IMO, Martial is better defensively than Rashford and he looks more comfortable in that wide role as well. Thankfully, Mane is still on international duty, so we won't have to deal with him either
I'm sure you must have noticed today that Martial was tracking back in 90th minute even when we were 4-0 up, his work rate has improved a lot and he did track back a lot to help Blind out.
Not disagreeing with either of you. Hope I'm wrong (been awful with lineups game anyway).

Good point about Mané being out.

Martial seems to be getting his cutting edge back, which is a big boost to the team. He's been much more direct and aggressive in his recent performances. We rely on him to run at defenders from the left side, and to utilize his pace and creativity to generate chances. He's a tremendous talent. Over time, I believe that Jose will get the best out of him. In the short term, he's earned a starting spot against Liverpool, in my opinion.

When he's good, he's unstoppable. Just needs to keep this form going, he takes the team up a level. What a player, joy to watch

With Liverpools defence, him and Mkhi need to start together. Their movement will be key in that game.

His passing often seems to go from good to shit then back again. Playing him wide puts too much onus on the creative part of his game. I'm not convinced that's something he has in his locker. Plenty of time to develop it, though.

I don't know why many people insisting on him leading the line, he's definitely cut for that winger forward role. His final output may be dodgy at times but it is always a joy to watch him attack a full back. 9 times out of 10 Martial will always skin his opponent.

When he's in this form, hes very creative. Created a fair few today despite his final ball being hit and miss.

Well it depends who his upfront. When he plays with Ibrahimovic this makes him more of a traditional winger who has to focus on creating things for Ibrahimovic either through crosses or passes. If he plays with Rashford then the onus is to out pressure on the back line by dribbling & fast pace interplay.

He is stronger at one than the other IMHO.

I would agree that in general.

Rashford leaves lots of space behind himself for martial to run in. Which seems to suit him a bit more generally.

All of our wingers are better suited to playing alongside a pacey front man who drifts about. None are particularly good crossers or excel at making late runs across defenders into the 6-yard box.

But Zlatan is undroppable in his current form, so it's not going to happen. Having said that, I'd love to se Ibrahimovic play more as a false 9 like he did against Sunderland. I think Martial and Mkhitaryan would benefit from the same things you've described above. So would Rashford and Mata if they were played on the wings.

He was quality in the first half but went a bit quiet after that.

Everyone did in fairness. I hate it when we relax when winning but I'd much prefer that to chasing a win.

Not so sure about his form. This was against a crappy defence, and he wasn't able to shine throughout the whole match. Not so sure if he can do the same against PL teams

... And he sort of did it all of last season.

Januzaj did it under Moyes. It's not the same when the team is struggling, so the manager decides to build it around a single in-form individual.

I'm certain Martial will make it further than Januzaj, but I wouldn't put too much stock into LvG's last season. I'm just satisfied to see him take baby steps under Mourinho. I'm of the belief, however, that he'd take strides in a more central role.

Junazaj's performances were no where near what Martial did last season. The club saw enough of him to spend up to £36m. The situation isn't comparable.

Really isnt comparable at all. Martial scored 17 goals and got 11 assists playing as a winger in his first season in the prem at 19/20 years old. Thats amazing no matter what way you look at it. This season he had a few tough months, but he still showed glimpses of his quality and the past month or so he's been class basically every time he played. He's the most promising u21 player in the world for me. At the very least, in the top elite tier in terms of potential alongside Dembele and a couple of others maybe.

Martial has all the tools. Great close control, pace, beats players with ease, and is a natural finisher. You can see where the Henry comparisons come from. Coming in from the left, so many similarities. He just needs to keep working on his movement, and consistency. Has a habit of drifting out of games still.

He's just turned 21 a month ago. The boy's got a ton of developing to do still. Potentially world class. And Mourinho is the perfect coach for him.

That's what I said.
You also said you wouldnt put much stock into his season under LvG, which is a bit ridiculous to say considering how good of a season it was and how productive it was for him being a 19/20 year old and playing on the wing for most of it.

Players often do well when an ordinary team is built around them. It happens all the time before they fail to recreate that form in a better side. He's a very good player in the making, but his very good numbers last season offer limited insight, imo.

And he wasn't playing on the wing in the same way as he is now. Zlatan doesn't drop as deep as Rooney used to. Martial will get there, but the LvG year was about as indicative as one of Young's seasons at Aston Villa.

That game won't do his confidence any harm. Looked like he was playing with a bit of a smile on his face today which was nice for a change and one I'd like to see a little more often from him. He's still learning his craft and a valuable enough asset for Jose to groom and turn into the kind of pro we need. Not at his peak by a long shot and that's encouraging for me.

Electric again. Referee gave little protection and he got clattered late time and time again. Great to see him scoring. He terrifies defences... love it.

Very much true. He looks much better when Rashford is playing CF instead of Ibrahimovic.

He was very good today again. You can see that he had a little bit more confidence as he always looked to go on the front foot when he received the ball, when he's not so confident he oftens just sticks to the left touchline and doesn't look to get as involved.

I've noticed he also ends up on the deck quite a lot. It's often because whoever is marking him looks to press him quickly, going in hard on him and not allowing him too much time on the ball. For me this is a positive as it shows really that the opposition are afraid of what he can do if given too much space.

People forget that last season he was one of the few bright sparks and almost every time he went on the pitch the pressure was all on him and he coped pretty well with it. It's only natural for a young player to find it harder in the second season as opposition teams are usually more aware of what he can do. Add to the fact our style of play is slightly different under Mourinho and it also takes a bit of adapting.

If he can continue the form of the last couple games and continue to improve his consistency he'll be a top player for us for a number of years.

I know he has shown last season he can do this, obviously. It's more that this season he hasn't been playing at the same level, and just because he was decent today doesn't mean he's back. That was all. I'm just not sure he's back at the form we want him at.

I get get feeling some people are forgetting his age still. He was brilliant again today.
