We are probably going to have first option on any Jorge Mendes client now with Jose Mourinho as manager, as many have already said.

If we genuinely want him, he'll end up a United player. I can see Mendes, with JM's permission, using United to drum up interest in his clients a lot too though

I hate the idea of Rooney in midfield.

Isn't Herrera exactly the same type of player?
He seems a lot better dribbling/carrying the ball forward. Similar to Herrera in that both look like an awkward mix between a no.8 and a no.10 though.

and has a goal threat.
So does/did(?) Ander in the three man midfield in his first season. 8 goals in 31 matches wasn't bad at all. Most were really cute finishes from late runs into the box too.

I honestly believe Gomes is capable of scoring 10 goals a season and has the ability to score out of nothing to settle a tight game.

Gomes is quicker, better dribbler, better technically and has a goal threat.

Cheers, i don't think i've ever seen him play, my little knowledge of him comes from youtube videos. He would be a good addition if he was a better version of Herrera, although i don't think it's a pritority to upgrade on someone like Herrera when we don't have a proper right winger for example.

Both Mata & Herrera will have to up their game if thinking about surviving in the same team with Gomes... and now with Di Marzio on the case, I think this may actually happen.

I'd be happy if you got him, he's talented but he's got a lot of big flaws still - injuries and inconsistencies...

I think he will be a star here, and I'm fully in favour of his signing. 40m euros is a fair deal, and he can hopefully put the consistency in his game under Mourinho. The ability is there though.

I think Schneiderlin will thrive under Mou, and should be the perfect foil to Gomes. Rooney is a much better midfielder than people give him credit for, and brings the sort of heart, desire and winning mentality that makes a difference. Personally I would still start him in a midfield 3. Frankly, a Rooney/Pogba/Schneiderlin midfield would be the best in the league by some distance; but Gomes would be pretty good too.

One thing I particularly like about him is that he is very good off both feet.

Is this how you're going to spend your summer? Convincing yourself that you'd be happy with everything we do?

We have Herrera and Schneiderlin who could play far better in Jose's system. Why spend >20m on this guy?

Doesnt Mou like 2 b2b 1 holding MF setup ? I could see Hererra and Gomes playing together but if Rooney get that undropable status again, someone has to leave.

Neither Herrera or Gomes enjoy the defensive side of the game. Neither are suited to playing in a midfield where they have responsibilities without the ball.

Herrera definitely works hard defensively, just watch some of the games from last year against Tottenham, Liverpool and City. What he lacks is the physical presence.

Surely we can find someone better if we're looking to strengthen in his position? Maybe someone who doesn't play well only once in five games...

Yeah, i'm not keen on him either.

Hopefully Valencia is just using Manchester United's name to make stingy Juventus pay more.

Gomes and Herrera could play together though.

Very much doubt it.

Herrera has poor defensive awareness for all his hard work which is his big problem. Gomes is perhaps slightly better than this but you really can't have both in the same midfield.

Neither are better let alone far better. I'd say Herrera and Gomes are at the same level right now give or take. But Gomes is younger, has more potential and most importantly his ability to dribble with the ball is a huge plus. The only midfielder we have who can do that is Rooney and he's not even a midfielder or very good at dribbling. Having someone like Gomes gliding with the ball will be a big help in breaking down defenses.
