sometimes appear to play with intensity especially when he comes on as a sub, other times he’s just real laid back and goes missing and have an anonymous game.

I was told on this forum that that is to be expected with young and developing players. I’m not sure I 100% believe that.

Tony Marital, he came from France,
He'll shit bricks whenever he get a scoring chance.
50 million down the drain,
as Tony Martial fluffs a shot again...

He should have scored the first one yes, but it was a great save from the keeper to be fair, stood his ground until the shot. The scramble in front of goal was just bad luck, you don't really have time to aim there. Sanchez fecked up a bigger chance, but i don't see anyone calling for his head on that account.

He had a good game, was threatrning all night, incisive and proggressive with his passing as usual. Unlucky not to score the one on one but he kept making good runs the whole game and never let the miss afftect his play, a sign of a strong character. There were so many positives from his game on the right but some on here are acting as if he was crawling on the pitch all night and also managed to miss three open goal chances, it's like they watched the alternate universe version of the game. If you are looking for someone to blame for not getting us ahead, look no further than alexis who actually missed a gaping goal

Looked unsettled and nervous. Wan't all that bad, but it wasn't his usual calm performance, because of which he missed that sitter (absolutely no excuses for that).

Obviously needs to be benched, regain his confidence and come back again.

What. He did well enough to get himself into goal scoring positions, he didn't go into his shell and hide after that one on one miss. He made great runs after that miss. Logic is if he keeps getting into goal scoring positions he will start scoring again no? Benching him would make him even more nervous, thinking is I miss this I am going to the bench

It's like he did a Sterling type miss if you read this thread. He should have done better than what he did but I have been impressed that his much better that I had expected from the right.

I think that the result is clouding judgement a bit. After that initial period from kick off where Newcastle dominated, we were better for the rest of the half and Martial was playing really well. I said watching the game that suddenly he became the conductor in our attack.

He was taking a man on and slipping disguised passes, spraying it to the left wing, playing through balls. It was the best period of play from Martial this whole season imo. If he'd have scored that chance it would have capped off an impressive period of play.

For whatever reason we just didn't get Martial as involved in the second half and ended up moving him back to the left.

His best spell of the game was on the right flank, agreed. Looked more dangerous than he did on the left, later on in the game. Which goes against the whole “OMG, we’ve ruined our best player” hysteria in this thread.

Yeah, I hope he is played too and not benched. Just that , he was in his best form just before the Sanchez signing, scoring 'goal of the season' contender like goals. Something seems a bit off with him lately and these shaky performances (even though it was quite good as you pointed out), could affect his confidence. A few more training session where they work on their chemistry could help matters.

I think Martial gets singled out far too many times when the team as a whole has been bad. I think that for some people it's because they know he is very talented and could or should do more, and for others because they hear others speak of his talent but somehow do not see it or think it's overrated. Either way, he's a fairly polarizing figure. When I read comments about selling him after any bad performances, I can only roll my eyes at how ridiculous that is. Martial has improved, whether you want to speak about his movement, his passing, or shooting longer shots than the ones he's used to in the box, he's improved all those aspects to varying levels. If in a couple of years, he's still relatively similar when he's getting the playing time, then I won't roll my eyes at the idea of selling him.

You can always have a player or two under-perform in a good environment, but when the whole team fails to perform consistently, then you have to look at the coach and the environment the team is in. I think Mourinho's style was never impressive to look at, but it got results. However, once the results start to go south, then it's very hard to overlook the fact that he's got a team with talents capable of doing so much better and almost every one on the team is under-performing.

Agreed. Can't believe any of these guys watched the same game.

He was playing well apart from the missed chances which to be fair - one was a good save and two decent blocks. Not like he skied them over the bar.

He's usually renowned as one of our best finishers. You can forgive one or two missed chances in a game from him of all people as he's usually deadly.

He linked up relatively well with Sanchez and I don't think they're incompatible - just need a run of games together.

Too much emphasis is on results versus developing a cohesive style of play.

It would be wrong to villify him for his misses. He experienced a dip in form after Zlatan's arrival last season. Jose should be very careful to avoid it this time around.

