Special talent, but this graph shows the reason he won't be starting on Sunday. He needs to become a lot better at reading the game and protecting his full back, instead of switching off until we get the ball and go on the attack. There's no way in my book that ETH entrusts him with defending against Trent in the opening stages of the game.

No worries though, it's only early in his career. He will get there if he keeps his head and works hard.
Totally agree and he has Antony to learn from.

For the sake of the argument, Ten Hag could also throw Garnacho on Trent to pin TAA back, knowing our boy can burst in space. I still think we will see Rashford on the left but it is an option.

Weghorst had a good game against West Ham, linking play really well, so I think he will start again, with Garnacho on the bench.

I think he is very special. People keep saying he is raw. I actually don't feel he is that raw. In fact I think for an 18 y/o winger he is not that raw. He plays with his head up I feel.

His biggest strength imo is he keeps coming back for more. That is an invaluable asset. Forgetting what happened before and the confidence to feel he will beat his defender even after losing a few one on ones.

Yeah agree I don't think he's all that raw either in terms of decision making etc.

I'm not saying he's mentally fully matured in his game already but really it's his body strength that gives his age away.

He's on the floor a lot. Soon as he gets a bit of man strength he'll look very complete.

WTF is "raw" anyway? Every promising 18YO footballer is nowhere near being the final product. Whatever "raw" means, when they were 18YO Rooney, Ronaldo and Messi were several years away from their peak. And players who peak at 18YO are not the kind of players we want to bring in or hold onto anyway.

Think if he had come on at 1-0 we would have seen him maybe get into the game.

What actually happened there? Initially thought it was just a normal sort of challenge but he looked in pain right after. Should have immediately been taken off for Fred really. Can’t afford to go down with just nine men with him being a passenger

I guess follow throughs don't count in the penalty area eh?

Shame he had to come off, really think we had a chance for a winner with him and pellestri on

Scissor tackles are famously safe and never cause injuries. KWP with 2 in the box today :wenger:

Its strange how the law is applied when it comes to "he got the ball"

Go through the back of someone and its a foul, go 2 footed but barely touch the player its a red...but completely clatter into the player using the scissor kick motion and its totally fine :wenger:

Looks like Walker-Peters has cost him his place in the latest Argentina squad. What is it with talentless Southampton players and injuring our youth players? First Romeu on Greenwood now Walker-Peters on Garnacho. Be glad when they go down, far too violent to remain in the league.

Sad for the guy, he's had a fantastic season so far. Hopefully he might be back for the fixtures in late April/early May.

Hopefully its not too bad and he's back soon after the international break

Fecks sake.

Laughable that both Carroll and Walker-Pieters got away with their tackles on Eriksen+Garnacho.

Real shitter for him.

But I don’t think the tackle was anywhere near as bad as Carroll. Was more unfortunate momentum of legs.

Where as Carroll just threw his crotch at Eriksen.

Another 8 weeks.

I remember when this happened to me as a youngster. The adrenaline had me walking home jumping and all sorts. I was out for about 2 months.

Ankles are a b*t*ch to heel.

Fecking Walker-Peters. Talentless prick, just like that twat Carroll who purposefully injured Eriksen. It’s always the cloggers.

Hope he picks himself up and dusts himself down from the disappointment of missing the international games.

It looks quite innocuous at a first glance but the follow-through ensures that Garnacho’s ankle gets caught under the body weight of the tackling player with nowhere to go to mitigate the impact or relieve pressure on the ankle.

Ten Hag was hopeful yesterday the injury wasn't too bad. Will be a big blow for the lad and the team if he's out for extended period.

It was about as unfortunate as Casemiro's foot bouncing of the ball. They both went in recklessly with too much power, resulting in a dangerous situation. Even if both got the ball, they did so by risking injury to the other player. Casemiro gets a red card even when getting the ball, but because the scissor kick is in the box you don't even get a yellow card for that or a foul for that matter. But sometimes it's weird. A goalkeeper is allowed to punch a player in the face as hard as he can if he intend to not miss the ball.

Too be fair KWP isn't a malicious individual even on his Instagram he noted an apology to Garnacho and highlighted the ridiculous abuse he received.

The issue is however the scissors motion for any tackle should be an automatic red card irrespective of the level of impact. It almost invariably results in injury because the lead foot goes in one direction and the trailing foot stops the momentum causing the players foot to lock and wallah ankle injury.

The club should be more outspoken regarding this, that's two players lost to essentially the same scenario. The refereeing has once again been a disgrace and barely a few months in between the season we witnessed some very good officiating at the world cup. Will never understand why the refs are so protected from criticism. I understand them being shielded from abuse but any professional field position should be able to be answerable to criticism.
