The issue being finding someone who would want him.
I can see the next manager saddled with a bunch of ten Hags castoffs (Onana, Antony, Mount). Obviously replacements will be brought in, but our squad will be bloated with deadweight due to lack or interest.
We've been here before.
I seem to recall them missing the target with easy chances, rather than any stunning saves.
A couple of decent saves, and a lot of missed chances.

He is having a mare, Onana being dropped for Cameroon seems to have broken him.
Didn’t stop us last summer from splashing 50m on a new GK though. We also had a better keeper last season.

I disagree on the last sentence based on how people wanted us to build from the back, how shit de Gea was and his much he was on. Diogo Costa was the other candidate heavily linked and based on the WC, everyone was completely put off by him. Onana in the other hand, had a great season and was one of the best players on the pitch in the CL final. He's been shit this season, but let's not rewrite history.
Evans was not supposed to be our first choice CB this season. He's been great, but that is not sustainable or likely to continue. He'll need replacing and probably one more CB as well if Varane or Maguire leave.
I don't see who we go for that would be particularly worth selling Onana for at likely considerable loss and spending big money on.
The revisionism regarding De Gea is a bit much, he was quite poor during his last season and still doesn't have a club after rejecting our contract offer. Even though Onana has been a bit hit or miss, he's better than current De Gea.
It’s also well known that he has been a disappointment for his club as well as his national team. Calm, I will remain.

If you do that you better put in an amazing performance. Not "one that just about keeps me from getting dropped". And especially if you've had disciplinary issues in the past.

The amount of criticism DDG is getting on here as some sort of defence of Onana is absolutely beggars belief. The multiple player of the season winner, the golden glove winner last season despite his drop off (saying as the onana fan club like to point out his clean sheets this season), the goalkeeper who took our breath away time and time again with saves you didn't think were possible, who would often make saves that basically won us a game or saved a point. All in defence of this absolute clown we are lumbered with now who has done nothing of note while playing for the club.
Yes he was looking shaky towards the end and even I, as a massive DDG fan from the start, agreed it was the time to move him on. It is possible to believe that it was time for DDG to move on while also thinking Onana is not the right person for the job of replacing him, the two things are not mutually exclusive.
Normally with a goalkeeper you expect some mistakes, none are infallible, but the top goalkeepers generally have a good baseline that helps overlook those. In Onana's time here his baseline has been making a horlicks; in half a season he's put together a comedy highlight reel that would put most keepers career clangers to shame.
I look forward to a time when I dont have to hold my breath literally every time there's a basic shot on goal incase the oaf decides to fall on his arse in the wrong direction or go down in installments for even the tamest of efforts.
He is shite now but he looked really good last year, a whole package. Have other clubs stayed clear of Onana because they knew he's shite, or is it just our bad luck that he turned out like this?

The comparison to DDG is bizarre. DDG joined us as a teenager, at the same age as Onana he was in the PFA team of the year and voted out best player. Only really Neuer was considered better in the world.
Onana should be in his prime now. If he was 19 like DDG when he joined then you naturally know it's going to take time. But he's 27. He will be an outlier if he manages to greatly improve from where he is at now.

I too like to dump on club legends to protect a player that has been here for 5 minutes and been very poor most of the season.

This is spot on. There are some fundamental flaws in his technique he will struggle now to fix. He was available on a free the summer before. On a free looks a smart deal if not a long term fix. Big fee and wages. Terrible deal

People just need to be way more open to different opinions. There are some viewpoints which are ridiculous but it's fine to criticise Onana and/or DDG if it's balanced. There's also no reason to call him an 'oaf' because apparently he's not quite at the level you'd expect from a Untied keeper despite, when you actually look into it, performing well on all GK metrics. If you don't rate him it's fine, but why change the tone of your post with that additon?
For me DDG pre WC18 was amongst the best in the world. He still had limitations and obviously he wasn't going to allow us to play a passing game from the back but his shot stopping ability was arguably the best in the world. Something, at least in my mind, about that WC campaign where he'd become the No1 for his country and he had quite a poor tournament affected his confidence and we never really saw a consistent return to form and more and more errors crept into his game. I agree DDG gets too much flak on here but it's all recency bias because he sated too long, it's a bit like Rooney, had he left a couple of seasons earlier he'd be spoken of in much more glowing terms than he is right now.

They're all outside factors affecting the decision, even if you include some level of performance requirements in there.

Come on now—no way he goes in like that on any other defender making that mistake in a preseason game, especially having just joined the team. That was poor from him.

The answer, at least in the short run, is to not rush Onana back into action. Like any other player who has performed below even his own expectations -- and surely no one here would argue that Onana has performed to his own expectations this season -- he should be given some time off when he returns from AFCON. How much time I don't know, but at least a few games. Every human being goes through tough times. Onana has had a tough time this season, but he really is a decent keeper. Relieve him of the unbelievable stress he's been under sine Day One at Old Trafford and let him come back a new gloved man and perform at the level, hopefully, that he performed at for Inter.
And if Onana is scared shitless that Bayindir will outclass him and permanently take the gloves, feck that. No footballer should be shielded from competition for a starting place in the squad.
