Alexis Sanchez | Staying at Arsenal after City deal falls apart

It's basically the Rooney situation we had. Talk of wanting more money and concerned that his current club can't compete or won't compete. Yet Alexis is hailed as a winner that wants better whilst Rooney was ripped to shreds. Yet Rooney didn't act like a petulant child on the pitch.

I might be remembering incorrectly, but I seem to recall Eto'o playing wide with Milito being the CF at Inter.

And you would be correct....but.

Probably Jose's biggest achievement in terms of difficulty was winning the CL with Porto. He played two strikers up top Derlei and Carlos Alberto, both short (175 or 5' 9"). They were both very mobile.

This was the formation in the final.

It's a system that can work if you have fast intelligent strikers with loads of movement. Sanchez would fit that bill as would Griezmann.

Who would be our Deco and Costinha in this setup?

Agree completely. Also people forget Griezmann was in a high profile tournament with France last year, being their talisman and helping them to the final. Unfortunately for Sanchez, Chile is no France.

I think Sanchez has better individual quality actually, though Griezmann seems to be the better team player.

Copa America:)

The closest thing we have to Costinha is Carrick though it's an accepted view that we'll me in the market for a DM/CM to replace him.

As for Deco, I believe Mkhi has what it takes to provide the playmaking from there. Especially with some help from Pogba at LCM who is better than anything Porto had in that CM creativity-wise (but lacks discipline).

It could work if we were to get a Griezmann/Sanchez type of player. It could also bring the best out of Martial and Rashford, who are not suited to playing solo up top and simultaneously are a bit wasted on the wing.

Second half of the season. First half he played with 2 strikers up top and a midfield diamond behind them

We were competing for trophies back then though. On the last 4 years before Rooney asked to leave because had doubts about the quality of the squad, we had won 3 league titles and missed one for a single point. In fact, on the season when Rooney asked to leave because we weren't competing (and he was absolutely shit for half of the season) we won the league and reached the final of UCL.

Arsenal haven't competed for a big trophy (league or UCL) since 2007 or so. A very big difference.

In addition, Sanchez is playing better than Rooney did that season before he signed the contract. In fact, Sanchez is playing the best football of his career.

Was that a wave goodbye? Can't blame him for doing what it takes to get his move.

Well, at least he's still at the stadium, unlike 90% of Arsenal fans
But yeah, he's gone.

Paris calling, surely. Time to win things.

Rooney was talking to City though. That's why he was ripped to shreds.

Was he? All I can remember was the likes of DM and Mirror reporting that he told "sources" that he is open to offers even from City or something extremely vague like that. I don't want to derail the thread, just asking if this is actually a fact or just something that people have repeated long enough.

I'm pretty sure it's a common knowledge he was talking to City.

Rooney was in the middle of a fecking appalling run of form, he didn't score a goal from open play from March 2010 to January 2011, and had to be sent off to a fat farm during the season because he was unfit. That didn't help matters.

He was also a player who at that point had done more for his team than Sanchez could ever hope to do for Arsenal.

Attitudes like that are why he was able to sign a huge contract in 2014 when it was clear he was on the decline.

But anyway, that's for another thread.

Sanchez is absolutely off in the Summer. Juve or Bayern I reckon he'll end up at.

Was he laughing? I'm sure he was pissing himself when they scored the 5th....I hate Arsenal but that's a fecking disgrace tbh.

@giorno thinks Mustafi is better than Luiz & Sanchez is better than Hazard.
i don't think mustafi is better than david luiz, i think there's not much between the two. Yes, i think alexis is better than hazard. Not much difference there either though

He's a low IQ footballer.
Average, not low. He's still more of a game winner than hazard. Hazard's probably more talented, and his 2014/15 season was better than any of alexis. He's also younger, so he could still become better. But, yeah, not much difference between them

Has such a punchable face, that's all really.

7 years later he is still unfit, not scoring goals and collecting 300k a week. What an Agent he has!!

He was laughing his ass off at 5-1 until he caught himself on the camera then he tried quite hard to change his expression.

Funniest moment of the match. I hope none of our players pull that kind of antics.

Is it feasible that we sign both Sanchez and Griezmann in the same transfer window? That would take us up two notches.

100%. add to that, when we did have world class players (Ronaldo, Tevez), it meant Rooney played out of position and wasn't the main man. When we made him the main man, he complained we don't have enough quality. Then we sign Van Persie and he complains because his position got moved again.
He wanted to retain his cake AND eat it. "sign world class players but not in my position buddy or ones that could take my role as talisman."

Absolutely : funny to us, but Arsenal fans must be fuming.

Tried his hardest to change his expression for the camera, then started smiling again behind his hand.

Express linking us to him. I wish it was another paper. :(
It would be negligent of we don't at least try.

Looking back Rooney was 100% correct with his concerns

Despite being successful for years before and a few seasons after those concerns. We've been less successful since our policy changed and we started spending a feck tonne on star players.
