A serious look at Mauricio Pochettino

I think Levy is very reluctant to sack him so it's likely he will remain in post for a while yet though I think Christmas will be key. If we show no improvement by then I think Levy will have no choice but to sack him.

Yea I agree with you. Who do you think you would go for to replace him, if it comes to that?

I don't know but I know what I'd want - naming no names but I think we really need an experienced manager who has a track record of winning things. I do not want another young and upcoming manager - I want an experienced hand because that I think is what we really need right now - a guy who can come in and command respect immediately.

Good points man, and agreed. I also think it will be very interesting to see where Poch goes after Spurs, I think he may make a move people aren't expecting. Not saying he will be at Arsenal or anything daft like that, just meaning I'm not sure he will pick United or Barca. Possibly another club where he can do what he has done with Spurs, and be allowed to build a side.

But thats literally the managers job, motivating players. Also Tottenham just reached a Champions League final, ruling them out as a trophy winners is nonsense, atleast for the players responsible for bringing them there, should you not build on such a success? All the players from last seasons Champions League run team (-Trippier) are still Tottenham players, and that was a team that at the start of the year still was in the running for the league title, if the players dont believe they can win anything with Tottenham, that is on the manager.

Reaching Champions League final is totally different to winning it, even Spurs fan here mentioned that they have been absolutely dog shit since January. They are nowhere near to even have a chance winning the league over the likes of Liverpool & City, the players know it.

Everything what you said is nothing but fantasy. Realistically, manager can't motivate players who don't wanna be in the club and don't believe with the project. Players are grown men, they don't just be convinced by talk like a kid, they want proof & action not talk. If you are trying to convince me that you can fly, I won't believe you. If someone told me that Watford could finish in top 4 this season after reached FA Cup final last season, I am not convinced.

I absolutely hate Mourinho & I never wanted his short term winning approaches to cover gaps at United's need for a Post SAF rebuild.

However - if anything Spurs or Arsenal need, it has to be Mourinho.

Neither of these London clubs needs beautiful football for the next 2-3 years (he will only last that long) & he will break down that barrier of winning things for clubs that haven't won things for a long time.

I also think that he will do very well with an ageing squad too & get the last bit of worth of your older players before you say good bye to them for good.

When you think of what he’s done for that club...

He took them to a champions league final 6 months ago. Tottenham ffs.

A hasty decision, in my opinion, as he could easily have turned things around given a little more time. He deserved a chance to do just that after spending over 5 years at the club and converting it into a genuine top-four outfit.

Levy and Spurs may come to regret this.

Leicester did the same thing with Ranieri and it turned out to be correct. Might be something going on behind the scene which is irreparable.

They've lost so many games this last year it's unreal. If the two half seasons were put together they'd be well down from even where they are now.
The cup masked their massive problems.

It's time. Even Tottenham fans on here were calling it.

Maybe, who knows? I just can’t see how they think they can improve on him. Especially since they never spend anything.

The real question may have been not about the ability, but his willingness to do so.

What a fecking stupid decision by Spurs. We should be all over this. He's a much better manager than Ole. There's 0% chance it's not gonna end in tears with Ole in charge.

Poch for free is certainly worth a punt. Worst case scenario, he doesn't work out. We go back on the manager merry-go-round until we find a good 'un. It's worked for other teams like City, Chelsea, Liverpool and (formerly) Spurs.

Yeah, maybe, but I think he earned the opportunity to turn it around, at least the remainder of the season.

Not sure I agree with this. Craig Shakespeare managed to secure a 14th place end to the season. Fine that Leicester were struggling, but somehow I feel they would have avoided relegation regardless. Claude Puel returned Leicester to a middle-pack team.

It's easy to say they were correct NOW in hindsight after they are having a good start to the season. But nevertheless. Rainieri deserves a statue of himself outside of King Power Stadium for guiding the team to the biggest league title upset in modern football.

Wow, we should really be lining him up for next season if Ole doesn't turn things around.

I think it was simply a case of the squad losing motivation after achieving all they could (which wasn't much really but they've definitely hit their peak) under him. Every manager (except maybe bar Fergie) struggles with this and the solution if you're Pep / Jose is to leave the club when you realize your time there is done. Pep even talks about meeting Fergie and talking to him to try understand what keeps the desire to win alive within a group of players that won everything there is.

Ultimately, his tactics are still modern and work well in the PL. They play an entertaining brand of football. Maybe doesn't quite have the killer touch to win trophies, but will stabilize the club so it's consistently in the top-four and in CL knockout rounds which is more than what can be said for our current set of coaches.

And so it begins. Tottenham get rid of a SuperMegaSaviourOfTheWorld manager. Suddenly they are Ole-out threads/post popping up.

People still want a manager who hasn't won anything and got sacked by 2 of his 3 clubs in professional football as a manager.

This is a tough one for his fans. They'd want us to lose as much as possible so Poch can get in asap.

Which other club sacked him?

Harry Redknapp on SSN just then basically said Poch thought he had the United job last year and did speak to the club

I have never understood why people think we could get Levy to agree to let Poch go for only £40 million. That seems incredibly unlikely to me, and yesterday I heard a rumor that, if true, confirms my suspicions.

I watched yesterday's game with a friend who is a well-connected Spurs fan, sufficiently so that last week he got a tour of the new stadium (which he raves about incidentally. It's a big pitch but with very little setback to the stands and with steep banking - he thinks the atmospherics are going to be great).

His inside info from a club employee - and give this as much or as little credibility as you wish - is that Levy's opening ask for Poch is £140 million. The rationalization is that Man Utd would need not only to buy out the contracts of Poch but also all his assistants, and then also pay Tottenham for the inconvenience and risk they would have to take on if they agreed to the deal. Plus, of course, he know there aren't many alternatives out there so he has Utd over a barrel unless they take a punt on Ole or Zidane.

From a business perspective that seems like the right approach and absolutely one that Levy would take.

The corollary is that Woodward would be insane to pay that, but what if they negotiated it down to $75 million? Would Poch's supporters still think that was worthwhile? Maybe so, for true believers. I mean, if we had paid £5 million for Fergie back in 1986 would that have been too much in retrospect?

This aged well

Really don't understand the fixation with Poch he's reach two finals and lost both of them, people say he's a good coach but he's had fives years at tot and what has he actually achieved?

Who has he coached to a good level? Keane well he's a striker and his positioning is a natural instinct, Son maybe? Who else? Ali? Rose? I really don't get it... I've watched them a couple of times and frankly they look lost.

Sometimes he comes across like a right bellend.

How do you not recognize what Poch has done at Spurs? Spurs were bang average before him. He turned them into regular top 4 contenders and while the trophy cabinet is empty, he did have a few deep cup runs including the CL final despite 0 signings in the summer of 2018.

He’s a fraud and will be found out massively at his next club.
