Alex Song

People say that about most players transferring to the really top clubs. I'm sure they all arrive there believing that they can force their way into the best XI. They need that self-belief to be the players they are.

yep. 95% of us have no idea how much self-belief is required at that level so it is tough for us to even comprehend the thought process.

Besides, Song could easily play in defence for a team like Barcelona. He's young enough to work on his defensive abilities and positioning and Barca could do with a ball-playing defender like him.

Almost there! Arsenal and United open official talks over van Persie

Van Persie is set to be a United player within days
Robin van Persie is closing in on a sensational £20million-plus move after Arsenal officially began negotiations with Manchester United.

The Mirror can reveal the two clubs spent Tuesday night talking about a deal which could now be pushed through before the Premier League kick-off this weekend.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is likely to settle on a fee of just above £20m as United prepare to increase their offer for the Dutch forward, who is currently on international duty but won't be in the starting line-up when Holland play Belgium on Wednesday night.

It is understood the clubs are very close to agreement on a fee.

Shaking on it? Wenger will sell RvP to Fergie rather than lose him on a free
Arsenal would rather sell now than lose van Persie, who has already said publicly he will not extend a contract that is into its final year, on a free transfer next summer.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has already had a £15m bid turned down, and has reservations about paying a bigger fee for a 29-year-old who has one year left on his contract and a chequered injury record.

But United are now prepared to go higher to get their man as they set about taking the Premier League title back from neighbours Manchester City.

Fergie made direct contact with Wenger earlier in the week to try to push the deal through after weeks of posturing.

The clubs are likely to find a middle ground which means it is highly possible van Persie will be on the move and will therefore not be involved in Arsenal’s opening game against Sunderland.

Van Persie has made it clear that United is his preferred destination, ahead of Manchester City and Juventus, and that has prompted Arsenal to sell now.

Wenger is also understood to be ready to cash in on Alex Song, who is a target for Barcelona.

Arsenal will then look to bring in Real Madrid’s Turkish midfielder Nuri Sahin on a one-year loan.

Liverpool are also keen and are prepared to pay a higher proportion of his £80,000-a-week wages, but the player would prefer to go to the Gunners.

Wenger will be without Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for Saturday’s Sunderland game through injury.

Gunners winger Theo Walcott also pulled out of the England squad with a thigh problem on Tuesday, but is hopeful of being fit for the weekend.

Van Persie I can understand given his contract situation but if that article is to be believed, why are they considering selling Song, never mind at the low fees being mentioned?

Cross usually knows what's going on, doesn't he? Or is this all agent-led contract negotiation?

Cross is occasionally ITK, often not.

Basically, Song has 3 years to go, he's a top player, and if we are to lose RVP, there's no way we're letting him go too, especially not for £15m. It would take a massive bid for us even to consider it, and probably Song himself to insinuate he'd like to go.

There was talk somewhere that he had already agreed terms with Barca a couple of weeks ago. Can't think where I saw it. Sounds like Barca though, chat to the player know he wants to come and then low ball and wait for the player to cry for a few months then sign em up for peanuts.

What age is song now anyway? Surely they'd be wanting at least 25 to 30 mil for him he's a tidy fecker. Breaks up play well is good on the ball and as we saw last season put in some cracking balls for RVP

30 million for Song? You're probably talking in pounds as well. What's wrong with you?

Age wise and with the overinflated as feck market that we have nowadays think joe Allen and fletcher. FFS were supposedly buying a 29 yr old with a poor injury record in the last year of his contract for 20 odd million blips. feck player of the year etc it's a rip off and everyone knows it.

30 million for Song? You're probably talking in pounds as well. What's wrong with you?

Wolves have apparently rejected a new bid of over £12m for Fletcher. Kind of puts todays transfer market into perspective. Also, see Henderson, Allen, etc - Song is a far superior player to either of those.

€15m is a joke, in fairness. Disrespectful even.

It's supposed to be an initial bid. The actual targeted fee should be around € 18 - € 20 million.

Mascherano: € 22 million
Khedira: € 14 million
Özil: € 18 million
Reus: € 17 million
Sahin: € 10 million
Kagawa: € 16 million
Cazorla: around € 20 million

Please explain why Song doesn't belong in the same price bracket as these midfielders.

All of those players wanted to leave their respected clubs at that time didn't they? So it's no surprise they'd have been a bit lower.

Not followed this so no idea if Song wants to leave or not but if he doesn't then it's no surprise that they would hold out for £25 million +

"We were together on vacation. He [Song] would like to go to Barcelona, any player would like to. Barcelona are not one of the best in the world, but the best," Kameni told Cope Catalunya.

"[Song would] fit in at Barcelona," he continued. "He has all the features to play there. We all know what kind of player Barcelona like and he is one of them."

"He is like Yaya Toure, but with much more mobility. He is very mobile but can also pass well. He is a complete player."

"He is a hard worker and is very versatile, which makes him a very good team player."

His Cameroon teammate.

Ironically as you're chasing RVP, Song is actually the player who would improve you the most.

I've been thinking that for as long as the speculation about RVP has been going on, he's developed into an excellent player over the last two or three years.