I never realized how limited his finishing is from close range. The finish to the far corner is fine when he plays on the left wing and cuts in but otherwise he doesn't have a different way to beat the keeper.

He's shown in Monaco other ways to score, but less so at United from that position. It's definitely one of the most effective shot you can have coming from the left wing, and he's quite good at it.

He's a strange one. When he played on the right side he looked heavy and downright slow. Most of the time he just looked unwilling to run. Then, when Lingard was subbed off and Mata came in on the right and Martial was switched to the left, he made a run through where he at the very least matched Yedlin for speed and created a great scoring chance. He does seem to let his head drop a little, and when things are not working for him, he stops running as much. He is rubbish on the right. Put him in the middle or to the left.

The guy is a limted player. After nearly thirty Premier league games, and cup games this season, we can see where Martial is.

Would Anthony Martial get into Chelsea? Tottenham? Liverpool? Man City? Course not.

A good player who we hope can become something more than that. He is inconsistent. United are now a team that considers the likes of Martial, Mata and Lindgard as world-beaters. We better take a look at things. They are good, but not at the level a club like United need.

Think he’d get in to most of those teams. He might not be a “consistent starter” however he’d improve nearly all those teams. He’d probably be starting for City and Chelsea at the moment. Liverpool would probably be the 1 team he wouldn’t get in due to how they play.

He however certainly needs to apply more penetration in his runs off the ball like he did yesterday and do it more often. Our team is somewhat to blame for all this including him as in general we just aren’t a good “team” we make very basic or lazy errors in defence and in build up play. The Midfield needs sorting for a start and in general I just feel as a unit we are very poorly coached.

Name one of those team's that he would start for? And also name the player who he would replace. The guy is decent, had a great first season, but has NOT developed his game. He is inconsistent, doesn't seem to have a great footbal brain, his decision making isn't that great... I have no idea what Martial or Mourinho feels he is best at. Running at players? Scoring goals? Creating chances? All this talk about his clinical finishing? Where? Hazard is clinical. Salah this season is clinical. You realise that Martial has not scored 25 goals in the Premiership yet?

This isn't seven-a-side league.. it's tough, week-in, week-out, games for one of the biggest sporting institutions on the planet. No, Anthony Martial is not, in my opinion, the level that United are looking for. A decent squad player, who flatters to deceive. He DOES have all the physical attributes that could make him an awesome player, but his application and awareness of the game.. in my opinion.... limited. Lukaku, Lindgard read the same.

He was better on the right than he was on the left. More involved, more creative, better.

That was the biggest knock on him at Monaco and I was pleasantly surprised to see his hunger in the first season here with LvG where he was legitimately a match winner. Unfortunately he seems to have gone back to that mode since then.

I believe I already did. Also Hazard is not clinical. Currently right now he and Martial have 9 goals each but Martial has more assists. Also notice I said “he might not be a consistent starter” and that right now he’d probably be a starter at Chelsea and City.
Effectivly you’re debating over a hypothetical as you have no idea if he would or wouldn’t start and it’s just your belief. Right now with Chelsea’s woes he’d in my opinion get picked as the 9. With Sane Just returning I think in Peps system and how he plays he’d easily fit in there. Spurs he’d be an option along with Son and he can replace Kane when needed.

A lot of it for me comes to how we play and it’s why we don’t see the best out of Lukaku, Shaw,Martial and Pogba. Tactics are an issue and I do beleieve if you put those guys in other teams they would perform better than they currently are. Anyway I don’t want to blow smoke up Martials Butt, and I agree he certainly has to improve aspects of his game. More intensity or desire for a start but that could be said for the whole team.

I only watched the last 35 or so, and he looked disinterested on the right. On the left, he at least made a run in behind and ran at their defenders. He's certainly not one to chase the loose ball.

I think it's the opposite. From right side he made the run that got him one on one chance, from left side he just stood there hugging the touch line even when the game was played on the right side.

Could well be, as I said, I only watched the last part of the match. Do you think he can work well from the right?

His game didn't look natural, anyways he drifted centrally many times. His playing style is more suited to left wing, at least until he adds more to his game like making some runs.
