I dont think Hazard is better than Young. I fear the guy may turn into Quaresma eventually.

If we sign Young we know what we get. He is quite consistent and would add some spark and creativity to our side.

Nevertheless Id rather have Guardado than Young and Hazard

Hazard is 5 years younger and considered one of the brightest talents.

We are a top team with a brilliant squad, so imho, we should only go for players who would really improve us and are considered the best in their position. Not sure if Young is that

Ronaldo's absence plays a part but our set-piece delivery has been dire, so anything that improved this is a big plus.

Goals scored from set-pieces (Premier League) 2010/11

1 Newcastle 20
2 Chelsea 18
3 Blackburn 18
4 Stoke 18
5 Blackpool 17
6 Fulham 17
7 Birmingham 16
8 Wolverhampton 15
9 Bolton 14
10 Manchester United 13
11 Manchester City 13
12 Everton 13
13 Tottenham 12
14 West Ham 12
15 Liverpool 11
16 West Bromwich 11
17 Arsenal 9
18 Aston Villa 9
19 Wigan 9
20 Sunderland 8

Considering how many set-pieces we get in the final 3rd, them stats would indicate that Pogue has a point, Bryan.

Uh. But Ashley Young?!

Who do we have that is better?

I didn't say we had someone who's better. I meant that the players we have (Rooney, Nani) are equally mediocre striking a ball from free kicks hence no improvement in that area. Hope I'm wrong, but certainly Young doesn't strike me as a Beckham/Juninho type free kick specialist.

Well it depends, really. He'll be a good addition to give our two best wingers competition and provide good delivery from set pieces. So not spending too much and getting that with him also being premiership proven is a good bit of business that will improve the squad (probably not the first 11). But spending a huge sum on him seems rather pointless because he's not worth huge sums.

He's decent, but he turns 26 next month; i'm not really sure 16 mil is worth it. Of course, he's English, and proven, and that's why we're paying a premium to get him.

But then, any day a Young rather than a Bebe. At least this lad can cross.

The problem we face is Valencia - Nani...

Both still at their peaks... Both look great and has already adapted to our style... We also have Park who is a big game player and will always provide us cover and will be used in certain tactics...

Looking back on how we got Nani in... I think right now we should be going for a prospect winger like most people claim, we got Nani for 18m back then, a player with good potential, and still relatively young... and will accept that he will take time to adapt but also with the possibility to do a Hernandez.

I will only gor for A.Young if we didn't recall Cleverly back, if we sold Obertan too and as Bebe' is on loan, AND if A.Young was willing to be a squad player and will not demand game time like what most 25-26 yr olds would do...

As much as we are linked with him and as good as A.Young is, I still think that he won't sign for us considering he wouldn't be garunteed a starting position week in week out...

He'll get that at the scum... Which is why the hype is probably used to strengthen his valuation as his contract will expire soon.

The deal's already done, it'a not a question if, it's a question when he is going to put the pen to paper.

Everyone in the United squad is a squad player. We've already signed Ashley Young, man, you need to come to terms with that.

Ashley Young is a lot better than Rooney and Nani at taking set-pieces. He will definitely improve us in that area.

No great surprise Aston Villa scored relatively few goals from set-pieces. They scored relatively few goals, full stop. Almost 30 goals fewer than United did. They had a poor season, finishing 13th.

Brwned posted some stats (in funky graphs) earlier on which showed that Villa's goal scored per free-kick taken was considerably better than ours.

They finished 9th, scoring a similar amount to teams outside the top 6 (Everton, WBA, Fulham etc).

Young is not an incredible set peice taker, just a good one.

I thought they finished 13th? Oh well.

When did anyone describe Young as "incredible" at anything? He's better than what we've got, though. Which was my point.

Certainly hope so, we could do with someone who can actually score a goal directly from a free kick.

The same Guardado with 2 goals and 0 assists last year?

I think Young could play the Park role - both are slightly built but tenacious both have great engines though Park probably is the better here but Young is better on the ball.

Both can play out wide or part of a three man midfield or off the front man - bit actually have a good football brain.

Still don't understand what all the fuss is about.

SAF has very rarely let us down when he spends serious money, so why are people querying it?

The thought of rotating Young, Nani, Valencia and Park is great in my mind. However starts knows they will get subbed if they don't play well. Should increase performances and focus the mind of some (Nani) next season.

Don't know about Young in that respect but if he has the football intelligence of Park coupled with his speed and eye for a goal then we'll be getting a player of the highest standard

Does he always have to be the whipping boy in any debate?

I'd play Nani regardless and one out of two from Valencia and Young

It's always a good thing that Young can play left side

As for him through the middle, forget it

Don't rule it out.One of the reasons he will be signed is his ability to come into the middle...that versatility is probabaly what's caught SAFs eye.

Maybe so, but if you've Berbatov and Rooney to play there and Hernandez more or less certain to start as well, you're not going to drop them for the sake of Ashley Young

More likely he'll be encouraged to come off the wing a la Ryan Giggs, with Valencia/Nani keeping the width on the opposite side

The best thing about this signing is that there's goals in Young
