I'd argue the reaosn he hasn't committed is because he see's below par players like Mata playing over him in his position even in dead rubber games so yes it has something to do with Mata

But he's had the opportunity to showcase enough drive and skill and commitment at training. It all starts in training, interacting with your teammates and coaches then conducting yourself off the pitch. Why is it that everyone else is doing this and has gotten some type of exposure and built off of it.

Why do you think that Ole give opportunities to Williams ahead of Young and Shaw? Or Pereira, Chong and Greenwood ahead of Lingard and Mata? Or Garner ahead of Matic?

Sounds to me like he was going to play but had to withdraw cause of injury.

Could be. To me "It’s going to be a great occasion for the lads," sounds a bit like he knew he wouldn't be playing. All in all, a bit of a weird choice of a player for the interview as I'm sure everyone at the club knows what's up.

I’d argue that only Williams and Greenwood have, Williams was more due to a lack of options.

Still think he showed great promise in pre season and for whatever reason will probably be leaving our football club.

He was also used as a LW twice for some reason.

This is only ever mentioned with regards to Gomes. I would think that every single member on here has had a gripe with Solskjaer’s team selections at some point, and most probably find something to complain about every single match day, yet virtually no-one assumes anything has to do with training performance unless they are referring to Gomes barely getting a sniff.

Solskjaer doesn’t fancy him. He’s not interested in giving Gomes a fair crack of the whip. Simples.

He's got his fair crack and failed to perform. There's no sugar coating his performances in the first team, he's offered little to what the Caf thought he would in pre season.

Exactly

I'll freely admit I've liked what I've seen of Gomes prior to this season (and indeed this past pre-season) but in the games he's played since he hasn't performed and maybe that's due to making his mind up this past summer that he wasn't going to stay

No one can accuse Ole of not giving youth a chance if they're deserving of it

No need to aid his development if he's not committing to us. Nothing to see here folks.
Agree with this. I really wanted to him to come good for us, but the commitment to United needs to be there from him. If the coaching staff feel he's not ready and needs to develop his game a bit more then the onus is on him as a young player to go and prove himself in training/reserve games. Imagine the precedent that would be set if we caved in to the "play me more else I won't sign" demands of every kid with talent.

This is the breakdown of Gomes' minutes and employment this season thus far.

EPL - 1 game (9 minutes total) versus West Ham. United was 1-0 down and playing poorly, so, he came into a poorly functioning side that day. He was substituted on for Mata, however, instead of taking AM, the previously substituted Lingard went central and Gomes was reduced to playing wide left for those limited minutes.

Europa League - 3 games

vs. Astana (h) - Played 68 minutes in his natural AM slot alongside Chong and Greenwood.
vs. AZ Alkmaar (a) - Played the full 90 minutes, however, on the left side instead.
vs. Astana (a) - Played 88 minutes, however, on the left side. Side featured Laird, Garner, Levitt, Chong and Greenwood.

If he hasn't impressed in matches, contributing factors to that could be either that he's not playing in his natural performing position, or that he's not playing in first IX's that are anywhere close to being full strength. It's an argument that has to be taken into consideration. Greenwood has done superbly, however, he has had the benefit of playing with practical full strength United IX's. Gomes, on the other hand, has had to try to impress in teams with lesser overall quality.

It'd be disappointing if he leaves, to be honest. He'd end up a team like Dortmund or Leipzig, in AM, and developing playing in a correct position. I have a feeling that down the line, we'll regret not securing his contract.

"He didn't take his chances". I guess we should ship out Tuanzebe and Garner too. But let's have all the patience in the world with the scrubs in the squad!

Might be more to this, could be Ole and the club don't like his attitude. Might be asking more than his performances merit. Only they know.

Looks an awful lot like him demanding minutes/too much money.

There are too many active examples for anyone reasonable not to take the lower deal, prove oneself on loan, renegotiate and be compensated in line a bit further down the road.

I do trust the clubs assessment on youngsters but I also know they are going to make mistakes. Everyone does. I reserve my right to feel that the club is potentially messing this one up, because I trust Gomes ability and that he'll become a great player. Nothing to be outraged about if he leaves, but I'd still like to be proved right if he does.

It's ridiculous to give credit to Angel over Ole. There is something that Ole does not think is right and we are guessing here at the Caf. It could be any of a number of things.

If end of the day Ole thinks Angel is the player we need going forward, the club will give it all to keep him.

Most posts in this thread are highly speculative. It s difficult to make a proper judgement of the situation when no-one has an idea what s going on behind the scenes.

He isn't ill. He isn't injured. Its a conspiracy by Ole to not play him because of the contract issues! \s

One day, one of our players is going to get injured and the negative nellys will not claim it's because they want to leave.

Another one 'ill' I see, with some kind of contractual stuff going on behind the scenes. Quite the sickness bug at United, eh. Hmmmm.

He's gone.

He will strive in a team playing possession-based football at a certain level. His style of play is not suited to a low-possession counter-attacking team like ours. Should let him go in January with some clause of % of a future transfer.

The "illness" or "injuries" on certain players are becoming a bit pathetic. Smells of desperation from the club to say that everything is perfect here.

He may well turn out great, but he simply hasn't performed when given the opportunity, so I don't think he's earnt more playtime. If he wants to go then sure leave.

We are once again left with a few versions.

Some United fans: He’s the second coming of Scholes and Xavi rolled into one. If he’s not playing, it’s because of Woodward’s sinister contract tactics or Solskjær refusing to give youth a chance as usual.

Other United fans: Could be he wasn’t playing because of developmental reasons, tactical dispositions or injury/ilness also, maybe?

Ole: He’s sick and has had an ancle injury.

Flat earthers: As we predicted in 2011, The Ancle Ilness syndrom is solid proof that a player is not playing for due to the Majestic 12 conspiracy, and will be gone (from Earth) soonish.

The usual overreactions and blame games on here.

He hasn't been bad when he's played imo but he certainly hasn't done enough to earn a place in the team either. He has also been unavailable for a few games he might have played in. Ole can't just pander to every kid who won't sign a contract. He's under enough pressure to get results without having to pick weaker players just to keep them happy.

If he had another year on his deal none of this moaning would be happening. He looks like he isn't quite ready yet. Thats fair enough. Hes young and still very slight. Its nobody's fault.

Hopefully he signs, if not it will be his own choice which is also fair enough. He'll do what he feels is best for his development. If he joins a weaker team he'll likely play a lot more.

Pleasing to hear it's a health issue rather than a contractual one, but the fact he still hasn't resigned is still a worry.

I imagine both he and Chong will end up running their contracts down.

Hopefully Gomes signs at least. I like watching him.

I think he will be class eventually, but he needs to improve his stamina. He can't play at a high tempo yet like the mens game which is why he goes missing for big spells.

He will get that eventually but it might take a few years before he grows into it.

What opportunities, he's had four appearances all season.

A lot of people seem to have forgotten that Chong is also getting into the squad despite the fact his contract is also ending in 2020.

Gomes will not excel under Ole because of the ethos of our football, we are a counter attacking team which isn't intuitive to the movement for possession based football. Gomes will definitely thrive under a team that sets out to dominate the ball. He's looked decent in the games he's featured, he either needs a loan or to go elsewhere to develop but under the right club / manager.

I don’t know if they’ve been in the squad a similar number of times, but they’ve had a similar amount of senior minutes this season.

Been mentioned numerous times, but doesn’t fit in with the tinfoil hat brigades agenda...