Yea definitely. Cost difference wouldn't be big either. Difference is RvP has said he wanted to leave where as Song hasn't.

RAC1 is quite trustworthy normally, so I'll leave this here ...

According to Catalan radio station RAC1, FC Barcelona sports vice president Josep Maria Bartomeu was in London on Tuesday, negotiating the signing of Arsenal midfielder and Cameroon international Alex Song (24), an operation that could be closed in the coming hours.

Bartomeu, who traveled with the club’s director of football Raul Sanllehí, was in constant contact with Sandro Rosell during the negotiations for the transfer, and a deal could be closed at around €16 million. The Catalan club offers about €15 million for the player, while the London club asks for €18 million. None of the two Barca players that have previously been considered as potential bargaining chips, Ibrahim Afellay or Cristian Tello, would be involved in the operation, according to latest reports.

The club and the player have already agreed a five-year contract, and the player will earn gross wages of nearly €5 million annually.

They sell Song to you on the cheap, and haggle over a million for Van Persie with us. Arsenal's policy makes no sense at all. Sell all their good players, buy some more, rinse and repeat. They will never compete if they keep selling.

Well. Here are my thoughts.

Song is much much much easier to replace than van Persie. For € 18 million Wenger can buy M'Vila or Capoue (I don't know why Barcelona isn't going for Capoue tbh, but maybe it's funnier WUMing Arsenal). He also seems to be interested in Sahin. With Wilshere coming back, with the purchase of Cazorla (record signing) and with Arteta being one of their best players last season, I don't think Wenger himself sees Song as a necessity in midfield. For all the good dribbles and assists Song produced last season, he did leave a lot to be desired positionally. I don't think he's an out-and-out defensive midfielder. As a midfield allrounder and squad player like Keita he might do a good job however. Whereas Arsenal might be better of getting a proper defensive midfielder.

As for van Persie. Well. You are league rivals and you don't like each other if I'm not mistaken. At least the Arsenal Mania guys are raging about a possible RvP move to United. So I can understand why Wenger is refusing to even talk with you guys about van Persie. :D

It's supposed to be an initial bid. The actual targeted fee should be around € 18 - € 20 million.

Mascherano: € 22 million Market's moved on since he left, and he was 26 and has the highest fee out of all of the following players anyways.
Khedira: € 14 million 1 year left on contract when sold
Özil: € 18 million Rejected contract extension with just 1 year left on contract. His dad said pretty much that he would go to Real anyways. Not bad price for either club for a youngster with 1 year left, despite his quality
Reus: € 17 million Buyout fee was 18 million euros. Bought for 17.5m. Clubs fault for such a low buyout fee.
Sahin: € 10 million Criminally underpriced, as he had a 10 million buyout fee for non-German clubs.
Kagawa: € 16 million 13-17 million quid, and he wanted us and they'd lose him on a free if they didn't sell
Cazorla: around € 20 million Malaga are financially fecked, they're selling everyone and can't get as high as they could've because their owners are withdrawing out of the 'project.'

Please explain why Song doesn't belong in the same price bracket as these midfielders.

2/7 players had their buyout clauses reached (well, to within 500k euros anyways) so I don't see how having a buyout clause lower than your 'market' value means that they ought to be valued that little. Several clubs would've (and probably did) meet their buyout clauses and I'm sure they would've been sold for more had they not had a buyout clause / one of say 100 million.

3 out of the remaining 5 had just 1 year left on their contract and had refused contract extensions, and thus would have a far reduced market value relating to Song, who has 2 years left.

1 out of the remaining 2 have a club which needed to sell him this window because they are financially fecked; even a relegated club wouldn't sell with this much impunity (Malaga)!

Only Mascherano you can relate to Song; and the market's moved on since then (as well as club revenues, TV deals etc). Anyways, 22 million euros isn't far from what people are valuing Song at; which is around 30-33 million euros.

I don't see how RvP can be had for 18-25 million quid, (depending on where he's going) and Song for just 12-15 million quid.

Arsenal are a club that don't 'need' to sell Song this year, they can offer CL football, they've been his club since 17 (on loan, and 18 permanently), giving him good wages at the moment probably, and are still a big club. Conversely, selling him this year would mean they can get a higher fee, and please the player if he wants to go; but to my knowledge he hasn't refused any contract extension at present; all those players you listed didn't want to extend their contract with their club at the time, and most had just 1 year left or had their buyout clauses met.

Song doesn't have a buyout clause (or a low one, anyways), and Arsenal can still convince him, and have at least the next 6 months to convince him to do so whilst still getting a big fee from him.

15 million is criminally undervaluing him for todays market; even 15 million quid is rather on the low side. I think him and Sahin for anything under 20 million quid is an invitation for us to pick up 2 very good players. I know I'd rather get Song (or Sahin) than RvP for 20 million quid. Heck, get both Song and RvP with the '40 million net spend' we're allowed, and sell Berbatov who wouldn't get a look in at all next season.

Are they really selling Song? That too with barely any fuss?

He's one of their best players. Its 2 steps forward 10 steps back for Arsenal this summer if they sell Song and Van Persie.
